Any campaigns (or prominent individuals in the community who want forwarded to their *Freespace related* site) that want a sub-domain, or for example:
*whatever*.hardlightproductions.com/
this will forward to whatever URL you want.
Go ahead, ask:
-
I'm frightened. You can't just be buying domain names and offering free webspace out of the goodness of your heart. What's in it for you?
-
the goodness of the community.
helping and offering services to the community is what's in it for me.
by the way, since when did i offer free webspace
-
Stealth, check PMs.
-
Stealth, you are frighteningly generous.;)
-
Guys he's offering a forward address, all it really does is allow ppl to type in "blah.hardlightproductions.com" and it directs them to what is really "blah.****ty-geocites-like-host.com" ;)
the site they actually access will still be your original webserver and everything.
Not that's it's not cool for him to offer, just wanted to help clear it up since some think he's giving out webspace lol
-
But surelt he's still having to register domain names.
-
Not always. Some hosts allow you to set up alias and forward accounts. Pretty much the same as an email address forward. But only Stealthy here and answer that one ;)

The "subdomains" are free. Due to the way URLs are parsed, jamming stuff in front of the actual domain name gets treated as additional local address information, just like the stuff after the slash.
AT&T Worldnet supports this. For example, the normal URL to Freespace Rawhide is--
http://home.att.net/~clay.h/fs2/rawhide.htm
But using the "vanity URL" feature, I can also write it as--
http://clay.h.home.att.net/fs2/rawhide.htm

i'm not doing anything at the moment, because i don't have the admins' decisions on this, i'm just taking names at the moment... for example, if inferno wants inferno.hardlightproductions.com
i'm just seeing the demand for this at the moment, and i'll present the list i get here to Shrike and the admins, and see what they think... so i'm not making any promises
EDIT: Zylon's right, i don't pay for each individual sub-domain. here's how sub-domains work:
You have the main domain, for example, in this case: hardlightproductions(.com).
You can then add things to the front, such as:
www
or
mail
or
FTP
, so when you type in "mail.hardlightproductions.com", it's substituting "mail" for "www"... it's hard to explain... i could make :
www3.hardlightproductions.com
you understand? damn this is hard to explain ;)
-
i should've made it more clear from the start that i'm just getting information, and you should have a CAMPAIGN that's currently hosted on HLP to get a subdomain.
for example:
inferno.hardlightproductions.com (i.e. campaigns)
can apply, but:
Knight_Templar.hardlightproductions.com (i.e. individuals)
can not.
just seeing who wants it and who doesn't

an0n's guide to IP's and domains[/u][/i]
Every computer across the world is identified by way of an IP block. There is a regulatory body (I forget who it is) which dishes out IP blocks to whoever can afford them.
So some hosting place may buy the entire IP block for 215.89. Then whenever someone tries to access a computer with an IP starting with 215.89, they will be directed to whoever bought the domain block where they will be presented with some form of nameserver (I forget the proper name for the IP ones so I'll refer to them as nameservers) and the following happens:
215.89: Hello, I serve everything under 215.89. What IP do you want?
YourComp: I want 215.89.123.46
215.89: Ah, okay, I know where that is. Gimme a minute. *sends you to 215.89.123 nameserver*
215.89.123:[/u] So you want 215.89.123.46, eh? Just a second..... *sends you to a specific computer*
215.89.123.46: 403, Forbidden. *closes connection*
So you get the registered server for the first block of numbers, which sends you to the server for the second, which sends you to the third and finally the the fourth which is usually a standard computer. So as you add numbers to the end, you narrow down the number of computers until you end up with a single one. However, domains work the other way round.
I think it's Verisign that owns all the top level domain (.com, .net, .org) and say you wanted ftp.3dap.com, the following would happen:
.com: What do you want?
YourComp:[/u] I want ftp.3dap.com. Know where I can find it?
.com: 3dap, eh? Sure. Gimme a second. *directs you to the registered nameserver for 3dap.com*
3dap.com: You're the guys wanting ftp.3dap.com, right? *sends you to the appropriate computer for ftp.3dap.com*
Now, if ftp.3dap.com was running a nameserver, then you could have money.ftp.3dap.com. So every time you wanted to create a tree of addresses under you, you would add them to the beginning of the name.
-
you did a better job explaining it than me ;)

Honestly.. i'm actually feeling threatened for the first time in my life. Do you have some sick obsession or fetish about me?
-
Who doesn't? ;7;)
-
Actually Stealth is giving webspace, but only to those people who need it for high rendered pics and models, i beleive. I sent him upload scripts to do it.

I never actually understood IPs and domains before that. Thanks.
And I must say, Stealth, it's excellent of you to offer this sort of service. Never seen this sort of thing anywhere else before.

remember the ICQ message about a day ago? i said i'd compile a list and you could choose which people (campaigns) you wanted to have a subdomain and which you didn't.
-
i know this isn't a camp, but what about, minimod.hardlightproductions.com, and forward it to http:\\vakwerk.df2u.com\hlpminimod\
it might be easier, and altough not a camp, the minimod dbase is still part of the community's efforts, right?

Especially since I thought HLP was suppossed to host downloads ;)

HLP does host downloads...and it links to them:
http://download.hardlightproductions.com
http://downloads.hardlightproductions.com
OK, i'll take that into account kasperl, i'll ask Shrike about that.
anyone else?
-
Don't forget to collect all these new subdomain links together. There are so many of them, it's getting kinda confusing. :o
-
oh don't worry, i have a list of all of them.
all the ones requested in this thread (actually i think there's only kasperl's "minimod database" request) aren't in action at the moment (i have to get Shrike and the admins' permissions first)
However, there are certain reserved ones... off the top of my head, a couple of them (though there are dozens) are:
forums.hardlightproductions.com
forum.hardlightproductions.com
art.hardlightproductions.com
artgallery.hardlightproductions.com
artgalleries.hardlightproductions.com
gallery.hardlightproductions.com
freespace.hardlightproductions.com
hosted.hardlightproductions.com
renders.hardlightproductions.com
community.hardlightproductions.com (can't remember if i actually did this one or not)
staff.hardlightproductions.com
downloads.hardlightproductions.com
etc. etc. etc.
all links off the HLP main page will have a sub-domain, as per Sandwich's request ;)

Oh, lordy - no need to go overboard here, dude. If we had hlp.com I could understand, but it's not like hardlightproductions.com just types easily.

I agree, I think that's a little excessive... :nervous:
-
well why not... it's not like anyone needs them for anything else
-
I'd rather go to www.3dap.com/hlp and click twice than have to type in sourcecodeprojectforum.hardlightproductions.com

i'm sure most people would, but if you're a fast typer and you want to go to the hard light forum, i find it really easy to type:
hardlightforum.hardlightproductions.com
and go straight to the forum instead of having to load the main page, click FORUMS, click HARD LIGHT
i can type that in at least 5 times faster
-
while it would be cool, i doubt we'll ever get www.hlp.com
-
well, then what about www.hlp.net or www.hlp.org or www.hlp.hlp or www.hlp.whothehellgivesadamnaslongasitsshorterthanhardlightproduction.
At least let it have a point.
-
yeah, well i made this thread not to discuss what the sub-domains of this site would be, but if any campaign would like one.
apparently they don't *shrugs*, oh well!
-
Well being I'm sure most of us don't even TYPE to get here (click favorites POOF here) I don't think it makes a ton of difference.
Now where it might make a difference is if the pointer domain names will show up on searches and such,... then it might attract some new ppl.

yeah, i personally just use "History" to get to websites i frequent (for example, Volitionwatch, HLP, Flashkit, etc.)... the only time i type in URLs are for ebay, yahoo, google, etc.
i don't know if it'd make much of a difference in search engines... perhaps, but remember the pages are the same, the domains just forward to those pages, and their "META --> KEYWORDS" are still the same.
only time will tell :D

I know that's kinna what I'm saying ... that for the most point we could have 1500 Blah.hardlightproductions.com forwards and for the most part ,.. aside from reading this thread perhaps,...most of the community here wouldn't notice
-
I've been promising it for a long time, and here it is.
100 MB
24 hour FTP access
Dedicated user login and password
your own root directory
etc.
anyone who would like to be hosted, let me know
it's 100% FREE
-
thought this might have renewed interest
-
Me. Maybe. It depends how well this compressor works in the next week or so, I might be moving 30mb videos or 3...
-
I'm getting a bit bored of Angelfire... whats the finer details?
-
Finer details? There's no finer details... you get 100 MB for whatever you like, 24 hour FTP access, fast uploads and downloads, etc. i've been promising to do this for awhile now, so i thought it's finally time :)
-
The threads have been merged. Crisis over. Go about your lives, citizens.

ok, questions:
1) for who is it? just people with camps or also people who need a good host for something else?
2) does it offer PHP and that kinda stuff?
3) where do i sign (if it's not only for camps)
-
i said i'm not doing this anymore because i'm sick of the unappreciation of some people in the community.
if you're interested, Email me or something
