Title: Holy smoke, EVE looks+sounds sweet!
Post by: J.F.K. on April 19, 2003, 05:35:33 am
I was just perusing the EVE website. THey've got so much content! :eek2: I wonder how they find the time to do all that - especially considering games like FL, which has a tiny amount of universe compared to EVE (and FL's already released!). God, I can't wait to play this game. And what's better, it'll probably work on my computer (P3-550, GF4MX440) and my internet connection (56k). All you people on the beta've gotta tell me everything you know about this thing; you probably can't play as the Jovians, can you? :)

Indeed...it is a very good looking game.  Biggest turn off is the pay to play subscriber model.  I'm old fashioned yes...but those things bother me.  I pay money for the game once and I expect to be able to play it for years to come.

That aside...it does look very good, very superb graphics (influenced my BWO nebula designs), and I hear its quite good gameplay wise too.

I doubt that its got quite as much content universe wise as FL does...at least right now, but they have some advantages in that many of the outer worlds will no doubt be populated by player corporations which will autotonmously create their own content.  The other point is that they can expand their universe as needed and are not limited.

So yeah...is cool game, probably won't get into it...but do enjoy :)

I so can't wait to play the game that I play it already MWAHAHAHA :D

Icefire, i really can't say about FL coz I've played only the demo, but just in terms of available gear, I bet EVE is much more proficient.
I didn't count the weapons, various ammos available, upgrade packs for ammo absed weapons, crystals fdor the lasers, the countless goods ( heh, I've seen frozen dead bodies lol ).
ships are very numerous ( they show only a few on the website ), in all the solar systems I've crossed ( about 30, tho most of them I just jumped through to get somewhere else ), the backgrounds were just jaw dropping. I've visited a LOT of space stations, and I only found two that looked alike ( tho they didn't have the same colour ). my favourite ( the Zoohen station ) is that mix between an oil platform and a cathedral, with the jets of fire and stuff, the thing looks made only with hundreds of griders and steal beams.
the universe is just friggin huge.I've only visited a fraction of it, and I don't plan on visiting everything, damn, the area I'm in now dwarfs the whole Iwar2 available space!
gameplay is cool, but don't expect dogfights or anything, it's medium/long range battles. hence the fact the smallest ships available are frigates. You can get combat drones, but I haven't tried them. I have ( well I just lost them stupidely :p ) mining drones, so I imagine the combat drones works somehow like automatic little fighters ( they're probably crap tho ).
I think there's no need to tell how gorgeous the game is, but I should emphasize on some jawdropping effects like the reflections on the glass bays of the Gallente stations, or the particle effets that are made to look realistic ( you gotta see the flame plumes of the Station in Zoohen, you have big chimenys that releases flame plumes from times to times, the flames are curly, they twist and bend it looks the same as in real life ( never been in a chemicals complex? :p ).
To sum up, I've played it for only 3 days now, but I'm completly addicted. Eve killed my desire to get freelancer in less than a night playing it.
It might be the first time I want to pay that monthly fee, a system that I hate more than Icefire does I can bet :p ( I'm greedy :D )

Actually I probably will not be buying it for that reason alone. :p I absolutely detest pay-to-play; if I already paid for a game, I should be able to play it indefinitely, no matter how good the game is.

It 's a good game, but it won't be for everyone.  One major problem, Eve's  combat system makes freelancer look like freespace 2.

I had alot of fun playing it, but i don't think i'll pay to play any game, unless it's the Ultimate Game(freespace combat, fps mode for inside ships, stations and planets, plus rpg elements)

well, you can't expect them to run the servers for free. if they do, you can't expect the game to run more than 3 months before they go bankrupt.

Either let me play the game I paid for without monthly charges or give the game away free and charge me every month. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $100 to play a game for 5 months.

I tend to lean towards anti-pay-to-play too, but I like space sims enough to have at least a one-month look at this thing... would be a shame to have never tried it, I think. ;)

There are definitely game companies that do not have this p2p thing but have no trouble running multiplayer servers. They are after all getting money from people purchasing the game the first time.

Actually, it might even be worth considering if the periodic pricing was much lower, but the fees are usually around $10 or $15 a month, which for a single game is absurd for me; that is about how much a dial-up internet connection costs.

That's right; in fact, every game I can think of which isn't MMO but has a multiplayer element offers its servers for free. Then again, MMO's would naturally have a lot more traffic on their servers... or would they? Some of the popular games have enormous and active multiplayer communities (Battle.net?), which are free. That said, I'd be willing to pay substantially more upfront if they knocked off the p2p.

you can't compare battle.net, owned by blizzard owned by vivendi, and a server owned by a company macking their first game! let's be serious :doubt:
plus you don't know the prices yet, so why are you already complaining?
plus I think the game is worth 13$ a month anyway. it's cheaper than a red faction that I played for two days.
anyway you do what you wat, I really don't give a damn :p
Title: Holy smoke, EVE looks+sounds sweet!
Post by: LAM3O on April 20, 2003, 12:02:44 pm
I think 13 a month is a little high.  Maybe they should have prices depending on how long you play, for people that aren't looking to play the game all day everyday.

Yes this game needs dev run servers as all MM games do, there's simply no way for p2p here.

I think the most shocking thing you'll see at first is the size of the universe,  however big you're imagining it, it's bigger.  They are all barren now so i think the developers are really going to let the people shape those 5000+ systems.

the game looks great, but is WAY too boring. It's like a mining sim instead of a space-combat game (I'm a beta tester, too ;))
Anyways, if you want to really spend some good money, get IWar2, that's the game I'm playing now.

er... you remembering the initial $50 to actually buy the game? $50 for hte first month(game comes with free month{hardly :p}), and $13/month afterwords...

really expensive imo, more htan its worth.. especially when you have try to make a corp and... blah i won't go there :p

Why don't you go kill something then? Join a corp, go loot...

BTW: I wouldn't mind the monthly so much if the game was a free download....

easier said than done about the looting part: you only start with 0 ISKs (an ISK is basically a dollar, for those who don't know)

incorrect, you start with enough veldspar to refine.. and get money. however, you'll still need to mine to get the money for some weapons to start killin pirates ;)

At the start It's all about finding a system with omber, few or no pirates, a station, and no other people to suck the omber dry.  It took me forever to raise that 64k for the Navitas ship.

If you are new to the beta you might be able to find some kind souls with tons of cash, and since they are deleting all the accounts when the beta ends, many people with millions of isk are willing to part with some.

Oh, and DC, novbody here knows how much either the game nor the monthly fee will be about, right? so what are you babling about? Anyway, it's the same for all the MMORPG, so live with it. the ones who're waiting for galaxy, you do know that it will be the same "buy the game then pay a monthly fee" system, right?
The only exeption to that rule I know is Project Entropia, so...

edit:
ok, i know the prices. they were to be expected anyway, it's about 50$ the game and 13$ the monthly fee ( gorget about the few less "psychological" cents you can remove from those prices ).

I'll point you to the "I refuse to pay $10-$35 a month to play an online game. What do you say to that?" part :p

*UT uses his magical storytelling of doom (TM) ability to craft a three-page long story on how he didn't die, and rises from the grave*

*pulls axe out of head, and proceeds to steal all the axe's out of Tiara's weapons closet while she's hitting on Gortef ;7 *

Anyways, the game is quite boring at first, and doesn't show any signs of getting better the higher you get. It's one of those "life simulation" games, so if you didn't like The Sims, you probably won't like this, because it's missing all of the querqy (sp?) humor of that game. At least for me.

And am I the only one who thinks that posting on the Beta forums is well-nigh useless?

get out of the lvl1 security levels, and we'll see if it's a "life sim". hell, have you seen a single pirate? you're like that guy who thought zelda sucked and was boring coz he didn't left the village at the begining

Venom, I find this quite ironic. Just before I got you in beta( :p ), you were saying that the fee was rediculosly high and all that other bs... and now you're saying that its perfectly reasonable? Obviously you have no consistency :p

And stop telling me I don't know how much the game costs, I've done extensive research on the game far before I got into the beta...

And btw, just to let you know, you're rediculing me for what you were saying not that long ago... I hope you realize that.

Ah, you're pretty boring, I said price was pretty reasonable for what's involved, i never said that fort exemple I'd pay for it. i say facts, I don't say what I think. coz what I think is of no use for other people. I never said the fee was ridiculously high or anything anyway, stop imagining things.
plus you gotta say that last sentence again, coz I don't understand it :doubt:
oh, and ****. I was posting herre to talk about the game itself, and it ends up being about money. I don't give a damn if you pay or not for it: I won't most likely, not because it's **** or anything, but because I'm alraedy set on WoW. that's it.

No kidding, my opinion is that a game like this is for people who have very little of a social life. I mean, who is it kidding? It aims to be immersive and realistic except where realism is boring; all this it succeeds in AFAIK, but I think I'll stick with good ole RL.
