Title: opens REALLY big can o' worms (involves Blender)
Post by: HotSnoJ on March 09, 2003, 04:45:01 pm
I'm pretty sure this idea will be shot down rather quickly, but I'll say it anyway.

Well since there aren't many free 3D modeling programs out there. What if someone tweaked Blender (it is open source) to export cobs or even POFs? Maybe even tweak the uv system to be more like tS.

Yeah, it would be nice to support Blender (http://www.blender3d.org), as it's one of the only truly free 3D modelling programs.

Don't know if they have an extension API (like max or ts), but they provide the source, which is even better.

Coding an export filter is far beyond the realm of a "tweak".

Ooh! Pick, pick, pick! :D

Good idea, even though the first time I opened up Blender I closed it again mighty quick - what a user interface nightmare!

yeah, a gmax converter would be much better.

Better, yes - but it would cost.

Blender is not that hard after you get used to it. The interface is even easier than Max  one.. only different.. . My brother is very good with blender.. and in fact it is using it instead of 3d Max that he used before. Bute there is a little problem.. THERE IS NO UNDO!!!

what would it cost? gmax is free, fs2 is free, no money in the equation, blablabla etc.

Development of a file format exporter is what would cost. Or hadn't you noticed that it's not given out freely to game companies wanting to include gmax modelling in their game?

how about i shoot you for using that poor-data-generating piece of total trash

whatever happened to the 3ds support PCS was going to have. I'd like to see that done.

As long as you make sure all the faces are right before you export to DXF and while in TS2, the geometry works fine.

huh.
I've seen many different exporters around for any format, I don't think anybody paid to do that, and I suspect most of the people who wrote those don't even have the progs. afaik, one is free to write any prog he wants as soon as he doesn't reap code from another prog.

Take your best shot. :D

But seriously, how about shooting me for deciding to use that poor-data-generating piece of total trash after I have a choice in the matter, hmm? But so far, it just so happens that the games supporting gmax file exporting don't have anything else that can export their file format. So go suck on an ice cube to cool down, dude. ;)

True. My left arm was shaking for the remainder of that week. But then again, I could just drop it on someone's foot and impair them for life.

i wrote plugin support into it so someone else who actually uses 3ds and knows it well enogh to be able to write a converter from .3ds (will plenty of reference code from the .cob converter) could write a plugin, but nobody ever got off their lazy asses and wrote one

There exists a script for direct conversion to COB from Blender.

I searched and searched for a script like that and I could not find one. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Does it work?

And great suggestion!!

Yes, it works. I have tested it on some basic non-textured primitives, not any complex objects. Follow the instruction written on the download page. It works only with Blender 2.23 !! I have find this link only by Google  - try 'Blender COB'.  Older versions may be downloaded from http://www.pablosbrain.com/blender3d/files/

Yes or not ? The model might have been exported to DXF and imported to TS2. I don't think that the script is so powerful that we can use only Blender.
