Version 2.3.0 is out and vB 3 is on the way...
-
As I understand it, upgrading a system like a vB or UBB is a major pain... maybe the admins are waiting for vB 3 Full (I think it's in beta ATM).
-
Wasn't 2.3 out a while ago? I'm not updating til 3
-
I'm also pretty sure 2.3.0 has been out for a while, the little "upgrade to so-and-so version" thing has been on my AdminCP for a while. 3s probably worth upgrading though, can a 2.x upgrade to 3?

What's new in vB3 anyway?
-
Well what can be new?
anyway, the Admins here wouldn't allow any of the new stuff. Like avatars and such.

:wtf: You think that avatars is something new in vB3?? :wtf:
Let's put it this way... if they implement groups in such a way that each group can have its own avatar - whether through a proper avatar system or via title HTML "hacking" like we have now - and users can belong to more than one group at a time, and groups can be assigned private forum access so that all we need to do to add a new team member to XYZ project is add them to the XYZ group, we'll change the avatar system. :D

not at all, that was just an example of what is not allowed now. There will be loads of new features that you will not allow.:D
-
If you fancy administrating avatars for every person who wants one, or wants to change one - be my guest :)
-
Spacebattles manages it.
But I don't know what sort of BB it is...
-
I fail to see how user-group multi-avatar support is anything special.
I'm surprised no-one has made a hack for it yet.

It's not all that special, it's simply a feature that we could really take advantage of here.
Oh, and I looked through the new features planned for vB3 - they have it, the precious, and WE WANTSSS ITT!!!11234

It's vB as well. But SB allows user-chosen avatars, unlike here, where you get them based on what projects you belong to.
-
Exactly.
-
Thunder: Most groups, the people manage the avatars themselves, with limits for size and such. It's not an admin matter at all, except for the rare troll who's dumb enough to, say, shrink the goatse.cx picture down to 200x200 who lasts about a minute.
-
But ours also feature "badges" to ID those who work on community projects. Let people do it themselves and whats to stop someone copying all the code up and suddenly becoming part of every project there is around here? It'd get abused.
-
True, the current system would have that problem- though I don't know why anyone would bother, it'd be a bit like forging an ID badge and sneaking through corporate security so that you could sit in on an accounting meeting at some random company.
-
Yah, it would be sad - trouble is, the internet is full of that kind of people. I wouldn't like to chance it.
-
Incidentially, is it really the avatar code that gives you accesses? I don't have a Rec avatar (guess I'm not on the staff proper, just a, uh, consultant or some technical term like that), but I get on the private forum easily enough.
-
No, avatars and access is entirely seperate.
-
Thought as much. So, the worry is more just people stealing the avatar and pretending to their friends to be on the staff of some project until the real staff started screaming at them?
Now THAT would be sad.
-
t'would make for some nice drama :D
We haven't had any real drama in a loong time :p
-
Yeah, somebody needs to hack something. Or Steak needs to come back, only to be smothered under a heap of fanatical worshippers and driven off again.

Simple.
That way, project leaders could give people avatars and all you guys would have to do would be set permissions.
-
You mean Setekh, right? Meh... we've got half a year of school left... quite the pain. He and I'll both be spending plenty more time here after... umm, six months time or so? Near November.

Thing is T, if people really want to do it, they'll find a way to do it. There isn't a whole lot you can do to stop them. You can only forsee so much, so why block a function just because someone MIGHT abuse it? We're pretty much a tightly knit group as it is. We're not exactly getting a large influx of newbies per day so....what's the harm in allowing user avatars?

Harm? It's not about harm. It's about recognition.

Seriously, here's how we have it, for those of you who for whatever reason haven't realized it yet:
- Custom user titles are admin-assigned in recognition of either something noteworthy that person did, or something incredibly stupid. I don't know when it started being viewed as "I'm part of the ABC hosted project; where's my custom title?", but that's not how things are supposed to go. Also, requesting a custom title in recognition for something you did is a Bad Idea™. If you feel it's something really noteworthy, and nothing has happened to your title, then too bad. :D
- Avatars (aside from admin avatars, obviously) signify a user being a part of a hosted project team. Nothing more, nothing less. They are not up for user modification in any way.
- User location is something we've been lenient about; many of you have all sorts of ridiculous location entries. Fine, whatever - feel free to express yourself through that, but keep them short for crying out loud. @ Su. ;)
- Lastly, signiatures... these are also for personal expression, with a significantly greater amount of freedom. Be colorful, be creative, but be under 10 word-wrapped lines at 1024x768, m'kay? That means if your browser is 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels tall, you should not have more than 10 lines of signiature in your posts. However, empty lines do not count - within reason, and the admins decide what reason is. :D But up to now, you've all been fairly ok with this, and we've only had to point out overly wordy siggys to a few people.
Did I miss anything?
-
Don't forget font size setting at 1024x768.
Those with fonts set to a small size at 1024x768 will be able to fit more on 10 lines than those with larger font size settings.

Contrary to popular belief, we know what we're going vert, thanks. :p
