Title: Hard Drive Detection Problems
Post by: Fineus on March 24, 2003, 10:06:41 am
Hey all, having recently gotten hold of a second hard drive and having eagerly plugged it - I've hit something of a brick wall. Both drives are detected in BIOS but I've got nothing when it comes to "My Computer". System specs are as follows:

Win 98
Chaintech Zenith 7NJS Mobo
IBM 40GB Primary drive (Main drive)
Maxtor 80GB Slave (secondary - the new one)
512MB RAM

The drive has power, and is detected on startup. Any thoughts?

You mean they don't come pre-formatted?

That'd explain a lot... :doubt:

I'll go try it now - let you know...

Also check that the jumper settings are correct for setting the drive as a slave. Otherwise things could go horribly wrong. Even if you think they're right, double check, the damn little things always seem to end up in the wrong place anyway ^_^

The jumpers are right, the disk is formatted and it now works. Thanks guys, case closed - I'm an idiot.

Never would have thought of this one ,...I've yet to have to format a drive to get it to work fresh out a box.  (Course I've always had Maxtor drives and used the provided disk to get everything set up....so that might automatically format them)

Good call thou ;)

It does, I headed over to Maxtors home site and downloaded MaxBlast3, it did everything for me and bang, problem solved (it was Kasperls prompting that made me think "hang on, I've got a backup drive that had software with it.. I wonder.."

never would have thought of it either... but then again, I only buy new hard drives to install OS's on, and that includes partitioning and formatting usually...

albeit a little late, I screwed up last thursday and lost all the partitions on a hard drive while playing around with novell netware... can't be saved now tho...
