It worked! Sweet! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

what, did you give it an invisable texture?

yup.
Merely a start to an idea.
Now....if only we can figure out a way to give a ship TWO fully working Shield meshes,..make the outer mesh textured this way. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
That way as it's depleted the "cloak" is lessened.
Source code or doable without recoding?

What could also work is a special explosion .ani which is black, and a fighter weapon with a short lifespan, no damage, and explodes at the end of it's life. (i.e. that means when you press the trigger, the black explosion surrounds your ship)
I played with it in FS1, but never did much with it.
Also, with the sourcecode, you could have a second shield layer which the code for shield glow appearance is actually reversed where when you fire the shield texture in that area disappears.
That would give the effect of the cloaked ship slightly decloaking in the region hit.

Hey warlock... if that one makes the ship dissapear and re-apear, please send it to me because I need one for a boss fighter that you fight at the end in my campaign.

Either your server is down or those are well-cloaked pictures. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

lol
I can't see 'em either

(http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) i really wanted to "see" the cloaked ships.

ummm ppl...look at the DATE of this thing (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

ok, funny idea, make black texture, put it on a mesh around the model, and make it a destroyable subsystem, then when it got destroyed, the ship would be de-cloaked. You could use the 'do-not-show-up-on-sensors' tag in the tbls or in the mission. I thinks that would work, and I would do it if I knew how to make destroyable subsystems (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Actually the concept was based of FS2's use of green textures as transparent. This way Stars show through the model instead of a big black shape (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Hmmm... however some people said that with Voodoo cards that the green texture will show up as green which sucks. However, I was thinking that someone could do this through coding if you want an AI controlled ship to do it. You could tell the ship to warp out... and then warp back in after about 15 or so seconds, but in a different position. However, I don't know how to get it done myself.

can't you shoot through invisible? or is that specifically the texture named 'Invisible'? I had a coolish idea, and that could be used to create ice asteroids (i.e. titan ae), is to use 0,255,0 and pixel-apart grid of an ice-blue color, and that would keep some solid lookingness, that could still be seen through...
I think it could work

you can shoot through it if you set it to be shoot throughable in the tables.

that wouldn't work because of the texture smoothing.
-
no I think it would, but I may not understand what we was saying.

like transparent bitmaps in old games, for exemple a shadow under a sprite, they made a black/noc colour grid, the background shown between the black dots, creating a shadow effect (same thing for windows, creating a glass effect). With the map smoothing, it would most likely look terrible.

On the other hand, a little black or white overlaid could create a neat distortion effect to make the craft partially visible and more fun to fight against

TO EVERYONE HERE!!!
I have started a new topic on this, discussing all the aspects on how to create a cloaking device. Please post all images and thoughts here:
