Saw Freespace + Silent threat for $10 last week, so I nabbed them. Was addicted to Freespace enough that I finished it in 3 days, but I only did 3 missions of Silent Threat. They weren't fun missions on account of being too hard, and having dumb plots (I apologize to anyone here if they worked on those missions).
Too hard because you have to know beforehand which ships are going to jump out in the first mission or you'll never reach them in time, or because it when you blow the science ship in the second mission, all your CO says is "get clear", which really means "jump out", if you don't, you die. Terrible and frustrating design.
Dumb because, well I shouldn't even have to explain it. You don't go around blowing up your own important stations and cap ships (including a research vessel, for Christ's sake! Maybe they were close to figuring out a Shivan-killing uberweapon, you don't know) to cover up an event. Especially not in the middle of a desperate war for survival. And the third mission revolves around the science vessel's escape pods. I was 5 km away from the ship the first time around and the blast still killed me! How the hell is an escape pod supposed to survive that?
Anyway, I was wondering if it got better (it would have to be a lot better to convince me to keep slogging through it).

Silent Threat sux0red. It was buggy, badly written, buggy, had grevious play balancing issues, and was really, really buggy. More than one mission did I have to open up in FRED to debug myself :blah:
Good job it came bundled with my copy of FS. I'd have been mightily cross if I'd have paid money for it :sigh:

SILENT THREAT: REBORN
Coming soon to Freespace 2...
No, really. It is. Check the Port forum. There's a thread on it. Don't bother playing through the rest of ST, as it totally blows.

Simple answer. No. but, what GE said
FS2 is also better. Incidentally, that will arrive to you mid to late next week.. unless I spill anymore of that anthrax in there.. that was a real doosie last time round' :sigh:
-
The earlier missions are nothing compared to the really boring part though: the final mission. :p :D
Did Volition even make these missions? The quality is so far below that of the main FS1 and FS2 missions that I wouldn't be surprised if it was some third party...
-
Wait'll you get to the last mission. Be sure to keep some duct tape or a rubber band handy. :p
-
Silent Threat was a fan-made campaign. Back in those days, :V: talked with their loyal followers, and Silent Threat was basically uber-validated.
But don't miss the point - :V: approved ST. They must have liked it or something :shaking:
-
The ST main campaign was V's handiwork. If I remember, they locked one of their mission designers (Sandoop Shekar) in a dungeon cell with some actually very good ideas, and told him to make a campaign.
All the bonus standalone missions, however, were fan-made.

Freespace Port. We don't make things. We make them better.

Cool catch-line! Might want to use it for the port. :)

It definately had nothing to do with the fans. The only fan involvement was through the 40 someodd single missions available there (two of them are mine - don't remember which ones tho :D). I had fun with ST...it had some great ideas and it stylistically lead to the SOC missions in FS2 which are more like uber ST missions.

Could you put it as our little Forum summary thingy under the title link? :)

 It's a variant on the Fatmouse ("http://www.fatmouse.tk/") bit that was posted a few months ago. :)
"FATMOUSE MAKES EVERYTHING A LOT BETTER. HE DOESN'T MAKE THINGS. HE MAKES THEM BETTER."

I'm afraid to ask what the point of that website is... :nervous:

Hey, ST has its good points. It gave us the Hades (imagine that in a FS2 campaign with some decent beam cannons!) and the zeus bomber! That, and the original EMP missile.
-
Well that answers that. Good thing ST came with FS, or I would've been pissed :)
In that case, what are the best fan missions/campaigns for FS1?

Great, thanks again! You have no idea how grateful I am.
PS. If I find anthrax, I'll send you a package that ticks :D

Apparently my cd burner doesn't like listening to tupac..
lets try my dad's

If I was a CD burner forced to play that, I'd self-destruct, too.

Cardinal Spear and Awakenings are both really good. More at the VWatch archives.

Thanks. I haven't tried Cardinal Spear yet, but Awakenings is awesome! My only complaint (minor) is that it should have been broken up into 2 campaigns. I can't imagine anyone giving a damn about anything that came after the second Lucifer's destruction. It would be like having 30 more minutes of film after the destruction of the Death Star in Star Wars, people would walk out of the theatre.
-
Awakenings was good. It had an excellent plot and some decent voice acting (Admr. Porter got on my nerves though).
-
That one where the Vasudans try to take over that planet the GTA wanted to colonize was pretty good too. You get to blow up a ****load of Vasudan ships. :D

Destiny of Peace, I think it was. If I'm not mistaken, that should also be on the Silent Threat CD.

I even got a mission in there too ;)
ST's main campaign has a handful of good missions, but the rest are mediocre or substandard.

Hey... are .you the Adam 'Ace' Rorabaugh who created Cardinal Spear?

One and the same, that's our Acey. :D
-
Goody goody. :) Ace, would .you like to join the TVWP? We'd like to see how we could integrate Cardinal Spear into our storyline. :)
-
What a coincidence! Just got done playing Cardinal Spear. It rocked

Duh. :p What did you think I was talking about?
There was another decent one where you fly a Valkrie and protect a cargo group from a Cain-class cruiser. That was hard as hell since you only got the default loadout (ML-16/Avenger and the heatseaker...forgot what it was called. Damn its been ages since I've played FS1!)

The guy who played Dr. Lang was great; he was my favorite voice in the campaign. :D
Destiny of Peace, I think it was.
That was also very good and had a lot of original mission and plot ideas for its time.
-
I liked DOP alot. In fact, here's my list of favorite campaigns (dang, I'm a nerd):
- Derelict- Gotta love Duct tape! :D
- Awakenings- Yet another Lucifer killing
- Destiny of Peace- Mmm.... Conspiracies...
- The Regulus Campaign- Yet another gift from Peanuts, and it doesn't even include any mods.
-
Ok, I gotta post this... every time I get an email reply notification to this topic, I see the question "Does Silent Threat get better?", and the first thing that runs through my head is a resounding thud of a "No."
-
Ah, but you haven't played Silent Threat: Reborn yet. ;)

Well, there is truth in what you say. ;)

And he never will if we don't pick up the pace, gentlemen. :blah:
-
Hell, I'll help you pick up the pace by being a beta tester. :)
