The spammers ICQ is 203615088 - let's make his life hell. :mad2:
Anyone know of an auto-spamming ICQ program? :drevil:
-
Actually these things are coming from an auto-spammer.

There are about 5 million flooder/bomber programs for ICQ :drevil:

So could we not spam that number and jam their connection? That said, I suppose they'd just change their number.
Sarny, you do have spam protection enabled, right?

As in what, not accepting messages from people not on my contact list? Nope. I actually don't get all that much ICQ spam, to be honest. Maybe one a month. And I use Trillian, dunno what anti-spam stuff it has.
-
Then sorry to pick holes, but why are you complaining about spam if you 1) Don't have protection measures in place and 2)don't get much anyway
-
Just tick following options in your ICQ settings:
-Accept messages only from users on my contact list
-Do not accept multi-recipient messages from non-contacts
-Do not accept WWPager messages
-Do not accept EmailExpress messages
Setting names may vary depending on what ICQ version or Trillian you're using.
I have not received any spam-messages for a year or so.
If people who want to contact you are not in your contact list, they can simply request authorization to put you in their contact list. Simple, effective and spam-free.

Just figured we could give on of 'em a taste of their own medicine. :)
And Mr. Fury, thanks for the tips. I already have "Do not accept multi-recipient messages from non-contacts" checked. Don't know why the others weren't.

I haven't gotten a single spam message since I started using Miranda ICQ exclusively.
Still, the last time I got a spam message (which was over a year ago) the poor idiot got his ass handed to him. :D I'm not going into great detail on what I did, but lets just say that he had....internet issues for a while. ;)

You showed him that website with a naked picture of his mother on didn't you. You bastard.
:)

I am considering getting ICQ. Is it worth it? And where can I D/L it?

Ahh, so you saw the irony.
-
heh? ICQ is cool, I would be annoyed if I didn't have it...
-
What about ICQ on Trillian? I downloaded it, but haven't installed it.
-
There may be some ICQ spamming progies on Kazaa. You better make a search for them. He shall yet see how we wield the Hard Hammer of light. :drevil:
-
... in less than 48 hours, no less than three women (or people claiming to be) have started ICQ conversations with me - always when I'm away from my comp for some reason. Did I suddenly become both famous and attractive to the fairer sex over the weekend without noticing?

Its a slight bit harder to use but the gains I find are much more pleasing. Less crap, no ads, less unimportant features, low memory requirements not quite as rediculously easy to use but nearly.
And it can use MSN, AIM, Yahoo, and IRC all at the same time (theoretically!).
-
IceFire is correct. Trillian is little harder to get into, but once you know it inside out, it becomes a valuable tool for your all IM and IRC needs.
Standard (v0.74) and Pro (1.0 Pro) has different connection manager interfaces, if you're new to Trillian, choose wisely which one you want. Although Pro version is payware. But that hasn't stopped anyone before, has it? Pro of course has more features than the standard version, the usual.
-
A good portion of Pro's benefits come in the form of plugins, which can be downloaded from the site. The thing is, you need a username/password to access that area of the site - the username/password that you get when purchasing Pro. Quite smart of them, I must admit.
-
Who develops ICQ? I never thought about it till now.

a bunch of israelis, IIRC

It started out as a project by a company names Mirabilis, based right here in Israel. After it became uber-successful, AOL bought them out. It's still in AOL's hands, AFAIK.

yeah, i'm sure you're quite the hacker. :p
i'm sure that spam message you got was automated... in fact, i'm sure it was, but i'm sure they also don't allow themselves to receive messages

yeah, that was about the time that it became all crap. :p (huge difference between 99 and 2000b, mostly for the worse)

And so you should.

Miranda ICQ (http://miranda-icq.sourceforge.net) can do all of that, with the exception of the IRC bit...but thats what mIRC is for anyways. Even has support for Jabber. :) Plus, the memory footprint is MUCH smaller.
-
A relatively easy fix for the spammers is to just leave ICQ in invisible mode. Apparently the spambots just check to see if someone's got the "available" status, and if you aren't "available," it skips over you.
Of course, then it's kinda hard to discover if a buddy's online or not...
-
That, or use clients OTHER than ICQ (like Miranda ICQ). :) That, or just set it up so that only ppl on your list can talk to you....but that only works for a while. They even start sending you auth messages.
