This is something that has plagued me for years (or a year rather). While some have been pushing for side turrets, would it be that difficult to allow multipart turrets that don't have normals pointing straight up or down? Such turrets currently fail to track properly, although the firing positions do work.
Could you read in the normal for the turret and just assume that the FOV is going to be based on a normal perpendicular to the length and width of a ship? Thus leaving the FOV unharmed and allowing ships to have turrets that don't point up as they come out of subspace?
Please tell me I'm not just crazy.

I think this has been discussed before:

Yes, I know, but nothing came of it and therefore I'm bringing it up again ;)

ok I understand. I din't mean to be mean. I was bring that up as a reference. I would love this feature since TBP turrets(ie the NOVA) look so stupid with their turrets up in the air.

You think they look daft, you wanna see it on the back of an ISSAPC... :ick

Unless you've seen the liberty with its guns pointing straight up, you aint seen nothing. She looks like she's surrendering for Pete's sake.

There is no problem human inginuety can't solve, or human stupidity can't make!

I just realized yet another problem with my theory, the engine would have no way of determining if the fov is for the dorsal or ventral arc, so therefore I propose a new flag in the subobject section, two actually: "$FOV_Dorsal" and "$FOV_Ventral" ;)
Any takers?
Bobboau?

And for side turrets:
"$FOV: Port"
"$FOV: Starboard"
Or perhaps
"$FOV: Left"
"$FOV: Right"
To make it idiot-proof! :D
