Title: pushing perfection too far?
Post by: CptWhite on November 24, 2001, 10:07:00 am
probably not worth the hassle but its been done now anyway   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

a new nial for the babylon project (model and textures)

lod0 is slightly less effcient (uses 190x70 extra map)

but lod1 has 70 less poly lod2 about 150 less poly and so the overall performance of the model is much increased

anyway here are the comparison pics   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

in good time, all in good time, models are in development, quite a few in fact

the best thing about the next release though will be new ideas that push the engine some more, thats all the tema is allowed to say though

although the fs2 modders will lap them up  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

strange, overhall the model is more rounded, exepted the 3 "tubes" between the hull and the wings, which looks like they have an angle now, and they didn't on the old one.

venom the "tubes" are now mapped correctly - they arent on the original - thats just a good shot of it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

i used many uv windows to texture more accurately, you can view the new model from any angle and you wont see texture mis-alignment - its all over the place on the old model  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

as for the silouette yes the old version was more rounded, and its a critisism i threw at the model myself  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) so point taken (not my model btw im just a texturer.

old textures by haderak btw, and its a decent attempt , its a very tricky model.

the more I look at them, the more I prefer the old one in fact: there's even a break on the map on the main body. In fact, the only better part are the things at the tiips of the wings and the air intakes of the tubes on the hull/wing junction.

ya, all you needed to do was maybe sharpen the textures a little on mine,
why did you think it was so necessary as to spend your valuable time remaking a nearly perfect model.

Especially when you don't see them for long in the game  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
