A few weeks back, my drive suddenly decides that it's not going to read DVDs any more. It was quite sudden; it was working fine in the morning but by the evening it had just stopped reading them for no apparent reason.
I would of thought that it might have stopped working all together, however it still reads CDs without any apparent problem.
I've checked the properties and it reports the drive as working properly. Just wondering if anyone here knows anything about this or has heard of similar cases.

Very funny thing. I have the exact same DVD rom. Eh..myne is black. By the way, do you perhaps have a DELL machine? Ok back to buisness. First what you might try is system restore. Maybe you have accidentely messed something up without knowing it. Don\t worry it can happen to anyone. You of course need Win XP to use System Restore.
Go to Start then to All programs, Accesories, System tools and activate SR. Select the checkpoint, a few days before would be most recommended. Do what it is asked of you and try reading your DVDs again AFTER you prperly restarted your PC. If that doesn't work, send it to the dealer, shop where you bought it and explain your problem. If the CD is dammaged and you have a waranty on it, they should replace it for you or at least repair it.

Does the SR wipe everything on my hard drive also? Mine's not a DELL. It's a piece of rubbish from PC World for reasons I'll probably ask for help with some other time, lol.

System restore isn't XP only, to be honest it sounds a lot like the DVD might be knackered, pretty much the same thing as what's happened to mine.

Stay assured that no harm should come to your files. It is called System Restore because it is supposed to put everything back like it was before. It is like a time machine. If you make a mistake, you use SR to undo your mistake. If you ask me that's the most perfect tool in Win XP. Consult Win XP Help if you have anything else unclear.
By the way, I used SR a few times vefore and i didn\t loose a singe file on my HDD.

Maybe it is. It shouldn't be yet though; I've only had it since last November.

Thanks, Razor. I'll try that.

No problem man. Always glad to help out. :)

GoBack is a far superior program to system restore, unfortunately it's incompatible with XP :(

Hmmm...i don't realy like SR, say i make a SR point on 16/4/2003
and my PC go's weird on the 25/4/2003 then everything between 16/4/2003 and 25/4/2003 installed or downloaded is gone, as you didn't have that installed at that time. It's only handy if you make a SR point just before you are going to mess with your settings that could fubar it. But even then i don't like it.

Well, part of the point of SR is to protect you when you DL programs or file that FUBAR up your PC.......
