Title: Money
Post by: Stryke 9 on March 21, 2003, 01:59:28 pm
Ah'm gettin' po here, and it'd be nice to be able to actually turn a profit for once from all this ****ing around and experimenting in CG. Anyone know what the average take is from selling high-poly models on stock- say at Renderosity or summat? Seems a lot of people are doing it, and that'd indicate they're getting something out of it (seeing the cost of webspace/hosting), but maybe they're all just morons. Anyone know?

At any rate, it'd be cool to have a good excuse to NOT go start working at Wendy's or Office Depot.

Your best bet is to contact some local clubs, bars and (*gag*) disco's.

Y'know, the kinda places that'd kick out fliers.

And tell 'em if they ever need any flier graphics doing, you can do some high quality ones for pretty cheap.

That way, not only do you get paid, but all the people who see the fliers also see the small-print saying "Graphics by Stryke 9 Productions™" and thus they generate more work.

Yeah... 'cos the clubbing scene's so great in suburban Virginia.

Well, MAYBE. But I already do photography for bands and **** (off and on), so I've kinda got that area covered, I'm looking for something a little more... **** if I know, freelance, maybe. Stuff where I can use all my fun particle tricks and make big, memory-expensive models that took me four straight days to make break each other. This'd be one approach, sucking up to the local tech companies might be another... I'm not sure. Reviewing my options, but I'm pretty sure that ain't one.

Prostitution.  Just don't get addicted to crack or accept an invitation to some guy's pig farm.

Well go search through inter-****e like Archspace and convince the whores who run it to commission some models for site-graphic purposes.

There must be thousands of crappy sci-fi MMORPG's clamouring for some good ship-graphics.

But methinks building a reputation would be a greater advantage right now than going and trying to make money. Hang around places like www.3dgladiators.com/forums and pimp yo' wares. Do stuff for free on high-profile sites so you've got something of a portfolio should someone request one.

I'm pretty sure he's in jail now, but they might still be investigating.  Maybe Sesq knows, I haven't been following it.

I've got two suggestions (from experience):

1)  Work at Home Depot.  It's a hell of an easy job, and the starting pay is $8.00 an hour.

2)  Work as a waiter for a restaurant (Wendys, McDonalds, etc. do not count as restaurants :doubt: )... you get paid like $2.15 an hour, but you keep 95-97% of tips.  on a good night, you'll work five hours and walk out with $100.00 tips in your pocket (that's excluding credit tips and wages)

Ugh.

You people DO realize that I wasn't asking for tips on fast food places to work or crappy alternate jobs, yes? I'm fairly sure I'm qualified for a burger-flipping job or a counter jockeyship, and there's no shortage of horrible, nasty-ass places to get minimum wage wasting my time, that's not an issue- the issue is that I'd sooner go unemployed than work there, and I'm not gonna be unemployed for a bit anyway (I can make $10 an hour typing up and archiving stuff, if I don't mind stultifying work and handcramps that don't go away for a week). I. Want. An. Enjoyable. Source. Of. Chump. Change.

I. Want. To. Know. Whether. Selling. Stock. Models. Makes. Money.

At. All.

Is that clearer now?

and an0n: I'm doing free stuff occasionally, not anywhere really prestigious (about on line with here, mostly), but it's not really prestigious unless it can pay. Networking... eh, that I'm working on. I gotta find someone who isn't trying to do something either moronic or impossible given my current software (such as give them fully textured models in native Lightwave format, or, really, MAX if neither they nor I are willing to wait twelve years for my older computer to process it).

Pickton's on trial now, but there's a media blackout on it in Canada, so we get to hear nothing.

If for some reason you want to read about such things ( :wtf: ), searching the archives at http://www.cbc.ca/news/ would be your best bet.  But there isn't much info since the trial began, of course.
