Title: Help with FS2 from HOTU + extra files
Post by: naubin on March 08, 2003, 05:56:03 pm
Hi,

I have been searching for this game to buy - can't find it anywhere so have resorted to d/loading.

I managed to get the initial version from home of the underdog. Also found a few sites where I could download the following files that are needed:

sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp

I am using these with the fs2_open_3_5 version of the program.

I have been following the FAQ at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/hotu.html

My problem is that even though I think I have downloaded the right files and copied them over the files in the original directory, some the features are not working:

High res - works
Music - don't work
Voice - don't work
animations - don't work

I can see that there are sub dirs under the data dir called music, voice, and cbanims - all have files that are 0 length.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need the contents of these folders as well as the large .vp files I downloaded?
Or do I need to update a config file or something?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Neil

Maybe I have to use the vpview tool and extract things from these files - or something?

Thanks for any help.

warble_fs2 is music and stu_fs2 is voice, so that ought to work regardless of them being in VP files. Are your VPs in the main directory or did you put them in the data folder? If you put them in data, move them out into the main game folder and try again, as the data folder is just for mods. For animations, you'd need tango2_fs2 and tango3_fs2, though I doubt you'll find any of them for download anywhere as they're HUGE. I'm surprised you even managed to find tango1_fs2 and smarty_fs2 anywhere though, so I suppose it's not out of the question. tango1 holds the act 1 command briefing anis and smary holds the techroom anis, so again those ought to work even from a VP.

Another thing I just thought of. You mentioned you've got files in the subdirs under data. The data directory, as mentioned, is for mods, and anything in that directory and it's subdirs overrides info from VP files. Since you've got files in those dirs, you could try to delete the ones for which you have the corrosponding VP files, and hope that'll fix it. So since you have sparky_fs2, clear out the effects, interface, models, fonts, hud, maps and sounds subdirs, since you have stu_fs2, nuke all files in voice, since you have warble_fs2, nuke the ones in sounds, and since you have smarty_fs2 get rid of everything in intelanims. But since you only have tango1_fs2, and no way to easily tell which anis you have and don't have, i'd leave everything to do with those (cbanims) alone till you get hold of tango2 and tango3.

[edit] Oh yeah, and back up the subdirs first in case something gets messed up doing this.

*Fire Control, target naubin.  Warm up the beam.  And... FIRE!*
(http://members.cox.net/~wmcoolmon/images/welcome.gif)
Exits are to the sides and rear, but good luck getting through them.  Personal flamethrowers are located beneath your seat in case of emergency or naughty disposition.  If you run into any Shivans while crawling through the ductwork, it's probably just Carl.  Give him your lunch and back away slowly, and you'll be fine.

Anyway, to repeat what Exarch said more simply:

1) Place all VP files in the main Freespace2 directory (e.g. X:\Freespace2)

2) Ensure there is nothing in any subdirectory within X:\Freespace2\data except for X:\Freespace2\data\players, which should be left alone or you will lose your pilot and have to make a new one.

If this doesn't solve your problems, try a reinstall now that you have all the vp files downloaded.

All my .vp files are in the main dir.

Well firstly if you delete everything (except player) under the data dir then the game wont start at all. So I put it all back in and then played around.

I ended up emptying out the following folders:

cbanim
intelanims
multidata
music
tables
voice (and all sub dirs)

Now I have music, voice, and hires. Anims I am not sure - I am getting anims in the top left of the main game from other pilots, and in the tech room, but I am not sure what the mission/campaign anims should be - I get static pictures of ships but they don't move or anything. Is this right?

Thanks for your help so far folks. The places I found the files by the way were:

and

Glad to see people are finding the FAQ helpful. I`ll have to update it with info on what to do once you have the extra .vp's

Anyway when you play a mission you`ll always get a mission briefing with icons of the important ships. Sometimes you`ll also get a command briefing (Like at the start of the first mission).

While the command briefing plays you should see an animation in the box in the lower left corner. Those are the command briefings that are in the tango .vp's
Title: Hmmm not sure...

Not sure if I am getting the command briefing animations. Not sure if I mind either but worth one last try.

I am getting the following screen when the mission is being described to me - couldn't work out how to put it on this board so hosted it on my own site:

http://www.myeyespy.com/temp/screen00.jpg

Is this is where you are refering to the animation coming up in the bottom left Karajorma?

Do you know what sub-dir these files are being expanded into so that I can ensure it is blank?

Thanks again for your help.

That's the Mission Briefing screen. That should remain still (you'll only see movement when it moves from one page of the briefing to another or if you click on one of the ships)

The Command briefing on the other hand looks like this. The picture in the bottom left corner should move (at least for the first half of FS2. For the rest to work you`ll need to get hold of the other two Tango files)

Never seen a screen like this...

How exactly do you get to it - is it through the ready room?

Maybe it is because I am on some of the early missions or that I am using the open version of the .exe?

Thanks

The very first command briefing occurs immediately before the first real mission of the main fs2 campaign. So you won't see it if you're still doing the initial 3 training missions. Basically it's Admiral Petrarch welcoming you onboard the GTD Aquitaine and then explaining the current situation regarding the NTF. And yes, it's through the ready room, it plays (or should play) automatically before the mission to which it is attached. If you're not getting it once past training, you could try extracting the mission (Surrender, Belisarius!) from root_fs2.vp, then open it in FRED and see if it still has a command briefing attached (editors -> command briefing, second last option). If there's a command briefing in FRED, then you should get one in game as well.

Well, sort of. It's a squadron briefing, you get them every time you're assigned to a new one. But true, works the same way :)
Title: OK - I think we are there...
Post by: naubin on March 10, 2003, 05:58:10 am
I wasn't seeing it as I was in the middle of a mission, I created a new pilot and saw the anim from the training session.

So now I think I have everything except maybe for the cut-scenes which I am not too worried about.

Thanks for everyones help.

Title: Now, rar everything you got, and presto
Post by: GT-Keravnos on March 11, 2003, 12:55:20 pm
instant FS2 on demand!!!!!!

(Really, make a directory like FS2 BACK UP with that RAR so if something wrong happens, you will have a way to re-install without all the fuss)

From that point on, make different installs, one for each campaign you download. I DO RECOMMEND Casualties of war. I hear Lighting Marshall is good too, but can't download it at the moment.

Have you tried TBP, yet? (The babylon project- total conversion of B5)

(I remember the first time I got TBP to work, THE JOY!!!!!!!)

(and then EXCELLENT EA JANUS!!!!)

:doubt: And watch your hard drive space diminish into nothingness...
Title: modern HD sizes make it possible
Post by: GT-Keravnos on March 11, 2003, 03:12:24 pm
Well, That is what I am getting a 80 G HD for.

I mean, let's face it. Modern computers suck. They don't make 'em like they used to.

New games I bought? Hearts of Iron. Probably IL 2, but that is all.

Why waste hard drive space on games you don't want to play, and not waste it on a GAME THAT you do. On all its installations.

I mean face it. It sucks creating a new pilot, or changing, erasing data files.

Hard drive space is there. You choose how to uuse it. (and thus abuse it.)

Ok. How many FS2 installs have you got?

Two. One for mods, with all the CB anims and stuff, and one basic install for multiplayer. :p

Bah. You`re pushing it with two. One is all you need. Simply rename data drawers and .vp and everything works fine.
