Though the big explosion is bit too transparant IMO

The shaddow should blur a bit, but i'm not sure how to do that.

Latest, now with different beam and impact.

Version 1.03, 162kb

Don't you recognize the shadow of a Moloch? :p

Actually, I think the shadow is a bit out of place.  If the sun's that bright...and even then, the beam would put out enough light to overpower the sun shining on the Deimos, and there wouldn't be such a noticeable shadow footprint.

That and the flak burst looks a little weak IMHO.

EDIT:  err, some of us (i.e. myself) aren't registered at Warpstorm...

Rotate the turrets and blur the (shadow if you find out how) then it will be sweet :D :yes:

Turret rotate i can do - just tried it now - though it would be too much work to get it into the image again. I'll remember it in the future.
Flak flash has been updated.
I'm not sure how to blur the shaddow (in truespace) Does anyone know?

What do you think of the holes in the hull? The shivans shot out the weapons and engines. Clever things they are.

actually, no, it shouldn't, no atmosphere or anything, lightning in space is very sharp ( well, the sharpest you can get ).
anyway, as others said already: RTFT!!! yay!

nice otherwise :)

But mostly because nobody's posting anything else these days, and I like the concept. The transparency bothers me a bit, and the existing damage should be emphasized more- there's that one pitted section, and other than the explosions that's about it.

Maybe a hole through the very bottom bit, like a stray beam punched through it, with rebar inside and ****. THAT would make it look cool.

And shivans feeding off them?

Anyway Stryke, i could actaully model the damage.  Only just occured to me - object subtraction.  That way i can make a cylender for the beam, put it through the ship, subtract - and you have a huge hole through the ship.  I need to work out how to texture the surface of the hole though.

YES! RETITLE IT "LUNCH"!:D

Maybe something more jagged, though. A vert-edited cylinder, at least.

Eh, how did you get the battledamage on the side of the ship if you don't know how to texture that kinda stuff?

I drew it. Clever use of layers, delete, pasting textures, and a bit of work with the paint brush.

I think you're thinking of skinning, which is a horse of a different color. I can't skin for ****, either (or indeed at all, though I think I have a limited capacity to software-wise). Just copy the lower part of the Deimos, remove a smallish chunk from the original model, boolean the copied part and tex that normally- simple to do that sort of texturing. Er, so long as you have a decent prog.

Ok I think it looks real good....:) But if you get that close to a Capital ship you need to add BumpMapping and change the geo. to show some rounded curves.........Thats what I would do for a real good render....Keep working on it, LOOKING GOOD:D
PS maybe you should aim the gun turrets toward the your Target..........Keep it going.....

I've got a new project at the moment, doing some star wars ships from Ep II, modeling them myself.  I'm gonna do the scene from the start of the film where the Naboo Cruiser lands on Corusant.  Mmmm, reflective...

By the way, how did you make those explosions? Are they from FS2?

Post by: Razor on May 02, 2003, 05:17:02 am
OK. I made one DEMO explosion my self, but I don't know how to add it to my image. This is messing with layers but I don't know how to work with those.
Here it is:

So, can someone please tell me how to add this using layers? Please?

can'thelp you there, i use PSP.

if you know how to make layers and stuff, make a new layer with the explosion and the rest transparent, put your image on a layer behind the explosion, move everything in it's place, and then try to play with the transparency and blend modes.

Add that as a new layer to your image and play around with the layer blending options. IIRC, the one you're looking for will be screen or addition... been a while since I used PS, I stopped because it took my processor's resources and wouldn't let the other programs play :)

Ok but look here. I have a black background thereon that expl image. How do I make it transprent instead? is that possible?

select a "magic wand" tool, a thing that seletcs everything of one color, selct th black, and press "delete", and hope PS gives you transperancy.

The layer merging options do just that. Addition, for example, adds the value of each pixel on that layer to the layers below it. Since black has an RGB value of (0,0,0), the black pixels have no effect on their background - that is to say, they are transparent. Try it.

Or do it my way, place the explosion on top of what you want it to appear on and set its layer property from "normal" to "screen". Works every time :)

OK, thanks to Thunder's help, I mannaged to put this custom made explosion on this render, and so here it is. I named the render Payback. ;) What do you think?

Now THAT is cool.

One small thing - the Deimos is almost obscured by the beam glow. It grabs your eye and it's difficult to see past it to the ship itself. Put some lights on the hull itself, to brighten it up a bit and make it easier to see. Either that or spin it round the beam by 180 degrees, so it's facing the other way.

Looks smegging brilliant, though!!

I very much like the first image, damage effects are always tough to do properly (i'd personally use a combination of displacement maps and volume shaders to get explosions/damage)
