My comp just crashed, had to go and format it. Lost practically all of my modeling programs, so I have the fun job of redownloading them. Now, off to find the motherboard driver CD.....

98 is better than all save 2000 Pro.

I don't think I've heard of an OS yet that didn't have some issues. I mean if it crashed so hard you have to reformat,.. it was something more than 98 crashing on you bud. Like if you have any "unoffical" demos shall we say,.. good chance you got tagged with a virus. Could really be anything.
-
Pfff, 98 is nothing compared to ME. Me just decides to take a walk every now and then. I was forced to reformat about...3 times. Every time ME surprised me with some dumbass bug which made my comp unusuable. And that was before I got internet...
-
Damn I guess I'm lucky then :) All the dodgey things I've had on this computer ...and only once did i have to reformat,.. and that was because the Harddrive itself locked up (the mechanical type lockup).

*looks at 98SE*
Working fine for me for the last year or so.

Oh jesus don't get me started on ME.
Fine. ME sucks major ass. Of all the **** microsoft has made, ME is definitly 100% the worst.
It crashes practically every SECOND on my comp. And it has no DOS? ARGH!!!

Same here. Hell, I haven't even had a crash that requires start-up with XP.

Wrong. Start the comp with CD support and you've got the whole thing.

You must have a different 98SE then me cause I've got DOS right here. :p
-
uh, he is talking about ME there. :p
ME works okay for me, with only the occassional (once a week) crashes and good speed otherwise. The main problem I have with it is what was already mentioned, the lack of a true DOS mode. What's even worse is that it will not read the config.sys file properly and just automatically deletes anything in there whenever it starts up, so I cannot use emm386 and such things in windows either. :(
-
Try edit it under dos mode. Might work.
-
yeah, I did that; every time it starts up, ME seems to make a copy of the config.sys file called config.bak, after which it erases the contents of the original config.sys file (but not delete the file itself). :wtf:
-
So typical for microcrap... :doubt:
-
98SE worksw for me for 2,5 years now, excpet for one driver issue, wich caused me to format, and now an virusscan issue, but that ain't 98, that's mcaffee. IMO, 98SE is one of the better OS's maid by M$, however, ME has it's own advantages.

He said WinME, not Win98
you guys realize that just because your computer crashes doesn't necesarily mean it's your OS, right? heh :) ;)
I personally like 2kpro best, and then XP and 98se
-
I am using XP home and I am happy with it. :)
Anyway, if you wanna have dos in your ME or XP or such, you can make a Win 98 startup disc, turn off your PC, set in the disc and turn it on again. Sorry if this has been said before. I didn't have time to read all the posts.

restart in dos mode and type
ver
then press enter
and look what it says

I'm fairly sure it was a corrupted file somewhere in the OS (for some reason my comp shut down wrong about 50% of the time in W98SE). Oh well, switched OSes to XP Home, let's see how long before I hate this one.
