Title: Glowpoint contest submissions.
Post by: Petrarch of the VBB on April 17, 2003, 02:36:13 pm
It has been decided ('twixt myself and karajorma, leastways) that in this contest you can choose any ship you want, and glowpoint it! The winner shall be the person who wins, and they shall win... the contest!

If there is a tie-breaker, then it will move on to general improvment of ships.

Maeglamor shall be the judge, whether he likes it or not.

Get your entries posted! They shall be accepted as pofs only, screenshots will not do!

Lead balloon. Never mind, I thought it was a good idea.

Just no telling with some people, is there? I thought this would spark off great things, perhaps get more work done, SCP wise.

But, alas, the miserable buggers have chosen to ignore it.

put his up in modding as well, that might help you get some replies.

also, perhaps you should think of some extra award for those who win, dunno what.

perhaps, or even better, an pimp in FS2 Open, like, " is the winner of the glowpoint contest, look at his work here:" followed by a little techroom thingy. now i think of it,someone should make a part of the mainhall linking to a
"credits" section for this kinda stuff.

Yes.

Now does anyone have an entry, or am I going to have to hang myself in the barn?

I tried making a shippy wit glow points yesterday, but they dont like to show up.

first, i added them to a Mara, i added the glow points to the one thruster it already has, and it crashed both FRED and FS2, so then i added a new thruster, and gave it glow points, and they dont show up.  Then I tried what I did the first time, and there was no crashing or CTD's involved, but there was still no glowpoints.  what be i doin wrong?

oooh, look at all the smilies! :)  :p    :mad2:  :sigh:  :shaking:  :blah:  :ha:

Wrong kind of glows anyway but the sound of it. We're talking glowpoints (as in only with FS2_open and either a recent copy of PCS or Aurora) and not engine glows (as in the bit the glows on the standard FS2 caps).

As for making normal ships with glows - I`ll give it a try later today or tomorrow.

Now now don't be so hasty.  Maybe some people are still working on thier ships to turn in.  You should leave this open a while longer.  In my opinion this is a great contest.

IDEA:

Maybe you can drum some more people to do this if the winner of the contest gets to have his/her ship in the next major SCP FS2 release (3.6?) and his/her credits in the game/project?  It might make people feel like they can be more involved in the SCP who otherwise can't (maybe they can't code).

Yes.  We definitely could use the finals for FS2_OPEN 3.6.

I retract this statment. I got it to work somewhat (I'm stuck with win98) so as soon as I can learn how to do glowmapping I'll try.

So can we get a decision by the SCP people if they can let the winner have his ships in SCP 3.6 and their credits?

C'mon guys... I always see you guys talkin about texturing this and that and modelling this or that so there's gotta be someone out there who has an itch to work on glows!!!

Why not try it yourself? Glows are pretty easy. I picked up how to do it in about five minutes. Of course it takes longer to do them properly but I did have manage to make a version of my carrier which had blinking runway lights in about 30 mins the first time I tried it.

Unfortunately I`ve been busy and haven`t had a chance to try anything for this contest yet but I`ll give it a go and see what I come up with.

Thought I'd have a go with glowpoints...  My testbed was the Arcadia, and because of the spotty effect the lights on that station already have with glowmaps, I didn't go overboard with the lights.  Look around its edges, as well as around the hole and fighterbay for the glows.  Looks best in combination with the glowmap effects.

Damn! Musta missed this. Sorry, Petrarch! :)

I'd give it a go, but I don't know how the hell to make one of these. If someone can show me how, or point me to a decent tutorial, I'll give it a go. Can't let StratComm just walk away with this without a fight, can I? :D

Speaking of which, did anyone ever even look at my model?  I actually thought it was quite an improvement.

And Pyro, the best way to learn is to play.  That's what this contest is meant to inspire is people learning the tools and getting the advantages into the game.  Open a relatively simple model (a fighter is good) and just have at it.

But for advise, the best way to do it I've found is to open Modelview and a recent version of PCS with the same model loaded.  Use the gunpoint editor to get the coordinates (create one gunpoint and just move it around; the crosshairs give you a good sense of location), and then enter them in PCS.  Just keep in mind, deleting glows can be extremely annoying, so make sure you don't create extras.  And don't save from modelview.

Why do you think you've missed it?  If you have an idea for the contest, it wouldn't hurt to work on it anyway.  It wouldn't hurt...

ive done some stuff, but nothing too fancy. unfortunately i cant put up any pics, my webspace provider doesnt like me link to my files from here. im still having some problems with aurora, every time i try to fix something, it screws up something else. for example when i reloaded a model i previously tweaked with aroura, gunpoints, subsystems, and missile glows seem to disapear. also pofdvew shows some anomalies in the file structure, is this normal? i like the interface though, i hope its still a work in progress, so it can become as good as pcs is.

wow, I've been gone for almost a month and this thread hasn't changed since I left.  I thought that this was a really good idea, and if I had more time to spare I might continue to do them (gets an idea :drevil: ).  If anyone else remembers that this contest is here, use PCS; Aurora may be more user friendly on the input side, it isn't stable enough yet to be actually used.

The Arcadia looked pretty good :)

I think the main problem here is that the SCP is growing so fast that us modders are struggling to keep up, we just create our latest ship with Glowmaps, and then Bobboau pulled shine-maps out the hat, and then Hi-Poly models and then rotating turrets, not to mention adding the glowpoints and in the space of about 6 months, most peoples' mods don't use half the new features available :(
This isn't knocking the work of the SCP team, I'm GLAD they are adding all these features, but I think I need some time to catch up with them all! I will get round to adding Glowpoints to some of my ships, but it's just a question of finding time whilst upgrading everything else.
