Title: Terran Installations
Post by: Black Wolf on September 10, 2001, 05:00:00 am
Does anyone know of any smallish terran installations that have been released? Something smaller than an arcadia, that would suit as a pirate base (not the boadecia (sp))?

I think so.... try VWatch or (if it's now ready) the HLP Mods database.

I'm working on a small priate station, but it won't be ready for a while yet, anyway.

There's that awesome Vasudan one, the Cheops. It's sort of like the boadiciea in that it's built upon a big asteroid, but waaaay better looking IMHO. It's 1.8x2.0x0.9 meters, though... :-/

EDIT: Hmmm... Installation: check. Terran: nope. Smallish: nope. Well, one out of three ain't that bad, is it?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Snipes made a MOD of the Cheops called the GTI Scylla...

not to mention, a pirate base can be a makeshift thing. Remember Wayfarer Station from Derelict? That was Deimos + Faustus + Ganimede.. why not put 2 or 3 cruisers together, disable their engines, and call it a station? You wouldnt necessarily have to dock them. Just make it look as if they're connected. A TAC1 or a subsystemless Mjolnir would be great for a connector module.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

That's...a very good idea. I believe also if you stick them so they're touching in FRED, they stay fused in game.

If that's true (sticking together) you may want to experiment with a simple mod, creating each ship as a seperate piece of it.  Which you could change flags and experiment on.

Seriously though, got any pics? I've seen some of your other models and they are pretty nice.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Sorry, I haven't been able to get onto the internet since my cable went down almost 3 weeks ago  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif)  I'll make it available for download once I get back online(at work right now  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) )  The modelling and texturing are finished, but most of the .pof work still needs to be done.

Hope this helps.

Any news (read links  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif))on this front? I've since found Robin Varley's GTI Archeron, but others would still be appreciated.

Ship-Sticking works well. Unless sumthing bumps them, then you can have the wierdest things happen. You also occasionaly get the Hull damage Plumes shooting out if its done wrong.

If Corvettes were  Lego 3 Deimos and Two Iceni's make the meanest ship. Shame no ones modeled it and changed it a little.

so you want a Arcadia stile (chunky) terran instalation about the size of a large corvette. does it need a fighter bay and how well armed do you want it.

how's this ("http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/TI.zip")

Well, fighterbay yes, as it's supposed to be a pirate base, and they need somewhere to launch from, and reasonably well armed, as it is a criminal installation.

As for that model, it's definitely interesting. Pulls away from the Arcadia style 'box' installation, basically a block in space.

Are all those prongs designed to be runways? Or docking bays?

there suposed to be turret towers,
on the end of each (most) there'll be a beam turret,
I planed it to be an old mining rig that was captured and retrofitted for pirating purposes,
so there were mining beams on the ends of them wich have been modified to give them greater FOV and power.

Great station bobboau  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Any chance to see it completed (lods, debris, path,...)?

That is precisely the sort of thing I was looking for  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif). Any chance of a timeframe?

Well it's definitely got a spot in Tema Al Diablo.

BTW, can it rotate on it's Y axis? The shape and positioning of it's beams would suggest that it can, and if they have high recharge times, a rotating station would make sense (so that charged beams could be pointing at a single enemy all the time).

mmh, but I think the result would be terrible if you want a ship to dock with it in mission...
