Is there anything we can do to improve upon them? Can we make them home in on missiles. Can we reskin them? Also, is it possible to make new varieties such as flares, chaff, and radar jamming?

I always thought it would be neat to be able to choose your countermeasures, just like your primary and secondary weapons. You could pick between the current ECM, chaff, or flares as LLL said. Or perhaps mines, gunboys, and nav buoys.

What's the ECM?
Is there a countermease pack out there?
Can countermeasures be changed during a mission?
Are CMs easy to code?
(BTW, if I ever do model... It will be for stuff like Pharosi, Nav Buoys, and CMs.

currently there is very little that can be done with CMs, though I realy realy want to make changes in the code.

If I'm gonna code the CMs, I have to know what we CAN do with them so far. Also, where in the code is the CM sexps located.

by code I meant source code, look at the very end of the weapons table to see what you can do

There are too many variables to consider for CM coding. However, I might be able to give the ECM a geometrical face lift and make it look like a Descent 3 Guide-bot flare. Hopefully I shouldn't have to change any code. Gotta love spikiness...
What I find interesting is that Shivans use the same crappy CM as the GTVA...
(BTW, does anyone have a good picture of the guide-bot flare?)

One thing to consider, Large, is that the CM model is seen it for less than ten seconds of your entire career as a GTVA pilot. Thus, V made it a FPS-friendly low-poly job. Perhaps making the CM pof more detailed is not such a good idea, especially given the relatively small gains.
Have a look in the SCP forum, there's a thread about this matter somwhere on the first two pages.

I actually did something stupid like this once... I reskinned a tsunami to be mostly black, and set it as the countermeasure pof file... Ten when I came back and played the game a month later, I forgot that I did it, and wonderred where the hell all of these tsunamis were being launched from...

If there were multiple countermeasure types we could have different effects. like chaff would spray a bunch of sprites out the back of your ship. flare would home in on missiles. stuff like that
