Title: Hero
Post by: Stealth on March 15, 2003, 03:50:18 pm
Has anyone seen this movie?  It's supposed to be the best asian movie ever made, and the most expensive too:  $240,000,000 HK.

(i don't know the conversion rate, but i think one hong kong dollar is like 80 american cents).

It just came out in Hong Kong last month or the month before, and it comes out in the US in November 2003.

//www.herothemovie.com

i saw it last week, it's awesome.  definately worth all the raves the critics are making of it!

Bought it, saw it, old news.

The movie wasn't that bad, except for certain issues with the quality of the dvd itself :doubt: go see it when it comes out over here, far better than Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (for one, the name doesn't sound like a pr0n flick).

Hmm... Looks like they're picking up where Creeping Monkey, Flying Ostrich (whatever it was called) left off... Still this looks rather promising. :D

You had problems with the DVD quality?  I've got the (2 disk) VCD, and the quality's awesome.  no flaws.  would you like me to tell you where you can download it? (i uploaded both disks)

But yeah, i agree with you that it's far better than Crouching Tiger.  better story, better acting, better everything

If it was dubbed, I'd have to seriously mangle someone; but then again, I didn't need to read the subtitles either :p  That might have something to do with it.

I particularly despise dubbing, it is one of my few pet hates.
I was unfortunate enough to get a pretty great Jet Li film called 'Fist of Legend' that was dubbed. Having seen the subtitled version I was annoyed to witness the most painful use of 'artistic licence' ever. In short they entirely changed the character from someone who's trying to do the right thing into a bravado showoff. What a mess. Crouching tigers dubbing was also remarkably stupid. Why do they let people do that?!?
[/rantmode]

The URL would be most appreciated Stealth.

because the average american audience is too stupid/lazy to read subtitles... they want to sit back, not concentrate, and just watch.
reading means you have to concentrate

I didn't watch it because all my friends who watched it said it was boring and a waste of movie-goers money.

And I thought it was action packed.;)

Well, I've seen a movie called Volcano High ( Korean movie I think ). The movie was damn hilarious and with pretty cool effects, and a funny plot ( students VS teachers, mwahahaha ), and I heard people say it was boring :wtf: . Same for Shaolin Soccer :eek2:

since nothing's really changed in that year (i.e. the movie still hasn't been released in the US yet), i guess quite a few people care.

better late than never.

note the "HK" after the amount... it's not American dollars, it's Hong Kong currency...

HK$240,000,000 at a conversion rate of HK$1:US$0.8 works out at: US$192,000,000 ~ US$200mil

wrong.  HK$240,000,000 converts to $30,846,248.22 USD.

$1.00 (USD) = $7.78052 (HKD)

oh and squeak, yeah, you're right, it was supposed to come out November 2003, but they postponed release (for the second time) to either March 2004 or May 2004, i forget which.

Before you get all uber-tard next time, you should note that an0n took the conversion rate from your post.

before you go uber-gay next time, you should note that i never said i knew the conversion rate:

i don't know the conversion rate

And you should also remember that my post you were referring to is almost a year old... conversion rates change you know
Title: Hero
Post by: Knight Templar on February 25, 2004, 11:06:26 pm
But you said you thought it was at an eighty percent conversion rate.

And regardless of whether conversion rates changes, the amount of money spent remains constant you know. If the movie has been made already, then they aren't spending any more money, so conversion rates don't really matter. They still spent 240 mil HK, or ~200 Mil dollars, you know?

*sigh*

1)  I said
Quote
i don't know the conversion rate, but i think one hong kong dollar is like 80 american cents
note the words "I don't know" and "I Think"...

2)  True, they spent HK$240mil at the time, but i'm not sure of the conversion rate.  I can't remember what i was thinking almost a year ago, but i'm sure when i made that post (with what i thought the conversion rate was) it had changed before that.  either way, the back of the VCD said that Hero cost $240,000,000.00 HK to make.  So i don't know what you're arguing with me about, conversion rate or not, it's a ****load of money, and i'm sure if you watch the movie, you'll understand why it cost so much money.

3)  What in the hell is up with you always taking an0n or Stryke's back when it's got nothing to do with you!?  If i'm arguing with an0n, realize that he doesn't need a 14 year old to jump in, OK?

4)  Now, whether you like it or not, I'm going to upload Hero, and people are going to download it, and watch it, and appreciate it, such as J3v6r and Maeglamor... so if you and an0n have nothing better to do than come here and criticize, i don't need it, so you're just wasting your time, got it?  kthx kid.

Post by: Stealth on February 25, 2004, 11:31:55 pm
yeah i know, but it's because it hasn't been released in America yet.  one of the funniest examples of the delay between movie releases in Asia and in America is "Iron Monkey".  It was made in 1991 or 1993, (can't remember which), but it was only released in America mid-2001. I remember because I bought Iron Monkey in 1999, and two years later i started seeing trailers for it and i was like WTF.  it was pretty cool to see it on the big-screen though.  I'm not sure exactly when Hero was made, but it's been around for at least one and a half years to my knowledge.  Of course it figures that America would only release it 2 years+ after it was released in Asia ;)

and yeah, it was a good movie  :)

1) Note how I said "you thought". an0n was going by what you thought.

2) I'm pointing at that you don't really have grounds to be a prick about price other than your own twisted, tard logic.

3) What the hell is up with you always being such a tard' when it's got nothing to do with you!? I don't "take an0n's back" in matters concerning you. God knows Jessica Simpsons could win an arguement with you. No, I "jump in" merely because I despise you just as much as they do, and somehow, your twisted logic and sad mind make me chuckle.

4) I don't really care, although bringing up such an old topic did seem kind of silly either way. I'm not really participating here for any other reason than my own entertainment, not a total waste of my time though. :) kthx kid.

"tard"?  "twisted logic and sad mind"?  haha nice insults.

i'm going to quote what you said because it's funny how your logic works. but i can't argue with someone who doesn't have common sense or know how to reason, so I'm going to have to be the better man here, and walk away.  kthx

And Jessica Simpson could win an argument against the Harvard Debate Team Captain. He'd be too busy just staring at her, mouth agape, to even muster enough mental strength to call her a gimp and run away snickering.

Really, do it. Everyone's starting to think down to his level now, and when posts start ending with **** like "kthx" it's a sign that either someone needs to take a flamethrower to the forum servers and all active users or there's a troll in the house. Stop it, really, you're making my brain hurt with the sucking.
