Sums up pretty well the problems of our modern "culture"

That might have made sense if I could figure out what in the world his main point was; he just ranted incoherently about any random topic and the piece as whole did not hold together at all. :wtf:

Bah, it's too long to bother reading.

You'd have to live in the real world to really know what he was getting at, which (no offense) you don't,
-
dont worry about killzig hes a little on the mental side.
He makes some good points that are relevent to the fallout community which you guys probably wouldnt get. The kiddie pool is a real "hardcore DAC forumites" only kinda thing.
-
Scanned it. Great. Incoherent rambling, mostly, but I was diggin' on pretty much every word he had to say. Thought I was the only Yippie left.
Granted, though, this is posed in a Fallout board (well, pretty much. The distinction's vague, since it's a PA themed board and the only post-apocalyptic fiction this generation of braindead l33t kiddies knows about is Fallout), which detracts from the coolness somewhat.
This part struck me best, if only because it's a sentiment so rare. If only more people started saying this, maybe something would change once in a while:
Very good questions and all but you're not the only **** ****ers in the world. These pansy anti-globalization protesters aren't much better. You cover your faces so the reporters won't photograph you? You ashamed of your beliefs? Weaklings. Scared of the gas? Breathe it in and get acclimated else you'll always be cowering at the site of it. Be reckless, put your forehead to the baton, be a martyr. Show them that if you'll do this to yourself you'll do even worse to them. What have the G7 got to fear now? Cardboard cut outs of Lenin and Marx on wood sticks? Ooh, scary!! I think you should leave that **** back in mommy's minivan before the ghost of Lenin comes out to kick your scrawny ass himself.

Love the equal opertunity disgust.
I thouroghly enjoy a good ***** rant every now and agian and really feel this 'I consume, therefore I am' type attitude is far to dominate in our culture. Just figured ther might be some like minds over here who would apperciate it.
Fallout is a real good game and if you like open ender RPGs you should pick it up in a bargin bin or something.

No...it seemed pretty coherent to me. A rant....and one that I do not agree with at all but I do give the guy credit for being coherent and at least having a point to make.
Just because we aren't a bunch of fanatical lunatics (i'm a moderated lunatic thank you!) running around chopping peoples heads off and being bold of every minute of every day doesn't mean thats a bad thing (skulls in the stree is not what I'd call making architecture more interesting).
Infact, he's highlighted some of the "better" things that we do. No, we haven't got the tolerance thing down properly...but at least there's a bit of air of caution before running rampant over someone elses culture because it isn't ours.
Suggesting that we go beyond extreme is ludicrous. A balanced, considered, and reasoned approach is more preferable than jumping over the cliff first and asking if it were a good idea later.
Sorry, not like minded at all. But once again, I give credit where credit is due. This was definately something well written as well as ranted.
-
Actually, judging from the crap on TV nowadays, going beyond extreme is the new way to conform.
Up for a nice hot cup of centipedes, anyone? How about sleeping with a whore on public TV? The VDs are free, and so's your divorce.
-
I think that we could use at least a few fanatical lunitics. I mean, where's our guy who'll run into an Arabic marketplace and blow himself up? Not that I support such nosence, but our culture (as a whole) doesn't provoke real emotion anymore, just repackaged hollywood garbage that is afraid to offend anyone in even the most minor way. No one I've met, outside of some of the folks I talk to in the military, are really willing make any sacrifice for the greater good anymore.
Is it just me or is Prime time network T.V. completly unwatchable presently?:(

I actually might have agreed with him on quite a few points if I could understand what he was trying to say. First he talks about Athenian democracy while changing the subject to reading books after every other sentence. Then he goes to the problems of commercialism, but he gives a single example without stating any implications or analyzing the problem. :wtf: The next three paragraphs then have nothing to do with capitalism at all (although I agree with his "softening of culture," if that is what he is trying to say), following a paragraph comprising of some questions that just seemed randomly dropped in there. The next one was about conforming to standards I suppose and was one of the better paragraphs. Then we have four more strange paragraphs, this time so random that I couldn't find any unifying theme in them at all (he wants to pick a fight with someone he knows he would lose to? :wtf: ). He ends it with a restatement of the original rant, which would have been fine if the body of the essay actually had anything to do with it. Also, the whole thing was so filled with thick sarcasm that it was difficult to tell which position he was taking in certain places; that's the way to write a bad essay, even if the ideas are good. Putting in curses every couple of sentences isn't helping in people taking him seriously either. I could have probably done a better job at a rant. :p
-
Basically, he's complaining about how dull we are because we Merkins don't have a culture of our own. Everything in the country made for the larger body of he people has to appeal somewhat to an almost impossibly wide range of people without upsetting anyone, hence, everything is impersonal and monochrome. And people who think they stand for something are generally poseurs, because (this is inferred more than stated), they can't possibly have any real convictions or meaning to their lives when raised in such a soulless environment.
-
so, um, what is the proposed solution to this that will still work correctly? also, what is a "soulless" environment?

Actually, this only addresses the symptoms of what is wrong with late modern/postmodern Western culture. When an entire culture is built on a watered-down nihilism, such social ills as commercialism, apathy, medocrity, etc., arise merely as epiphenomena.
Hemingway didn't kill himself because Western culture sucked: Hemingway killed himself because his life was meaningless in his own eyes. He killed himself because he saw clearly what the implications of his beliefs were. Most people in our culture don't see clearly the implications of those self-same beliefs to which they also hold, and so instead of outright killing themselves in a flash, they kill themselves slowly, steeped in poison and not knowing the difference.

Man...its ALWAYS been unwatchable. I have serious issues with most prime time television shows for being dull, annoying, far too trendy with not enough substance, an outright copy of another networks show, an outright copy of the same networks show with a different timeslot, etc.
Half the reason why I watch sci-fi shows almost exclusively is because the intelligence factor at least goes up. Shows like StarGate SG-1 and FarScape (and Babylon 5) challenge you to think. I can't say the same about the rest of prime time.

Hes not trying to be historicaly correct hes just insanly ranting..... this just happens to be a more meaningful one then normal!
-
Incidentially, take a gander at this (http://slate.msn.com/id/2081469/) tit. Sure, looting's not a real problem, and in the end they'll resove their differences and it'll all be okay!
Funny, I never saw this guy in any ghetto riots, when the entire ****ing city practically gets burned down, and any commerce in the area is ended pretty much for good.

That guy needs a kick in his addled dick brain. What the hell does he think they're doing, just running around getting into little brawls and looting old government buildings? The parts I heard of it they were pulling people out of cars, shooting them and then driving off in the cars.
-
I think it's one of those things where he wants to get a sound bite in the news for being "clever"- as in raping the English language in order to express one's malformed opinion. Sure, Saddam was "looting" the country, and they're only doing it on a smaller scale, so it's all right!
For one thing, what this guy's babbling about was nationalizing industries and levying high taxes. It's precisely the same thing every other government in the world does, only in this case we don't like them.
-
Funny the ways we're all alike...
No matter where you are, what your skin color, or political views, everyone seems to love a good loot. There's just something about a defenceless store front that seems to scream "Smash Me!" to some reptilian part of the collective human psyche.
-
Yay!
Well, what did you think crowbars and bricks were really invented before. Oh, I'm sure they're very useful for prying stuff and, uh, building stuff, but subconsciously, the creators knew... "you know, this would be great for smash-and-grabs!"
-
Wow never thought of that. Bricks truely are amazing. You could build a house or knock out a riot cop depending on your mood.

Or both if you're feeling particularly energetic.
