Title: I need a confidence boost
Post by: diamondgeezer on March 31, 2003, 04:28:39 pm
Some of you might have noticed the S:AAB stuff I've been posting lately. The old S:AB TC thread I started a while back had me encouraged, but given the (at best) mixed responses I've had so far, I'm posting this poll. Hell, I'd make this thing even if I was the only one who was going to play it - I like splashing Chigs. But are you lot interested, or shall I stop bothering to post piccies around here?

Yay! S:AAB!

Never watched the show, so I voted  as I have no frame of reference, but mods are always good

The show looks intresting enough. It's a shame I don't have sci-fi. But if you can make the conversion and a nice campaign to show people what S:AAB is all about and use the proper name, turrets (find a different way to childishly-spite Zylon without ****ing the english language on purpose) then I'd gladly play it.

I would vote, but I no longer have the mental capacity to do anything beyond converting missions from FS1 to FS2.

I'd prolly wuv S:AAB, but  having never seen it, it's like cyberdating. You knever know how much the other person weighs.

S:AAB r0x0rs!!

Most of the stuff you've been posting looks good.  Don't let the uncultured heathen, who don't know the difference between Sgt. Bougus and Lt. Damphouse, tell you otherwise.

Incidentally, I'm guessing it was Razor_Blade who voted :ick

I'm really happy this is finally coming to pass, great work DG!

This is what go me interested in editing freespace in the first place. :D any luck putting together an ISSAPC? i searched and searched but couldn’t find a suitable mesh, and my modelling skills aren't that great.

I'm all for it :)
I wish you good luck ( but you should post more "appealing" ships, like the hammerhead or the chig fighter, you'd have more positive replies I believe ).

yay, S:AAB

I loved Space Above and Beyond.  That show was actually the reason I bought Freespace.  I used to watch that show and got the urge to want to play a space sim.  Wing Commander just didn't cut it for me (compared to FS, the graphics sucked).

I'm all for a S:AAB total conversion!  I remember the asteroid field battles (I think from the first few episodes) and always wondered why they never ran out of ammo...

If you are gonna make a conversion, make sure the ships can slide just like in the show.

Go Nipple Necks!

The ISSCV is currently a seperate unit, so the two have to be docked, but I'll prolly try and make a composite version as well.

[EDIT] Textures are dodgy due to modelview as much as me. In-game, they're at least aligned properly :D

 You got to love this guy, DG are we aware there is a Homeworld S:AAB total conversion, some collaboration with them might help we with textures and such.

They're at  http://www.tgu.org.uk/users/saab/saab/saabhome.htm

Of course they might not help at all but I dosen't hurt to ask I guess.

Hehe, in fact I have seen those before. Just this morning I was looking at at the destroyer and missile boat to see if they'd make good POFs. Unfortuantely, they were each in excess of 13'000 polys, almost ten times too detailed if I remember my POF rules correctly. Even deleting the stuff like radar dishes and antenae didn't help - just the basic hull sections are covered with greebles and stuff.

Anywho, I will need those two guys making at some point, so if anyone feels up to the challenge...

And thanks for the encouragement :D

at the lancer reactor, for the fighters at least, they have very cool ( real time, not your ubber high poly one :P ) models of all the fighters and alike, you should ask there :)

Title: 1/3rd of the way finished...
Post by: Star Dragon on April 03, 2003, 08:37:14 am
I've recorded a few mission briefs and some general battle comms BUT tell you the truth the pickings are slim. most of the time the background distorts the sound too much (keep in mind you need to remember whatever FS2 sounds might also be playing when they are used (like YOUR engine).... So although there is some stuff it is not as many vocals as I would have hoped for.. Plus they only made 24 episodes and I am missing like 5 of them...

Cool news I got some of Sgt Bogus's more endearing quotes like the Grab Ass speech and an awesome failed mission speech when he yells at Hawks "You're DEAD! The whole team is DEAD and it's YOUR fault!" ;7

Yeah I got Wang's interpretation of McQueen as a Plummer... Wonder how we'll work that in to the mission brief???

Post by: diamondgeezer on April 03, 2003, 11:53:55 am
Ah, but, it won't be McQueen giving the briefings. Look at this (http://www.angelfire.com/magic/diamondgeezer/loadhammer.gif) and try and understand why ;7

Textures need darkened, and a lot of work done on the shading though.  No turrets yet, not found any decent info on 'em.  Not got any info on the underside rear bit, either.

If you can wait till my Easter break (Monday after next), I can finish this proper.

I`ve had a thought about the hammerheads. You can`t really have the moving turrets on the player ship (unless you make the computer control it) but will you be doing it so that the computer controlled ships have their guns on turrets?

Oh. As per usual that's a thing of beauty Aldo.

I belive the intention was that... although, when I was looking for art, I found a few pictures that seemed to show guns mounted on the wings.  Need to make the turrets seperate (on my model) for polycount reasons, anyways.  If there's a SEXP in the source code (or summat) that allows turrets to be turned on / off alal beam-lock, could use that.

You can turn turrets on or off from FRED without any need for SCP just use the turret-lock SEXP :)

I was actually thinking along the lines of two seperate pofs. One with gunspoints and another with turrets. S:AAB is pretty ship poor so you`ve got tonnes of space on the ships table after all.

That said you could do it by having the computer controlled ships fire their turrets and giving them no primaries while having the player have primaries but locking the turret.

I was planning on just fixing the nose turret. Seems like the most sensible thing to do. Also, I made the spine turret solid rather than multi-part, as I figured no-one was really going to see the thing close enough to tell the diference

Note also the carrier I posted somewhere - it had 'HMS Illustrious' plastered down the side of it

If by down under, you're asking if he's Australian, I am going to find you and attack you with large, formerly pointy, if now somehat rusted, objects. Our Flag is different, or navy has a different name, We are no more an English colony than America is except in name and technicality.

Odd. Never before have I felt such an urge to end a post with a mindless, one word insult.

Wow I had read those like 2 years ago but forgot most of them.. Read them again, still horrible! Nope, I really can't see McQueen as anything other than a chig killing machine :p

Good thinking...I would have done the same myself.  I just don't have the time to commit to this project but let me say that I really want to play it when you've got it going and that I hope you can at the very least make a quality MOD with the best looking textures and the best balance between gameplay and visual detail from the show.

Babylon 5 is my thing and making MODs for either I think requies a very similar approach.

My hats off to you!  Good lucK!

Oh hell no, I can't do that. No-one volunteered to look after the models and textures, so here I am doing them myself and they look rubbish because the intersecting polys are flickering all over the placeand the maps are produced in MS Paint. Basically, the plan is to get most everything up and running so I've got stuff to work with, then once I have something I concrete I'll bribe a modeller and/or texturer to redo everything properly. We keep telling the n00bs to get some content before recruiting, right?

Thanks for the encouragement, though. Semper Fi :)
