Title: GVSc Haoeris... Can someone make my dream a reality?
Post by: Starks on May 01, 2003, 04:45:04 pm
I was wondering if someone could make a Vasudan Science Vessel for me. I am making a FRED2 Mission and need a Vasudan counterpart for the GTSc Faustus.

I would deeply appreciate it if someone did me this favor.

Uh, you're best bet is to get to be friends with one of the modelers here or mooch a ship off another project, but let people have some time to respond. An hour isn't enough when you have an international community.

The two Vasudan science cruisers that currently exist are the GVSC Neith, for Inferno, and the GVSC Imhotep for Atankharzim. Neither is publicly avaliable right now.

However, I've had an idea for a Vasudan science cruiser running through my head for a while now, using parts of the Setekh concepts. I'll be making it public and giving it to the TVWP. Can't say when it might be done.

For now, you could use the Anuket gas miner. The tech description says it's used as a mobile laboratory, so it's feasable if you want a short-term fix.

Get out of here... My concept was a modified Setekh that I originally thought up back in 2001.

-No Radar Dish
-Zeptyrus style engine
-Rotating zero g gravity pod (Think "Mission to Mars")
-ISS style module addons
-GVC Mentu/GVFr Bes texture

For the mission I need to know how to change the PVFr Ma'at and PVFr Bast to GTVA IFF.

If you mean changing them so that you always see GVFr instead of PVFr it's quite simple. Just use the alt name box in FRED2's ship editor to change them.

If you don't want to do that for every ship you could edit the table to change the name. Have a look my FAQ and you should find some help.

Due to some... circumstances involving my roommate, I'll be able to do some modeling as far as that goes, instead of working on FSURP. Ah well. Look for a few concept models here soon.

Why is the Ma'at listed as PVFr? Didn't the Parliamentary Vasudan Navy become Galactic Vasudan Alliance?

prolly because it's outdated, so it didn't really get carried over to the new government. Like the Anubis.

BTW, I made a spelling mistake. It's GVSc Haroeris, not Haoeris.

Please don't post this around.  One thing that I learned when I came to this community is that you don't ask others to model for you.  Learn how to do it yourself.  There are plenty tools/tutorials around for you to work with.  Learn how to model.  People just don't seem to respect others who are inept to model and ask others to do it for them.  If you have a good idea, try to draw a concept and do it from scratch.  Or like what Knight Templar said, "Swipe something from another campaign or make friends with people here."

Ok.  Enough criticism.  Let the newbie breathe.  Living Large, if you can stop playing The Sims and draw us a concept, maybe we can make your dream come true.  Also, learn how to model.  It is CRUCIAL to survival at HLP!

Need I also know how to code and implement it into FRED2?

Also, what is good program for first time modellers?

Yes.  You do need the code to integrate your model into Freespace 2, which can be simply learned via looking at some samples.

Since Freespace 2 MODding cannot escape trueSpace, it would be a good idea to learn trueSpace first.

Also, you need the the Descent Manager series for Freespace 2.

These software can be found by doing a search on a search engine.

Well I wouldn't go as far as Rampage. You don't NEED to know how to model to be on this board but it's a good idea.

Basically you've got two options.

1) Do a deal with a modeller. You write a mission or two for them and they make a model for you. If you have good FRED skills there are campaigns that need help. You may be able to do a deal. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for an oportunity. Most of us who can model are busy already and have little time to make models for others (especially if we have to come up with the design ourselves).

2) Learn to model yourself. Have a look in my FAQ (link is in my sig). Check the modding section. I've got links to several other modding tutorials and my own on how to make turrets. I've also got links to a free copy of TrueSpace 3.2. You'll need to use TS at some point to do the hierarchy for the model anyway so you may wish to just stick to TS.
If you don't like TS there are other choices. Blender and Wings are free. Milkshape is cheap. but anything with which you can get a working model into TS is suitable.

You know, LivingLarge, it might be better for you to hook up with a larger campaign. So many people start off their own little ones, and few of these ever seem to ever see the light of day. I'm sure there are several teams which could use good mission makers, artists, sound guys, and so on. You will probably learn more about moding that way rather than going it alone - I certainly have from my experience with Inferno. :)

Sid.

Another crucial survival tip for HLP - Don;t believe everything you hear. :doubt: Probably half the members of HLP currently don;t know how to mod. I've been here since August 2001 and I only learned to mod a few months ago, and I'm still not very good at it. Anybody who likes FS (or even FL now) can 'survive' HLP.

And those who can FRED are even more in demand than those who can model right now - you may want to keep that in mind.

Where would I find the .cob files? Never mind...

How do I change from .pof to .cob? I need to edit a model so I can make the Haroeris.

I tried a few pof2cob programs and they don't work properly. I can't convert any textures.

The Textures need to go in your FS2 data folder(best to put them in the data\maps folder)  but as .pcx files rather than the .bmp's or whatever you're using in Truespace. They must also be in 8 bit format  (i.e 256 colour) rather than 16 or 24 bit.

FS2 doesn't care about the original extensions so if you're using a texture called texture1.bmp in Truespace FS2 will look for texture1.pcx

I like sarcasm! ;7

Anyway, MODding is important in moving up the Freespace 2 heirarchy (sp?) at HLP.  Generally modeling is a good skill to have.
