where is the tbl files in the fs2 folder. I need to find them for a mod i'm testing. i searched through every folder in the freespace 2 folder too
-
/data/tables
..? That what you're looking for?
-
i looked in there and its blank i guess they may be hidden but i don't know how to un hide them if thats the case

Oh blimey. OK, you see the big VP archives in your main FS2 directory? Those have all the models, maps, missions and tables and stuff. You need a copy of VPView (check the HLP downloads). Use it to open the Root VP, and click Tables on the left-hand menu. You should be able to guess which tables do what from their names. To edit them, you need to extract them to data\tables - use Wordpad or something similar for editing, but be mindful of the limits (ships and weapons must be less than 380KB, with less than 130 entries in your ships table. Other tables have the limits explained within them)
Now, you need to appreciate the way the game searches for files. First, it will check for non-archive files in the data\whatever folders. Then it checks the data folder, then the main FS2 directory. After that, it checks for the file in the VP archives, After that, it lloks for the files on the CD, and then in the archives on the CD. Thus, files in your root FS2 folder will overwrite those in the data folder, etc.

Does it even run? If not you may have forgotten to download the DLL file pack that you need or the font that it uses.
BTW if you only need the ships.tbl I do have a copy available for download in the FAQ.

No no no, if he's going to mod he should learn how to do this stuff the old fashioned way
-
I agree with you there (in fact it says something along those lines right above the place to download the file from) but I`d hate to see someone give up cause VPView doesn`t actually work.
-
You know where I originally got the ships tbl from?
That Orion Mark II minimod! You know that black textured one! I'd never even heard of VP-Viewer.
I remember getting very angry when I started fredding becuase all the folders in the data directory were empty. I felt cheated!

Follow the instructions at the D.Net website where you got the program and you'll be fine. A bit of reading, a bit of instruction following...no big deal :)
Its as user friendly or more so than Windows is! :)

actually i got vp view from the hlp website
-
You might try simply redownloading. I remember helping someone or other last year who has having similar trouble, and it turned out his download was fubar.

The DLL pack is also on HLP. It's at the bottom of the list of FS1/2 tools on the download page.
