Title: Failure to create device?!!
Post by: Hellbender on May 06, 2003, 07:44:02 am
Is there a fix for this?
I was unable to find anything in the other posts so far.  I get that error whenever I try to open any version of FS open newer than 3.5.1.  I have tried every release I could download from the fsscp site and no luck.  I've also tried every video mode.  Nothing lets them run on my system.

Any suggestions folks?

System specs:

800 P3
1gig ram
WinXP Pro
GF4200Ti

Thanks!

:wtf: opengl shouldn't interfere with any d3d stuff

hellbender: install dx8.1b or dx9

Thanks, but I already am running dx9.  Also tried several video card drivers.  Same thing.  Doesn't matter what mode (OGL, D3d, etc) I try it on.

I just ran into this problem. When i tell the Launcher it should use d3d 8 it changes the registry value 'D3D8_Mode"=dword:00000000' to '162' dezimal wich results in 'failed to create device'.

When i change that back and tell the launcher to use d3d_5 it will run fine again.

Is there any docu / info on what this and the other d3d_8 keys do?

Yeah, it seems to be related to the launcher in some way.  Possibly cause the launcher doesn't using the regular FS2 keys and conflicts arise.

Ok, so I made the registry change - worked, and can run the later editions in d3d 5 or 8, however now the glow maps no longer work - unless I use 3.5.1...have I goofed up somehow?

Bugzilla.  Glowmaps were one of the features that were inadvertently dropped.
