Title: jammer event
Post by: Nico on March 06, 2003, 04:50:32 pm
sorry if that already exists, but I was wondering, if it doesn't:
would it be possible to have a jamming event? it would do two things: first it jams sensors like in stormy nebulas ( that already exists I suppose ), but it would also make all guided missiles in the mission dumbfires ( no target lock of any sort ). would be kindda useful to me...

Do you mean fire them as dumbfires?  That may go against what the missile was designed to do.  Or do you just mean that the player can't acquire lock?

Perhaps a twist on this would be to make an "emp-effect" sexp.

I knew there was something I really wanted! I've been waiting over a year and a half for that event but I've never remembered when I`ve been on HLP.

there's the EMP missle -- maybe something could be hacked out of that code.

An easier way would be to use the nebula EMP code, just without the nebula. Use the sexp to simulate a lightning bolt.

Or just simply jam communications. ("T£ey#re &@m"i$g us Sir!") It could prevent orders for wingmen, perhaps, calling for support and getting orders from command... I'd imagine missiles and bombs are shielded enough to keep their lock (and aquiring is done by ship computer anyway) that it requires something more powerful, like the EMP pulse from the missile or nebula interference to affect them. Continuous full EMP effect might get too close to being "unfair", thus not fun - or maybe not. :)

Unfair? The AI has just as much trouble with EMP blasts as the player. You ever played that one recovery mission? The Shivan fighters can't tell which way's up half the time, and I don't think they actually managed to HIT me once...

True... And of course I have, Where Lightning Falls is a classic and one of everyone's favourites. (Good thing I put that 'maybe not' and the smiley there...)

Goober: dumbfires, so even the rockeyes can't aquire a target (actually, what would be better if that they keep switching targets, that'd make them go in every direction until they die when their lifespan has expired, but I guess that's too much to do, so I didn't suggest it in the frst place ).

nah. I want missiles to be disrupted. If you think it's too unfair, try to avoid fighters and kill the source of the jamming.

jamming orders/preventing reinforcement can be done w/ any new sexp.

Right now I have no idea where I got the word "unfair"... Might be quite fun actually.

Yes, I was just thinking about mission elements, not sexps themselves... Meaning, this new one could be used in a mission in conjunction with existing sexps to accomplish what I said.

well, that was the plan anyway :D full jamming of everything that can/could/might be jammed :)
