Looks to me like it's done in Paint. Not really 3d. The lighting should be fixed and the textures as well. Use something from FS.

it requres major reworking of the textures (removal of detail and makeing everything solid colors) and for some reason I can't seem to get the outline to work very well on decompiled FS ships, wich sucks :doubt:

and the lighting and non-3dnes is sort of the point, it's cell shadeing it's suposed to look like a drawing or cartoon

best single source for TS plugins (http://tokyo.cool.ne.jp/cgf/tsx_e.html)

for cell shadeing go here (http://tokyo.cool.ne.jp/cgf/zip/as102a.zip)
for the outline go here (http://tokyo.cool.ne.jp/cgf/zip/toonedge.zip)
(that's the 5.x version, though I think it will work in 3 and up)

note I didn't apply the outline to the turrets yet

quick and crappy animation (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/heckanimetest.avi)
(I was testing a starfeild generator, It didn't like being minimized aparently)

if anyone is planing on playing with this for FS renders you'll need to alter the textures of what ever you are rendering to make them more sutable for cell shadeing here are two examples I hade to do for the Heckate

it's actualy a lot more work than it looks like

Do a Sathanas, or cel-shade render the Deimos/Rhakshasa duel.

you cell-shaded the golgotha?.....

NICE:nod:

i'm guessing the lack of engine glow was an oversight yes?
Title: can truespace do cell shadeing?
Post by: Bobboau on May 25, 2003, 11:15:29 pm
yes, a slight oversight,
I was thinking of doing a bit of an animation played to chop suey with an all out fight between the Golgotha fleet and some SOL forces (though I would not be able to publish it until BWO was done) focusing on two fighters as the animation progresses, I had started on one but it had been takeing too long to render but now I think I might be able to do it

that reminds me...

*goes to look at BWO forums*

The Hecate always reminded me of the Concordia (WC2) and when cel-shaded it really looks like a WC2 ship :p

I just found what is i my opinion a much better cell shader (http://tsx.uvworx.com/), it's the uvtoon one, it's got a lot more controle and I think looks better and it has a built in outline that doesn't look like crap.

ok, look at this (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/toongirl.zip)
I set it up quick so the animation isn't very smooth, and there is a bit of a bug in the under arm aria that I should fix, but it should give you some idea about what that shader is capable of (btw that whole thing rendered out in about 25 min on a p3 450, and check out the bad compression of my codec)

actually, those cell shaded models... i like em.

can it be done?
a cel shaded mod?

it would be a neat thing, and it gives it that "over the top" look :)
