Title: Problems with language
Post by: Hippo on March 11, 2003, 06:47:01 pm
Im not one to speak my mind, but i have noticed that within the last two days, offensive language has increased tenfold. I'm not trying to get threads closed, but the language HAS to end.

As a general rule of thumb, if it stands out to me, then cutback. Children have and do read these boards, as do Gamespy (our Hosts) and excessive swearing only makes us look bad and offends people. If it's with the mood, sure, whatever, but thread titles, overuse, etc. should be cut down. Thank you.

People need not even read a thread. all they have to do is look at the topic, and see that it is like evryone doesn't care about other people. If you wan't to use something to emphasise a statement, hold down shift and press numbers. If you have to quote something, at least censor it.

This sort of thing happened weeks before the VBB was shut down. There are survivors from that board here. They don't want to live through that again.

Ditto. The language has got to end here and now.

No matter how often we post notices about swearing some people simply don't pay attention. :sigh:

It will get to the point where we simply have to start banning multiple offenders. I'm at the point where I don't have so much of a problem with doing this anymore.

I have no problem with asterisk-censoring.

I didn't really mean for this to become a new issue, as it is older than dirt.

I was just reminding him. He's from warpstorm and he started off there getting kicked around by an0n (which quite funny I might add) but just as a reminder, Leave the Stupid for Warpstorm (or the VW )

Talk about what you will, I just find it annoying (compareable to annoying phrases like 'girlfriend' and 'like') when not used properly, and the young un's and GS tend to frown and draw justice on it, so he got his warning. Nothing more to see here,

It was more of a 'general declaration' than a 'I'm about to find a victim'. Anyhow I of all people consider banning to be an ultra last resort measure.

A bit of reinforcement is good from time to time though, shows that we still intend to stick to HLP general rules.

Actually, I don't think this a very old problem. I agree with Hippo, swearing has greatly increased in the last couple of days and weeks.

Can't the admins turn on a "badword-censor" or something? Sure, that would make us feel like children, but it might help save the board...

Post by: diamondgeezer on March 11, 2003, 08:53:39 pm
Either the admins bring in a swear filter or they don't. Until then, speculation serves no purpose.

Post by: Knight Templar on March 11, 2003, 09:02:54 pm
It's been stated before, they could do that if they want, but

1) While it does save face, it doesn't do much other than make you feel like a retarded 5 year old and all it really does is let you imagine new ways to swear that you probably wouldn't have thought of before.

2) An extreme measure shouldn't have to be taken like that. We're all (for the most part) mature enough here to swear when appropriate. Some aren't, but they are dealt with, and then there's some who just need a slap on the wrist and a reminder.

3) If anybodies gonna get the filters turned on, it's going to be me. Back off boyo's :p

Once again I say, bringing this up over and over again just makes the general uncontrolable retarded feeling higher, so lets just leave it at Control yourself, or we'll control you.

Is it OK for me to make reference to the fashion corporation French Connection UK - for example, 'stop fcuking swearing!'

Only if it's tasteful and funny, in this case you make the grade but don't push it. ;)

Didn't there used to be a swear filter? I seem to recollect that when I joined, the word "B*gger" was censored, along with many others. Why was the filter removed?

In fact, "B*gger" was my second post, that is how I know.

while we're on the topic of naughty talk, I might as well ask, how bad are bloody and bugger in English ?
Title: Problems with language
Post by: Hippo on March 12, 2003, 05:53:25 pm
in Americian English? its more of a joking word. saying "that bloody...(place occupation here)" is like saying that its a 'funny' job
Title: Problems with language

No, I know what it means in english.

I don't know the full meaning in English English.

Post by: diamondgeezer on March 12, 2003, 07:10:14 pm
'Bloody' is about 25-50% as strong as the big F word, but it greatly depends on the individual, as with all swearing.

'Bugger' is a minor curse, stronger than 'damn' but usually not as strong as '****' (pardon my Klatchian, admins). I use it in a 'doh!' sort of way, or when describing someone as a daft bugger. It's used in a lot of comedy writing over here, since it's both mild and in itself fairly amusing. Terry Pratchet's Discworld inhabitants use it a fair old bit, when it's comically appropriate. For example:

How dare you?!?:D

Long live the North! Anyway, daft is far to great a word not to use. And I use "bugger" in a similar way to you, DG. If I drop something or trip up. It can only be used with a northern accent really, as in most southern accents it becomes "bagger", and sound rubbish.

Leave the Stupid for Warpstorm (or the VW

1)  VW is older, better, and more experienced than you Knight_Templar... that's why you feel uncomfortable there, and therefore never visit it.
2)  VW doesn't tolerate bad language as HLP does.  you post bad language continuously there, you get banned.  simple as that.
maybe that's why you don't post there much.  that's a good thing.  stay away from it, it doesn't want you.

But yeah, good issue brought up here Hippo.
In general i don't use bad language at all, but i must admit i've slipped on some occasions but only where it's very big ;)

Stealth, don't start again.

Hardly anyone goes to the VWBB because its generally the equivilant of the florida retirement center of the FS community, which, infact you are right, has everything to do with the VW being old and generally drearier than HLP. I go there for BWO, and the occasional boredom post. Is there something bothering you about that?

Furthermore, your uncalled for and annoying comments against me is waaay old and nobody really likes it anymore, so if you could just do the public a favor and don't bring us your stupid. There's no need for it here.

If you have a problem with me, then spam my email box or kill my dog like a civilized person, nobody wants to read about it.

i don't fight with 14 year olds.

the only reason you don't like Volitionwatch is it's above your head.  it's for veterans of FS, that's why you don't like it

And Stealth, VWatch isn't "for veterans of FS". As I'm certain Icefire would say if he were here, It's for everyone. In fact, I think there may be slightly more newbies at VWatch than HLP.. However, I don't want to get involved in yet another of your and Knight Templar's fights, so I'll stop talking now. I just wanted to make that one VWatch point (and maybe add my voice to that of others in saying Take your fights elsewhere!

well it's not FOR veterans... it IS veterans.
obviously any n00b (take Knight_Templar for example) can join, but it's composed mainly of oldschool FS1 players.  that's just the way it is.

You tell me what makes a person a vetran?

There piloting skillz?
The amount of years they played FS1/FS2?
There kill count?
The amount of mods they made?

Please tell me, because I play both games a for a few years now so that must mean i a vetran? who cares If I am a vetran or a newbie?

Hey, this world would be a better (and funnier) place if you just used choice replacement words, like Carp, Fudge, mitch, and so on.  What's funnier than yelling out "Oh, CARP!"  in the middle of a filled hallway.  And I will personally give anyone a truckload of carp if they ever use the phrase "Your mom!"  Fudge I that.   ANd KT, Stealth, Can't you two just "give peace a chance?"  Do things the Canadian Way:  get a comittee working on the problem, waste a ton of money on the comttee and then just sit back and enjoy your Canadian/Blue and Backbacon and your all good.  As a bonus you won't even go to Mell for this:p

dudes, I try. I find it very annoying too, but there's not much to do. He consistantly brings up things thaat really are unrelated to him or me at all and tries to insult me with them for no reason and out of nowhere. There's not much I can do. I pressume he'd understand that people don't like it, but ignores it.

There isn't much I can do anymore other than laugh. So I'd suggest you either get something done about this or laugh along with me. This has great comedic value.

I changed my mind, I DO find it funny when KT and Stealth argue. They argue like four year olds. Always trying to insult each other because they can't find a reason why the other person is incorrect. (this is more one of you than both, but I don't feel like starting a flamewar on who I think is the more inmature)

So, carry on until an admin closes this thread.

I guess.. if you could really call this (or anything else) an arguement.

Lately they tend to consist of him finding some weird connection to something which makes me a newbie after i've been here for a year and playing freespace for 4, and in turn I laugh at him for saying something so stupid  and remind him that he should take it up with me and not the boards...

:blah:

[The fact that I can even say 'lately' makes me cringe..]

actually Darkage, when i say "veteran", i never mean someone who's got a lot of kills, mission time, etc.  i mean someone who's been playing/involved with Freespace for a while.  and that doesn't just mean involved in the community.

oh, and Knight_Templar... whatever happened to me being on your "ignore" list!?

Why did you take me off?
That would solve your above problem very fast.  I told you you wouldn't be able to resist taking me off your "ignore" list after a week.  Looks like i was right.

I've got better things to do with my life than hang around looking for trouble.  get away, never talk to me, never say anything to me.  i don't like you, i never will like you, you will always be as "DePhatPimp" (oh wait, that was before your time)

Now when i'm around you, i get mad, and because of that, i insult you whenever i can.  i don't like you.  so why not get away from me

Now don't make fun of Volitionwatch.  It's cooler than you are, or will ever be.  It may not have a community as busy as HLP or Warpstorm or whatever, but it's a very cool place, with very cool information.  Most of the community are veterans of Freespace (see my above post).  To you it may seem pathetic, but it's really not.

EDIT:

OK, let Knight_Templar... let me make this short and sweet:
From this day on, i will never talk to you, help you, answer any questions, or do anything to benefit you in any way.  Furthermore, i will never argue with you (publicly or privately), nor will i direct arguments at you.  You can talk **** all you want, but i don't like you, and you're starting to seriously annoy me.   Don't talk to me, you're annoying.  I know deep down in your 14 year old brain you are wanting me to keep arguing with you, but one of us have to take the initiative, so here:

Go away.

Knight_Templar:  I'm out, i don't argue with 14 year olds.  come back when you're matured some.  unfortunately these last months you've dragged me down to your 14 year old level.

Would both of you (Stealth and KT) shut the **** (insert favorite four letter word) up! Jesus! You two are like fourth graders (no offense to any fourth graders here, if there are any)

I'm looking at your birthdays in your profiles. I think you are both old enough to stop this.

EDIT: Somebody already said it, but "give peace a chance"
