Title: Little FRED2 help, please?
Post by: diamondgeezer on November 17, 2001, 02:59:00 pm
OK, I'm not getting very far with this on the VBB, so I'm posting here (feel I can justify it since this is actually FS2 related, for once  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif))

Hokay, first, I'm having the player fly in Skull Delta wing, in the number two position. Now, FS2 doesn't mind this too much except that if you're not in Alpha, Beta or Gamma, it resets your fighter to the default (ie. Ulysees) and being SOC, I need the Erinyes.

I've tried changing the default ship in the ships.tbl to 'Erinyes', but all that did was remover the Uly form thetech room list and made me fly a Herc in the mission. So I shuffled the ship entries around in the tbl, but now I'm flying a Uly again. Since I really have very little idea about tbl hacking, I'm stuck  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/confused.gif)

Second question regard scroing from objectives. I checked a couple of FS2 missions and a couple of Derelict missions, but none of them seemd to give scores for completeing objectives. I'm wondering if this is normal, or I just happened to pick the four missions that don't give scores... if people generally do give out scores for meeting goals, what sort of scores should I give in terms of balanceed gameplay?

Right, I think that's all of it...

Spank you for your time

Geezer.

Diamondgeezer, you could try making the wing be alpha, but re-naming each ship as "skull delta 1", "skull delta 2" etc... The other thing you could do is open the mission up with a text editor, and change the wing name to skull delta.

A response! Yay! Thanks, Analzon.

Well... changing the individual ship names would still make Alpha appear in the comms menu/hotkey screen, etc. I'll take the text editor for a whirl and see what that does.

But if only I could make the default ship show up as an Erinyes instead of an Ulysees, everything would be fine. So far, I managed to make it default to a Herc, and for the other Erinyes to show up as 'DIASBLED' (despite the fact that they were still flying aroung, blowing up asteroids (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/confused.gif) ), but further fiddling returned the default to Ulysees and lost the Herc entirely.

*Thinks* Actually, when the AI fighters that were supposed to be Hercs appeared, they were Erinyes... so I sort of did make it default to Erinyes - but only the AIs, not the player ship (still the Uly). There's a bit at the bottom of the ships tbl which is something to do with defaulting, and the order of precednce for default ships or something, but putting Erinyes at the top of that didn't seem to achieve anything  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif)

Still waiting (im)pateintly for help,

Geezer - last of the Brunnen-G

Freespace 1+2 are pretty insistant on using Alpha 1 for the player's ship, regardless of the whims of us modders  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I'm afraid you'll simply have to bite the bullet and use the greek lettering system for squads.

Perhaps you could blow up a ship with sexps when the objective is completed? Far from the battle area, of course.

Not quite. You can be any member in alpha, beta, gamma or delta (I think)

What you do is this -

1 Build your mission with alpha, beta etc. wings.

2 Go into the mission specs and change the mission to multiplayer

3 Swap the player ship from Alpha one to whatever ship you wanted (In the multiplayer accepted wing names), making sure you have turned 'Player Ship' off on Alpha One

4 Switch the mission back to single player in mission specs.

Tada! FRED2 will complain, but the mission will run fine. Loadout screens, onscreen wing designations etc will all work, and you will be Beta 3 (or whatever).

Doesn't help you all that much diamondgeezer, but if you're willing to give up that 'skull' part, you should be able to do it.

That's just in multiplayer (coop).  For single player the player's ship must be Alpha 1.  For team play they must be Alpha (for team one) and Zeta (for team two).

OK, I've sussed it now   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/cool.gif)

Using the multiplayer/single player 'cheat' thing, you can fly stress-free in Alpha, Beta or Gamma in single player. Being a difficult geezer tho, I insisted on flying in Delta.

I have now managed to make it accept me as Delta 2, and it now even defaults to the Erinyes 9thanks to some persistent tbl hacking), though being Delta wing it won't let me change my ship, let alone the others in the wing   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Still, I'm happy. Thanks for all the input, guys - I now know better than to ask for FRED help on the VBB   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)

New question:

When my dudes send messages, the ani of the pilot's face only appears for a few fractions of a second. Everyting is doing it, fighters, Argos and even the few messages I have sent from #Special Source. Very frustrating   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/confused.gif). Any thoughts?

Geezer

[EDIT]Wow, harsh language filter in this place... I mean I don't even consider ******  to be proper swearing... never mind.

Check the ani you are using, some of them only play for that long, and I think it is more "realistic" if it is just voice, and not ani. I can't check any of this out right now, I am on a school computer.

Does this happen in all missions, or just yours? If it's happening all the time, a reinstall might be neccessary. (saving that .tbl file of course)

I think that the ANI problem you mentioned comes up when the accompanying sound file is too short. The game seems to stop showing the ANIs if either the ANI or the WAV file ends. If you are simply using some sort of beeps for sounds (like I do), you can drop in some silence after the beep noise to fix this problem.

Before I try it myself, i don't suppose anyone has a good 'static' noise for radio chatter?  At the mo i'm using emptymsg.wav, which is neat but short...

As it happens, I am using some little beep wavs for the messages... interesting...

Aldo mate, what I did was take the emptymsh.wav and cut the four individual beeps up. Rearanging the bits gives me a few different beeps which sound simmilar enough to link them together as comming from the same wing (but still sounding different). The other thing was to use the EMP static effect from the VPs... if you fiddle around with the legnth and arrangement of this with Goldwave, you can get some interesting results...
