I predict that LotR will be shamefully ignored same as it was last year.
I further predict that when that happens the vast majority of people on this board won`t give a rats arse who does win (I know for certain I won`t).

Indeed. there are far more important things happening in the world, like the fact that we are now at war, despite there being little or no support for it at home.
Films are there to be watched, not to be gloated over by all and sundry and given pointless awards that serve no purpose other than to spawn useless sequels.
-
I don`t mind them giving awards. What I mind is them setting a catagory like best film and then giving the award to something that isn`t.
Lets face it. The Fellowship of the Ring was the best film out last year. Even if you don`t like fantasy it's pretty undeniable that the scope of the movie was great and the fact that it managed to stay very true to a book many had said was unfilmable was hugely impressive.
Add in that the acting by people like Sir Ian McKellen would have been impressive even if you didn`t consider the fact that most of the time he was forced to act to thin air
Then consider the fact that it didn`t win any of the major awards and you have to wonder how the Academy can claim with a straight face that they didn`t think it deserved to win.
As far as I`m concerned the oscars have shown themselves to not be objective and as such I consider the Bafta's a far better judge of what movies deserve awards.

They all look like they majorly suck besides probably TTT, but I haven't even seen that yet.

Have you been living under a rock for the last three months?
-
Actually, it's a rather large rusted Coke Can with the words "I (heart) Wilson" scrawled on the side.
-

It kills me, any time there is a really good "genre" movie, like The Two Towers, it gets the award for best effects, best music sometimes, and if hell's a little chilly, best cinematography. But I defy you to name one "genre" movie that has every won Best Picture. I mean it's like a film's automatically out of the running if it has a larger Effects budget than Payroll for the Cast and Crew.
**Note by Genre, I mean Science Fiction or Fantasy.**
-
Road to Perdition was a pretty cool movie. Did it win anything other than best cinematography?
-
Nicole Kidman! Whoooo! :D
-
damn artsy fartsy touchy feely movies
TTT should have won, I mean in the "best adaptation from a book" I was like "If TTT doesnt win, then I refuse to place any credence in this ****"...it wasnt even nominated:wtf:
I dont see how the works of Tolkien cause loose out to ****ing dancinig..I mean dancing...thats like giving a '84 geo the award for best car over a Rolce Royce. A flying rolce-royce with golden wheels and a chrome finish and a glove compartment with an enless supply of cholocate bars
you're right, no scifi/fantasy film ever wins, cause they consider them "childish".. they cant see past the first layer of fakeness and pretensiousness, thats why chicago won
-
EHehehe. The director who did "Bowling for Columbine" spoke out about Bush and Blair and Iraq. The first time in the history of the Oscars did someone get BOOed off the stage! :D I felt so embarrased for him. :o

DIRECTING
THE PIANIST
(Roman Polanski)
at least they got that right.
-
You're quite right.

Michael Jackson won an oscar?
-
I was talking about Roman Polanski. How a convicted child molester who can`t set foot in America because he'd be sent to jail manages to get a nomination for best director when Peter Jackson gets nothing is beyond me.
-
Well I don't really agree with that. Though I really am shocked that PJ wasn't nominated, I don't think he should have replaced Polanski. The Pianist is a GOOD movie. PJ should have replaced the guy who directed Chicago. Chicago wasn't any good, and nothing compared to LOTR or the Pianist.
And about the child molestation. Well, thats half right. It was actualy a "sex with a minor" conviction. He supposedly didn't know how old she was. And she didn't file for the rape either, it was her parents. Though I don't agree with what he did, I should think that he got a bit more exentric after Charles Manson & Co. Got a little knife happy with Polanski's family. Not to mention the fact that he is one of the few people who survived through out ww2 in the concentration camps of Poland.
The Pianist was a good movie and it deserves that oscar amongst those that were nominated. Of course if PJ would have also been nominated, and Polanski won, then I might think a bit more on how they came to that discision.
Polanski deserved to be nominated, but the director for "the Hours" and "Chicago" didn't.
-
Getting a 13 year old drunk and drugged up so you can have sex with her which even she claims wasn`t by consent is pretty close to my definition of child molestation. As for his defense that he didn`t know I might have been more willing to believe it if he hadn`t run away.
I wouldn`t use the murder of Sharon Tate as a defense either since that happened 9 years earlier.
As for his defense that he didn`t know she was 13 even if she was an adult her story sounds pretty much like rape anyway. As far as I`m concerned the guy should have been extradited to the US and left to rot in a cell.
Read this (http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/GoodMorningAmerica/GMA030130Geimer_Polanski.html) version of the story and then try to tell me he shouldn`t be in jail right now.
-
Like you said, that is just a version. And all versions of "the story" are biased to their own beliefs. As is everything.
And like I said, I didn't agree with what he did to that girl. And anyone would run after that kind of conviction. But I'm pritty sure having his wife killed does affect his mentallity even if it did take place only 9 years earlier. But I'm not deffending him as a person. His movie the pianist was a good one. I'm deffending that. And it was well directed.
And yes, for what he did, he should spend some time in jail.
-
Which is why I don`t particularly like the idea of him getting the free publicity of an oscar. I`m certainly not going to give him any money and If I do choose to watch his movie I`ll make sure I`ve got hold of it via the internet or in another way that doesn`t put more money into the already healthy bank balance of a convicted child rapist.

so a child molester can't be a good director? One doesn't prevent the other you know.

Maybe but you won`t see me hanging an original Adolf Hitler watercolour on my wall no matter how good he was at them. You certainly won`t see me giving someone like Polanski a standing ovation either.
-
well, Hitler wasn't good. no, really. Polanski is one of the greatest directors of the 20th century.
-
I don't think he cares...

Got it in one. Wouldn`t care if Hitler was universally acknowledged as the greatest painter of all time and at least with someone like Hitler the artist is already dead so you`re not giving the guy any money.
-
I don't think you should asociate Hitler with Polanski. It was Hitler who KILLED Polanski's immedate family in WW2.

I`m not equating them. I`m using Hitler as a more extreme example of what I mean. I don`t want to give money to rapists or mass murdering dictators. Yeah one is worse than the other but I can choose not to have anything to do with either.

"Half wanted to carry you out on your shoulders and half wanted to throw fruit at you"
"Oh that's not what I saw...I saw the entire audience stand up and applaud."
