I'm playing some SNES games... planning to get myself a dreamcast and a saturn sometime so I can do some old console gaming.

Oh and I'm playing a few old comp games, like system shock 2 (debating whether to go pick up thief) and I have that stash of dos games somewhere....

Same here. I was just playing Monkey Island 2 a few days; absolutely hilarious. :D Recently finished Descent 2 again as well.

By the way can someone tell me what happens in the end of System Shock 2? I beat the game but the HOTU version does not have the movies so it just dumped me to the main menu instead.

Frontier Ellite anyone? I might make a Panther Clipper for freespace, sure would 0wn with its Large particle accelerator. Yup, sure was a great game, I still know most the star map.

And transport tycoon.  I played that for 31 hours in just 7 days.  And that was a school week

And starcraft of course.  I wonder how many zerg I had smoked with my seige tank and bunker combo's... thousands. Ten thousand? Twenty?

I did consider making some mods based on the ships from Frontier but after looking at the manual I realised that they were actually so simple that either I'd have to completely reinvent them or end up with 50 poly ships :)

Best game ever. I traded in my Panther Clipper for an Imperial Courier and started military missions in the Imperial sector, by this point I'd been playing the game for about four months solid. I loved it and can't wait until something more tangible is released about Elite 4.

I was never a fighter or a miner (I always found mining a pain in the ass)  I was a trader, used to run animal skins from one of the sytems you started on (not Lave) the Icy one, can't remember the name, to Barnards star, take agricultural machiney to Sol and then repeat the run in reverse.

I really loved that game, damn shame I can't get hold of a PC version.

Has anyone here played Supaplex? It was a freeware puzzle-like game released around 1990 and was the other one that I spent several hundreds of hours about a decade ago. There was a mac port of it called Infotron which is how I was introduced to the game and some fans made a windows port called Megaplex more recently. Highly addictive and definitely recommended.

I couldn't get that to work either, as it just gives an illegal operation immediately on startup.

Frontier and Frontier Encounters are both available for £5 each from The Elite Club (http://www.eliteclub.co.uk/download/)

Plus you can play them for 30 days to try them out for free :)

The Amiga version is free though so if you have UAE set up you can play that instead :)

Ooh, I've rigged my my laptop as a "old games" comp. Basically, been playing: Monkey Islands 1-3, Quest for Glory 1-5, Space Quest 1-6 and not to mention DIG, Full Throttle, Sam and Max, and Day of the Tentacle. I'll hopefully get Half-Life to work. Then of course the CLASSIC Another World or in some places known as Out of This Word.

I'm a sucker for those GOOD ol' Adventure games....

Oh man, how could I forget, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is also on my "old games" laptop. :D

I had the walkthrough but I never used it until that section. I think it was a case of just hitting the buttons, worked for me. So sad how the guy sacrificed himself for you. I really liked that game too.

Don't suppose anyone played the Turrican games? They were the best.

Kara. I have the UAE version but it's not a pirate copy so the manual check is still active. I tried the shareware versions of Encounters and Frontier but I'm running ME and I'm not inclined to spend five hours installing 98 and all the legacy drivers for DOS gaming. Guess I'll just have to commit it back to memory, though I guess that's not too bad, I can get back to playing Vice City PC now.

Well, how I usually did was that I just pressed all the buttons until I blew half of the arena away and the the only button left was the ejection one. :D

Oh by the way, has anyone ever played the Another World Sequel? HEART OF THE ALIEN?

Weird and Sad game. You play the alien this time and it takes place during and after the first game. Its odd, but has a real sad ending. Only came out for Sega Saturn but if I remember correctily Home of the underdogs has it.

never heard about this one.
you mean you play as the alien that helps the dude from times to times ( I remember something like that, no? ).
rah, another world. the begining of the game is engraved in my memory forever, with the ferrari, the failed experience, then blma, you're thrown directly at the command ( and in a pool infested with tentacle thinguys ), and you get out of the water just in time, and just to face that lion thingy , then...
damn, when I think of it, I don't recall any game that achieved to make the plot evolve that much while playing...
it's a masterpiece if you ask me ( it also brought me a ****ing virus :p )

Thankyou thankyou. I loved Turrican and i'm sad that few people here got to experience it because it is without doubt the BEST 2d Platform/shooter EVER. The music is still ingrained in my head and I could hum you the tune from any of the levels, I can even remember the song titles from some of them.

I guess that makes me a geek.

Also the one with the single funniest scene. There is a bit on one of the paths that literally made me cry with laughter. It's the bit with Indy doing his shadow puppet routine. The problem is that IIRC it only occurs if you don't have all the items you need to solve the puzzle but try anyway so most people probably missed it.

I loved Another World too. I must have played it through about 5 or 6 times. I personally love the blast run where you're running through the tunnel as the doors are being blown up behind you :) I also loved the way you didn't make it home in the end but instead get carried off on the back of that weird flying creature thanks to the friendly alien :)

If you liked AW it might also be worth looking into Flashback and also Wasted Dreams.

Turrican was cool but Turrican II was better in my opinion. Last time I installed Deliplayer I had nothing but trouble with it but I'm still tempted to try again just so I can listen to all the music.

If we're talking Amiga games then I've got a huge list (which I won't bore you all with for now) but the forgotten classic I have to mention is Warhead. :)

I absolutely loved that game. Probably my favourite newtonian physics space combat sim of all time. You can see a lot of it in I-war which was (partly) written by the same guy.

there's also Dark Light ( ;7) Conflict. wasn't really newtonian, but the ship had a huge momentum. only got to play the demo, but I wish I could get my hands on the full game.

for another Another World-like, there's Dark Earth, made by the same guy.

Is that the part in the hotel in Monte Carlo after Trottier runs away? Indy's nur-ab-sal figure looks like some kind of rabbit. :D I don't think you need to lack any items there to do that though; all you do is turn off the lights and then use the flashlight.

It was also funny when Indy locks Al-Jabbar in his own closet in the wits path, which causes him to completely blow his top.

I think the funniest bit was at the beginning when you are talking to that Biff doorman guy and start throwing insults at him. :D There are actually three ways to get into the theater and Sophia gives you a different fortune reading later on based on what you did here.

Another older game I really want to play is Beneath a Steel Sky. It works fine up to a certain point, but then the game just exits with some strange "resource not found" error. I tried downloading it from four different places and got the same thing with all of the copies, which is a pity since the game looked really good up to that point.

Could never get past the halfway boss on the second stage of Xenon 2. That game was one of the only games that no one I knew could ever complete. I could never get Zeewolf 2 to work but I loved Zeewolf. But if there's one game that proves that gameplay is all that matters it has to be Speedball 2. If I'd have put as many hours into my education as I did into this game I'd be a millionaire by now :)

ah, yeah, I know that ( the bug, never played the game ). it was on the retail version too ( very smart, heh? ). here was something to do to fix it, you should make a search on google or something.

I love adventure games. Bah, all this 3D stuff... they got nothing on the gameplay of Keen. :)

Oh so it's my fault that only 1% percent of your brain is working.
I've seen comments that weren't even funny and people just started to spam the thread with LOLs. Mostly, these comments were written by someone "high up". and so people just started laughing madly because of their fear of the high uppers.

Need I say more?

Oh, and back on topic: BIG RED RACING!!!!

[color=66ff00]Yeah flashback was good, I found another world to be a little too 'you must time everything to perfection or die' which frustrated me to the point where it just wasn't fun anymore. :sigh:

I forgot about bladerunner which I though was quite cool, I got decent scores on the shooting range too. :)

Starwing/fox for the snes is one of my personal favourites, real 'seat of your pants' game.
Kicker is good too, it's a real oldie, an arcade game. You can still get the ROM and run it on mame, it's a good laugh. :)

YEAH! I used to get stuck on disc 2, tho. I'd get to a point when wherever I went, there was my boss in a long coat and hat telling me to "go home and get some rest, McCoy", so i did, and nothing happened.

mmh... I remember him saying that, but I don't remember being stuck there.
altho there's one HUGE pb about that game: at the very begining, there's a tiny bullet shell to find on the first crime set ( the place where they sell animals ). it's damn hard to see, and if you miss it, well, you can't finish the game, you'll be stuck at one point or another.
that was quite stupid, even more since you can't go back to the place and pick it up later...

I got the final boss and nearly defeated him once. I probably would have done it if I hadn't bought the Bitmap Shades! :D They were useful in Speedball 2 so I assumed they would be good here too.
As for speedball 2. I still play that now whenever I have friends over. It really can't be beaten as an after pub game :)

They should get the original Speedball 2 team together and make a remake, not like the crappy 3d playstation one, but using high res sprites and not touching any of the gameplay dynamics whatsoever. That is the closest thing to a perfect game I have ever came across, brilliant fun single or multiplayer.

God, you just HAD to go and remind me, didn't you?

At least it was someone else's waste of money. Bad enough that that thing took up my hard disk space. I mean, fine, make an entirely linear horror game where all there is to do is hunt pixels, and you have to find every one or the game plumb just doesn't progress, but at least make a monster that's better than a malevolent fart cloud and a steroidal worm.

I'm suprised you even bothered to play. Though I wouldn't mind a quick blast to see what was so bad about it. Wouldn't mind a go at "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties" either.

Sam and Max Hit The Road. It was one of those click-everywhere-till-you-find-something games. If you didn't reach into the mousehole in your flat at the beginning of the game, you didn't have money to buy a crucial thing right near the end... real pain in the butt. Hilarious game, though. :D

I bother(ed) to play quite a lot of things I really shouldn't (have), and I was a dumb kid who could pretty much be wowed by anything better than 8-bits then, anyway. This was pretty much back in the days when Blood was a snazzy new special-effects theatre and the most coherent plot was StarCraft's, mind.;)

Basically, it was one of those "experimental" games where they try something that sounds like it could be fun and find that it isn't at all. In this case, the game was meant to be kinda half-movie, half-game. It was linear to the point where concepts like "free will" and "playing the game at all differently from how it was intended" were best regarded as jokes- if you were at the point where you'd gotten into the Town and bought the (forget what), you then had the ability to get the Magic T-Bone, and you'd better damn well get the Magic T-Bone, or you'd end up going back and forth between the same four frames over and over again until you damn well got it. And it went on and ON. You couldn't even die until the very end.

After about half an hour of searching I finally found a solution. It seems that pressing the scroll lock key right before that part to disable background transitions prevents the crashes, so I can now finally play this game. :D It's looking very interesting so far and is quite funny too; some classic adventure game goodness... :D

anyone remember "Fatal Distractions"?!  I'll pay a LOT of money for that CD-ROM if anyone has it or knows of someone who does... i LOVED that pack.  had like 87 games on it, mostly shareware, but a few freeware.  included games like:

Pickle Wars
Doom
Descent (?)
Xargon
Jill of the Jungle
Cosmic Cosmo
Captain Comic
Wolfenstein 3D (?)
God of Thunder
Prince of Persia (?)
Commander Keen (lots of them, i think three of the four games... all demos though)

and tons of strategy, puzzle, and side-scroller games :D

man i loved it :D

oh, Prince of Persia; that is another one I played a lot around 1990 along with its sequel.

By the way, has anyone tried running the user-made 3dfx patches for either Descent or Descent 2? They make the games look exponentially better than they used to and very, very impressive for 95/96 games.

You running it in "real" DOS or under Win98? BASS is apparently quite picky about running in anything other than real DOS. If you can wait a bit, ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/) may provide a solution. It's a Virtual Machine for the SCUMM engine (hence the name) used in, among other things, LucasArts adventure games. BASS support is in the works, preliminary support is already in CVS but as yet, only the intro works. A lot of the code required to get more than that is apparently in there but it just hasn't been tied together yet.
