I never got to really see it but I have read about it.
Does anyone have archived flamewars or any of the nasty exchanges that hallmarked the VBB's final days? They would make interesting reading.
-
I believe that the Infamous ZylonBane archived some of the more important and useful threads, and was himself responsible for many flamings.
:remembers the VBBQ, and the VBB hammer of justice, which was made into a secondary weapon minimod.....:

Why the heck do you want to read about flamewars. If you asked me those should not be archived. Flamewars are sick. Actually when I was on VBB, I didn't even know about: You will get flamed if you mention FS3. I got the Internet back then for the first time and I got FS2 only 2 weeks before I went to VBB (which was in May 2001)
-
flamewars is what happens when noobs don't bother to read a couple of posts before they join up. not doing so is retarded, and you should be flamed for it ;)
wish I had saved threads back then...
-
Hehe. I remember being a n00b.
I think my first thread, true to form (but maintaining originality), was a "Let's make our own FS3" thread.
And, *coughs and points to the SCP in a 'told-ya-so' kind of way*.
-
hey, I remember that one... vaguely.
that's back when you were funny.
-
You saying I'm not funny?
*grabs a huge cigar and his Groucho wig*

Ya told us nuthin'. If it's not from V, it ain't FS3.
Anyway, what happened in the last VBB thread that was so bad it got deleted?

Well yeah but people get also flamed because they ask something which they didn't even know about before and then people start spending about 5 minutes thinking on how to flame them instead of giving them a straight answer to the question.

I still have a whole page of threads from the VBB a few days before death... I can upload it if ya like (and I find the time :p)
-
trust me, dude, you do not want to see the VBB :D
-
I lurked at the VBB on a few occations for a few months at a time as my interest in FS would come and go. I favourably remember the 'dead frozen goat of justice' clipping wrong doers under the chin with it's razor hooves a number of times. But who the heck was it who used that anyway?
-
Has anyone archived anything from the Squadwar forum? Some of that stuff made great reading. :D
-
The only thing I have archived from the VBB is Plasma's jokes.
-
Read TAS, you'll know all you need to know.
plus 30 pages of the same post,.
-
To tell you the truth, I never was flamed. I gues I was just lucky in reading a few posts before almost making the fatal mistake in typing a thread called "When is fs3 coming out?"....:sigh: I'm coming out of the closet now. I mostly lurked around the Modding forum, trying to get people to join my Space: Above and Beyond mod. I remember even getting a invitation from HLP for them to host me! :D But no one seemed interested. The only thing I got was two models. One of the hammerhead fighter and the other of the Prototype chiggie fighter. Then I decided to see if anyone was interested in making a freespace movie. Some were interested, but most thought it a bad idea. Then I came over here, posted about it, and stayed ever since. Thats my true oddessy here. The true main reason was to keep away from the flame wars that were just starting. I mean people were attacking EVERYONE! I was a afraid. Afraid of ZylonBane! I knew it would be only a matter of time until he found me and flamed me, so I escaped! ;)

Ah, the good ol' VBB days...
And be sure to read TaS. Someone around here has the link. (I actually read about 20 pages of that before my brain went numb)

Jeez you guys, talk about being helpful! Not even one measly link!
Here's the latest (I think) archive of the VBB before closure: http://web.archive.org/web/20020205082928/vbb.volition-inc.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi
And here (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://vbb.volition-inc.com/) you can get to the various archives of the main Volition homepage and follow the link to the forums from there, perhaps there are different pages available from earlier versions.

Only a few threads appear to be archived by Wayback...

Yup. The length of your sig would've had you on it in a heartbeat.

If I'm forced to start using Irony tags, I'm gonna start cracking heads.

at least my signature is small enough to let me break that rule on a regular basis.

Ok, ground rules for siggys are up to 8 lines of text at a browser window width of 1024 pixels, standard-sized text. In other words, I'm straddling the fence with my siggy. If yours is longer, shorten it. :D

what about locations ;)

When your location extends the length of a single-line post, it's too long for comfort. :doubt:
Besides, all we asked for was a location, not a full-detail report on all one's current projects and positions. :p
-
I remember when I first got FS1. I joined VBB looking for fellow gamers. When I made my first model and started :thepimp: ing it people would tell me to go to HLP. When I asked where to go fro tutorials and stuff related they told me to go to HLP. Never until I asked did they tell me HLP was short for Hard Light Productions and a link to get there.
*Shudders*
*looks for his own post at VBB*
-
heh, I joined when even mentioning FS3 wasn't a heresy. ;) Hell, my very first post was a workaround for [V] to release FS3 without being sued by Interplay....by ASCIIing the title! :D (some of you may recall that thread) I wonder if Mike Kulas is still waiting for me to show up with a horn so he can call security to have me arrested.

by ASCIIing the title, he means (i think) replacing "I"s with "l" (lower-case "L")etc. etc. etc.
i think... i've heard of that before :D
-
............Methinks he means making the title image out of ASCII characters. Like you do with ASCII art.

or how about making it 1337?

no more copyright problems. :D
-
hehe, that was pretty much it. ;)
I think that was the last FS3 thread that didn't have any flaming whatsoever...other than the usual *****ing about Interplay. ;)

Go check the Forum Leaders page and you'll see at least one good example of 'too long'.
