That's it? Too bad it wasn't that popular when it came out...

Bloody hell... Makes me consider burning my discs onto copies then reboxing the originals and selling on, with the case... I've got the exact same version as is selling there :shaking:

I seriously doubt that bid is going to be honored.

There's more than one person bidding up there... It would just get sold to the next person. Probably for only slightly less.

I have actually seen a lot of cases on ebay where FS2 has sold for over $100; it is apparently in very high demand. (of course, Interplay is too stupid to notice that :p)

:)   I've thrown away the box, lost the instruction manual, and scratched the CDs.  I wonder if the people bidding on this realize they could just download it...

Freespace 2 is not in "very high demand"... not at all... not by a long shot...

While there may be one or two auctions for the actual box with all contents in Mint condition where everyone's bidding away, there's other auctions... like this bastard, who's selling copies:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3020308520&category=41067

you can take any game that's rare, and people will bid on it ;)

I bought FS2 one year ago in a local shop with cheap books, CD and CDROMs. For 99 CZK.  It's approximately 4 USD. It's quite a good shop. There you can buy some old computer games for very reasonable prices. Don't think of illegal copies. It's fully legal. There are only unsold items from other shops.
It has Spanish manual. It was my first randezvous with Freespace 2.

Its not actual copies of  the game that are being sold

This auction is for information on obtaining a copy of "FREESPACE 2" for much less than what you have to pay for a used one.

For 2.99 you get an email telling you where you can download it from :D

I'm sorry, I love FS and all but anyone who pays over $100 for it needs carting off to the funny farm ASAP.:doubt:

FreeSpace 2 may not be popular...but Interplay is idiots for not packaging it up in a whitebox format and selling them.  If they were able to pull their heads out of the sand, they'd see that the community is still alive despite their attempts to destroy the franchise.  Pack the game up with itself or in some bargin bin pack and start selling it again.  Descent-FreeSpace you can still order online...why not FS2...

Yah well, I am one of the poor blokes looking to buy FS2... :(  It seems the going prices are all $25 plus, and these guys do not understand that gamers have no patience - when we want a game, we want it now!!!

Anyone have a shop nearby that has a copy?

Speaking of the download version, I have it and it works, but since there is not install procedure does it put the appropriate entries into your registry?  I have looked and did not see anything (was going to try Open FS and OPen GL).  I also do not like the stuff missing...  I have found the "extra" files hosted by Mr. Fury (thx Mr. Fury) but that is not everything yet.

Also, is there any truth to the "you may distribute copies to your friends" phrasing in the license agreement (per the Freespace Oracle FAQ)???  If so, I am sure I have many friends here, even though I am new!!!! :D (no, I do not condone pirating, but if that is true about the license agreement...if not, do not even offer).  Also, is it really that big of a deal any more if they have even released the source code?  Note, I do not want to start flames about piracy, just have a discussion.

Welcome to HLP Steel.

I`m not certain about the registry entries installed by the HotU version but you should have a whole bunch in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Volition\Freespace2

As for finding a copy hang around a while join one of the modding teams and then you`ll probably have no trouble getting someone to send you a copy seeing as how there can`t be any doubt that a fellow team member could be a friend :)

yup, it's there. That's how Stryke got  Underdogs to upload it. She doesn't like warez.

Thx.  I looked and only have a PXO and version key in the Freespace2 registry entry.  Maybe a registry export file could be produced to add the missing ones in?

I am actually already interested in helping...  I started this journey (if you will) by jonesing for a Space Combat game...  It has been years since I played X-Wing and Wing Commander...(I have the Wing Commander 3 disks even).  I was looking at XWA, but it seems that although XWA might be easier to mod, I believe Freespace 2 has much more potential and capability especially with the source code release...  The big thing that brought me here (FS2) was seeing the FS2/Star Wars project.  Then I find the source code was released, Babylon 5 project (I know nothing about Babylon5, BTW), the Wing Commnder project, etc.  I especially love Star Wars...but I wonder if things like shields, etc. can be modeled properly (I'll ask them...) after seeing the thread on beam weapons piercing shields.

I am just not sure what I can do!  Not a modeler, etc. and definitely not a coder (although I have been known to write a few shell scripts - but let's not have that get around!).  I am not adverse to learning, and since I am a systems engineer I have a lot of talent in working with and managing complex systems...

I also, with a partner, run the RLGaming.com site.  We also own and operate PHPWebservices.com, which gives me the capability to promote gaming as should be done!  I host a lot of downloads for folks, especially things that are becoming obscure.  We host one of the last Close Combat mod repositories on the planet.  I could probably easily be talked into hosting the files (all of them) missing from the Hotu install, or even the original cd images...  I need to do a bit of work before though to organize servers/services (new server just online).

Well as far as I know you only really need to add the registry hacks for better quailty textures. The rest shouldn`t be needed unless something stops working.

I`ve never really heard much about modding XWA so I don`t know how hard it is but FS2 is fairly easy to mod. Seeing as how you`ve already found my FAQ I don`t need to direct you to it but I put a lot of advice in how to get started in the modding and FREDding sections.
Personally I`d try playing about with FRED if I were you. Have a look at the walkthrough from the help menu and actually do it. It's very good and if you do it rather than just reading it you`ll probably learn almost every thing you need to know to start writing your own missions (of course MASTERing FRED takes much longer but the basics are pretty much there in the walkthrough). I found FRED pretty easy to learn and I`m sure someone who is used to thinking logically for work would have no trouble with it. My only other piece of advice about FRED is don`t get carried away and decide to do an entire campaign after only having done a couple of missions. I did and two years later I`m still working on it :) If you enjoy FREDding keep an eye out for a week or two and you`ll see people begging for FREDders. :D

As for hosting a copy of the CD's I don`t think anyone cares really now. HotU has had there version up for ages and no one has complained. A good download for FS2 would help bring even more new members into the community than even the HotU upload did.

After you feel pretty good about FRED...start playing with the ships and weapons tables.  Produce your own ship specs and weapons can be alot of fun if you like that sort of thing :D

Thx guys...FRED it is.

Now being that I have a high end machine, how about those registry keys for better textures?  Do I just create the necessary ones instead of changing (I believe they are in the FAQ?) them?

But before I waste much time, what version of Open FS should be used?  It seems that 3.5 and 3.5.1 had bugs, and the latest unofficial release has a lot of merged stuff unmerged...  How long before a new, proper, everything in it release?  Any idea?

I will start with the basic FRED that comes with the game though...

Yeah you can just create the needed registry keys. In fact that's exactly how the guide written by steak suggests doing it :)

Actually, Interplay HAS published FS1 & 2 as a whitebox, both inside the very same package! I got mine from a local store for about 20USD just a couple of months ago.

The whitebox was published by "the white label" of Virgin Interactive, so I suggest to check out if they have done this in the US also. Unless of course they are Virgin/Interplay guys selling the boxes on eBay... :D

Thx.  Everything on e-bay is going for $35+.  Unheard of!  I have seen only one white label set on e-bay, I think it is still up for grabs but at a silly price.  I take it you are in Europe???  Can you tell me the chain you bought it at?  Maybe they have an online store?

this is crazy, but i know people might get desparate, since i tried about antyhing here, i thought i could get the white label, butno, it's "out of stock" at the importer, and since i don't have any creditcard, and i don't thrust other internet payment methods, i'm ****ed.
