Presenting the GTC Great Big Cube
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/images/BigCube.jpg)
Seriously though this isn`t an attempt to win the HLP modeling competition but a promotion for the latest page to my FAQ. A modding tutorial. The reason the ship is so ugly is that that is designed so that even the most ham-fisted of newbies can make it and then turret it and put it in the game (and hopefully remember how they did it once they improve).
Anyway the tutorial can be found here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/shipmods.html) and I`ll be adding it to the FAQ proper once I`ve got a little feedback.
Hopefully it should help some of the people who`ve been trying to turret ships recently.
Oh and Goober if you want the ship for Deus Ex II you`re welcome to it :D

Old joke.:blah:

Hey Karajorma; mind if I write a page? I was thinking of going over each of the data folders, talking about what kinds of files are in them, and how to modify them. A page with all the table parsings would be nice too.

 I'm not sure there's enough material for a second DEM - I crammed a lot of stuff in the first one. Still, thanks. :D

Sounds great :) I agree with all that but I`ve never had the time to do it myself so if you want to do it yourself that will help a lot.

Mines worse, It isn`t even textured so it looks seethrough in FS2 :) But in case you didn`t notice it isn`t just a joke. The point is to let newbies to modding build the damn thing and learn how to make turrets (which seems to be one of the hardest things for newbies to build)

Yea, I had to pass several tutorials before I finally learned how to do that.
And it's so damn simple, but the explenations are often wrong, or they suck. Making a tutorial based on a very simple model (so that newbs can learn about concave/convex faces, gluing, turreting and hierarchy) is the best idea on this forums as of late!
One thing that most tutorials fail to mention and that eventually screws all newbs is:
- whenever they mention gluing, they often forget to write WHAT KIND (child/sibling)
- when telling you how to attach turrets to the hull, they forget that you have to have the hull selected, then click glue, and then click the turret. And then to repeat the process for all turrets.
(This was driving me mad in the beginning)
- they forget to tell you that faces need to be concave (you should be able to get from each poit/edge to another following the lines)

That's the main reason why I said to use Trueview for everything. It's much simpler and you can instantly see if you`ve done it correctly. Unfortunately for other tutorials Truespace 2 was the best thing out for download until very recently so they had to explain how to use the glue controls which I hate to use.
Since Truespace 3.2 was released recently for free download I had the option of teaching people how to use Trueview and avoid all those horrible problems.
Actually I remember that the two of us went through the same hell trying to learn how to turret along with EdrickV and eventually after much trial and effort we managed to get things to work.
However since a whole new bunch of posts show that people are having difficulty I thought it was time I stepped up and spent some time to make sure that other people wouldn`t have such a big problem.

Turreting in TS was never dificult. People just often forgot to tell you all the rules. Once you know them, it's actually very easy.
-
To be honest I never learned :D As soon as I got TS4 I simply used Trueview. Rather than learn how to glue I simply drag and drop. It's far simpler :)

This cube is :shaking: very bad.

I pride myself on that fact :) That and the fact that it looks even worse in game :D And if you decide to get into modding you can follow my tutorial (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/shipmods.html) and make a ship that is equally ugly :)

Cruiser? Nah, make it a corvete
-
Or a destroyer...
-
the ****iest ship ever made is the hecate its a total waste of money and resources could have built 8 deimose's instead
-
The tutorial is really very, very good. I suggest anyone with a FS web site link it. Plus the low poly count of that ship means you could have lots of them in-game without a FPS hit.

aha! wonderful tutorial! The best part about it is the simple picture of how the heirarchy is supposed to be!
