Here's something i was thinking about today...
Alright..there you are 5/10/15/ or 20 years from now, and you find Freespace1 or 2 in an old closet or in the bottom of a shoebox, etc.
What would you do at that point. I think that i would like to play it again. Then i would realize that almost nobody plays it anymore:( (more on the 15-20 year end....)
So ...what would you do...or any thoughts...?
-
Play it again of course, because I have done exactly this countless times with other games. :D going through Descent 2 at the moment...
-
Ditto. And finally make a crazy Battle-of-Endor-style mission with umpteen zillion fighters in it because a computer 15 years in the future will be able to handle that without breaking a sweat. Or even better, re-Fred Bearbaiting so that the juggernauts actually deploy some their wings upon wings of fighters to help/resist Alpha 1.
-
You wont be able to run fs in ten years time. It will be like trying to run Maniac Mansion nowadays.

liike windows 2025 will let you run FS2 :p

'Tis what I said.
It wont be ablt to recognize less than 10gig of RAM.

FS2 has become the defacto standard of all sci-fi fighter programs AND is the Freeware king of the world?
Possible version FS2 open 10.98 :)
You guys are selling FS2 way short... ;7
-
FS_open 10.98? more likely would be 100.98, the way these releases are coming, we would have 100.5.3.4 or something :doubt:

Chances are if you are here than you mod/ or use mods... Modding a game tends to lenghten the life of it. How long I can't say (upgrades in technology/programming determine that), but I really enjoy FS2 and found it to be the perfect meduim to do what I want (have everything , er a little of everything) at least for now.. If something else comes along that give better options and easier modibility to make the game what I want it to be than I'll have to change over . BUt you never forget teh classics! How many of you still play packman once in a while? Or galazian, or other ANCIent games that are long beyond there profit days...? I still have games from the 3Do I wish I could play. And D&D games fromt eh Apple IIe! Anyone remember Karateka! YA! (die Eagle!!!)
-
PcMan, i play that once in a while, still pretty hard!
-
Don`t forget about the possibilities of emulators etc. There is a reasonable chance that by that far in the future MS will have made mistake after mistake and gone the way of Commadore or Sinclair.
In which case emulators will probably be in use to play games like Freespace.
-
yeah :doubt:
I'm still looking for a 3dfx1 ( glide1 ) emulator :doubt:

Emulators for an entire (popular) OS will be much more common than ones for little bits of it.
-
Windows 3.1 Emulator?
Hate to think.

What you need is a Glide wrapper (http://www.voodoofiles.com/type.asp?cat_id=14). If you haven't searched for them yet... start from that link or google around yourself. I haven't tried any of those myself, but they ought to work.

No need for one...

Thought I'd revive this and just get some insight on what people think almost 3ish years from when it was started.
Still playing here :D

My computer in 2025: 40 terrabyte hard drive
15 gig memory
25 inch plasma-flat screen-flat pannel monitor
pentium 17 processer
still no graphics card
sub-woofers as speakers
*installs FS2*
FREDs a BoE mission with 50 cap ships Vs. 50 cap ships and 700 fighters+bombers Vs. 700 fighters and bombers. Plays.
Leaving that mission running, I go off playing Half life 7, doom 6, X12 ALL at the same time.
-
I'm probably thinking:
Wow, these guys were pretty good, though in REAL life, vasudans always sound angry, like you just kicked their mother in the head, even if the translation computer tells you they're saying nice things.
-
Dang, it's been night of the lving dead lately.
-
in 25 years there would be a new standard of input and CDs would be unable to be read. Period. Closed.
No More Thread Necrophilia!

Besides, it'd be taking backwards compatability a bit too far methinks ;) Considering that 30 years ago, we were still 5 years from the ZX81. Anyway, I'm with Raa on this, bumping old threads is becoming a bit of a habit, I don't mind if theres a logical reason, but unless theres a specific reason, you may as well make a new post ;)
