The title says it all, I want to upgrade to XP Pro (Home won't really do), however I don't want to spend much doing it. I do however want a legit copy of the software - before anyone goes down that road. And I also understand that what I want might just not be possible - but where is the cheapest you've seen XP Pro?
Cheers guys :)
-
www.ebay.com
Bout all you'll find that's not the same price, every software dealer I know keeps Windows (98, XP, 2k whatever) at the price set by MS. Hell 98 is still like $100 for the upgrade version.
-
Psst, if you can't find it cheap enough, contact me
... and
.... i'll get you a copy :D

dude, XP, u need to have an original no matter what. when you go to activate it, u have to call microsoft to do it, using the serial number given. if u do that its going to conflict with the copy of XP whoever gave it to you. the serial is going to be the same as the copy and they wont activate it for you. u better off getting a hot version/copy, then using the cracks provided by it.
or spend the money to get it.
unfortuantly microsoft made sure XP and up isnt easy to double by friend2friend means.

I don't think he was talking about a legit copy here.
-
deep eyes: The beta copy of XP was available months before the market version was released, and has none of that security silliness. Later versions have bypassed the security system completely, and a Google search will yield a few dozen different versions.
-
I do mean legit - that is to say legal. The reason? I don't want to **** around with getting out of a tight spot if things go awry - that is to say I have system problems. If it's really safe to copy the CD and make sure I can activate it then please PM me and we'll discuss it away from the forums (I may not like warez here in public, but since there's more confidentiallity to PMs/email... thats another matter).

Windows XP Pro Corporate Edition is the only way to go (if you're dead-set on submitting yourself to XP). No activation. Nein. Nada. Nyet.

The University store that I work in sells a Student License for about $130 (Cdn) for WinXP Pro. Its just the CD and a number but hey thats good enough. If your a student, you probably can find it available...I would think.
-
Just out of curiosity, what is it in XP Pro you want that isn't in XP Home?
-
I was refering to the one Kaliereth (Thunder easier to spell....meh...) wants. But Zylons right. and yes my copy is before the market version.

funny thing is, HOME is Proffesional, with alot of features disabled, which there are ways to enable but its coded more around a lossy ME style codebase (someone told me).
-
Why XP? 2k can perform multiple times faster than XP.... want me to give statistics? (oh, cheaper by a few ten too)
www.pcworld.com
Anyway here's a site that sells it for 150 or so

I think it has more networking features or something

Well I thought it must be something like that, more secure or something, but I have friends with both and I honestly can't tell the difference (except the loading bar at startup on one is green and on the other is blue).
-
I'd just be more comfortable with the pro edition, I want those extra features and from what I gather it's automatically configured to not have an opinion on everything you do (unlike home which tries to "help" the user).
So, the XP Pro Corporate software... where and how much? If indeed there's no activation at all I'm guessing it can be copied easily enough but as I've said before - keep that in a private place.

Oh, less wizards?
-
Exactly, I like 98s control over the majority of what goes on - even if I have to spend time looking up what option to pick to make sure it's the right one, I have a better idea of what I want out of my software than Windows XP Home might think - and I've seen it make poor choices that took time to repair on a friends computer that - had he had access to the options - could've been avoided.
-
*pities Kalfireth*
XP Home clean install running on a Celeron (2nd gen, not the lousy 1st gen) 500Mhz / 128mb RAM = laggy OS. Yes, regular explorer windows were actually laggy.
2000 Pro running on PII-200Mhz (laptop, I might add) / 96mb RAM = smooth as silk.
Honestly, dual-booting 2k (work stability) and 98/98SE (games & performance) is, IMHO, far better than XP. That's what I do.

Same here. Works great ! :)
-
You all seem to be forgetting two things:
1. This guy is called Thunder
2. XP is just another way for Bill G. to squeeze more money out of the suckers who buy it. I will stick with 98 until it falls apart around me, and then switch to Linux!

Or triple booting with 2k/98se/debian ;7

MICROSOFT = ****.
(By the way, XP Home and Pro are identical apart from the loading bar colour, and some dumbass security crap to do with business users i.e. admin/limited user stuff. Home Ed. is also lots cheaper, so it's better - less money going to that freak Gates :ick )
-
To be honest I don't care much for the whole pro/anti Microsoft arguement untill it directly affects me. If the software provided is good and works well (and indeed, doesn't cost the Earth) then I'll be happy.
I can pick up Home for about £60... is that good enough? I mean it's not much money all things considered... and it's the full and legal version of the software.

That sounds about right to me - given that with 1£ you could get about AUD$3, that's comparable to the prices you can get here in Australia (yours are $20-50 cheaper or so).

Home is not good enough. Argue all you want about whether Home has all the features of Pro, just disabled, etc etc, but when it comes down to it, get Pro if you insist on XP. And if you insist on Home, be smart about it: before you go and buy it, check it out some other way on your comp so you know you'll be ok with it. Read up on tech-savvy comparisons between the two, and make your descision. But please, don't go commit yourself to XP Home blindly! :shaking:
-
Fair enough, I'm certainly still inclined to go with Pro - now I just need to find it on the cheap :)
-
Guys, you know what the difference is between a legit copy of XP and a bootleg copy? The green certificate of authenticity on the front of the manual which has your license and whatnot. Just buy a license and your warezed copy will become a legit copy.
Anyways, the biggest difference between Pro and Home is that Pro supports dual processor systems. :)
-
Yes, but who has a dual processor system? Anyway, it doesn't support it that well.
-
Several people do actually. I'm saving up for a dual AMD box myself.
-
lil analogy on my system
95 (b and c version ) = frequent crashes
98 = even more frequet crashes
98se = normal methinks
ME = *cough* actauly told me that i have to instald a mainboard before runing ...
NT 4.0sp 5 or 6 = always complaining but never realy crashing
2k (even legit :D ) = laggy slow explorer sometimes crashes no change with service packs
winxp home = crash-o-rama , install problems bleh
xp pro(student licence) = like 98se with better looks :)
suse linux = nice nice nice but cant realy do much with it
dld linux = kaboom
thats all i tryd on my puter
so id say its all about if the os likes ur system or not
first buy it then try it :doubt: i think the otherway round works much better :D
-
Ok, so where could I buy a lisence for XP Pro? :)

ROFLMAO!
Dude, sounds like you should start considering whether some of your computer's components are just slightly screwed up. I can understand ME/95 going bonkers, but 2k? Nahh.

Hm, the plot thickens...

£115 for XP Pro. Around £100 less than I previously have ever found it for. Good?

I assume those question marks are supposed to be pound symbols, correct? I say go for it if you trust that site. :D
-
Sandwich, I think your symbols on your computer are screwed up...
It did the same thing for my ™ symbol (trademark). Get that fixed =p

I thought it was Mozilla at first, but then I loaded it up in IE:

Direct from Microsoft of course. ;)

I'm tempted to give you a prize for that ;)
I think - when alls said and done - I'll go with the £100 version of XP Pro, it's legal and cheap (reletivly).

17.5% tax?!?! Jebbus! And I thought our 9 1/4% state tax was horrible...(highest state sales tax in the entire US!) If I understand it correctly, 1 dollar is roughly 1.6 pounds, right? If so, thats pretty damn cheap for a legit copy of XP Pro. Cheapest I've seen it in the states (retail) is $199.95 with OEM being like $145.
-
Yeah, I've no idea why it's so cheap - but I'm not inclined to ask questions!
And you're right, our tax system sucks... but I can't do much about that...
-
Check your PM btw. ;)

Got it and replied, cheers :)
