Title: How to turn back time in FS2?
Post by: outlier on April 24, 2003, 04:07:31 pm
Hi everyone,

In FS2, after getting the Aquitane out of the Nebula (Argonautica mission), I managed to miss the second loop in the story. For some incomprehensible reason I exited the game without making the choice between the loop and the main story. Now when I go back, I get transferred back to the flagship and the main story, without a choice to enter the loop. Stupid from me, I know, stupid, stupid, stupid...

Is there a way to edit the pilot history to make it forget about the Argonautica mission or at least my screwup? Caught up in the story, my pilot backup dates more than a few missions back.

Any help is appreciated... thanks!

Well I was going to tell you to edit the campaign file but then I figured it would be much simpler to do it myself.

Download (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/FreeSpace2a.zip), unzip and place in the Freespace2\data\missions folder.

I`m pretty sure I built the campaign file correctly but I didn`t test it so you might want to back up your pilot.

Go to the campaigns room from the main screen and choose Freespace2a from the list. It will ask you if you want to start a new campaign and loose all progress in the old one. Ignore that.

when you go to the ready room you`ll find yourself in loop 2 mission 1.

Acquire Target : outlier. Commence Plasma Core Insertion. Beam-Free-All. FIRE!

Welcome to HLP. There are exits to the left and rear. Do not attempt to use them. Under your seat you will find empty beer cans, cookie crumbs, dog eared dungeon Porn mags left by Shrike... oh, and a Flamethrower. Unfortunately, we're out of napalm, so you'll have to bludgeon people to death with them.

In the event of serious conflict, there are plasma rifles in the forward locker, though these can only be opened by an Admin, [V], God, or Hyperintelligent shade of the colour Blue. If, for whatever reason, you find yourself crawling around in the ductwork, there's a better than average chance you'll encounter a Shivan. They're easy to spot with the five legs and all. If you're lucky, it's just Carl, who responds well to food rewards. If not, then at least you die quickly. Be aware that the entrance to the main control room is guarded by subspatial claymore mines.

The admins havent stopped playing wih things since April Fools, so, expect the unexpected, which is really the expected because your expecting it.

Have a nice day.

Kara, I think hes looking for a way to get those missions into his file, without having to restart FS2 after he left off, bcause IIRC, it will make you restart the campaign.

At least im not the only one who thought the loop option was at th beginning of a mission... :doubt:

A little early for it, but I figure just to cut it out now.

Anyway, kara answers you once again.

On a related note is there some particular mission outcome in "Love the Treason..." which will make the campaign skip over "...but Hate the Traitor"? That happened to me the last time I played through the campaign. Pity. That mission has always been my favorite. I just have a thing for moral decisions in games.

Thanks kara, this is more than enough! I just wanted to get to fly the loop2 missions, without having to restart the campaign to get there. Had a quick test run and the edited campaign file seems to work OK. Off to save the mankind again. Lesson learned, although just one question remains: how to get rid of teethmarks on a Microsoft Precision 2? :D

No problem. For future reference what I did was extract the FS2 campaign file with VPView, open it up in FRED's campaign editor and delete the ships above the mission that had been skipped.
Then all I had to do was add the ships and weapons allowed in the campaign editors loadout options and you`re done :)
As you can see that lets outlier play the loop missions and then go back into the main campaign. The only problem with doing this is remembering which weapons and ships are allowed by that point in the campaign :D

Actually, if you rename the files from blah.JPG to blah.TXT they come through quite nicely.
