Title: Math people help a moron :)
Post by: Ashrak on May 18, 2003, 10:24:17 am
i have 2 equasions x+y+2=o and 2x+5y-3=0 (these are lines) and i need to find the corner in between

how?

x+y=-2
2x+5y=3

As far as I can go.

I know. but the chance are that the fact they are lines does not matter. You probably have to treat them as quadratic (or simultaneous) equations, to work out x and y, then draw the lines.

If A) x+y=-2
   B) 2x+5y=3

Then multiply A*2

A) 2x+2y=-4

A) - B)
2x+2y=-4
2x+5y=3
--------------
-3y=-7
-y=-7/3 = -2.333333333333 etc.

Substitute in A) x+ (-2.333333333etc) = -2
then x = -0.333333333333

Check in B) 2(0.333333333333)+5(-2.33333333333) =
0.666666666+ -11.666666666= -11

Oh dear. Theory=yes. Practice = no.

set them both equal to "y"

now put them both equal to each other

now solve for "x" (put "x" on one side and the numbers on the other)

now you've got an "X" position, plug it in to the original equation(s)

I think that's what I was tring to do, but it went hoorribly wrong.

Petrarch, that's a +2.33333333333, not -.

x+7/3=-2
x=-13/3 (-4.3333333333333333)

2(-13/3)+5(7/3)=3

So it does work.

ok now you told me how to get a cordinate of a point now can you tell me how to get the Angle corner or whatever you call it that is created when those 2 straight lines cross eachother i need the size of the angle between the crossed lines .....
Title: Math people help a moron :)

The best way would be to draw the lines on a grid, and measure the angle.

cant i have to calculate it degrees minutes and seconds

:wtf:

y=mx+c is your friend.

Rearrange, find the gradients (m)...  Then i think you multiply them, and take tan-1 of that. I got 21.8 degrees.

use the distance formula between on the 3 points you now have. It'll give you the distance between each of the points, then you can use the law of cosines to figure out the measure of the angle created by the intersection of the two lines.

distance formula: Square Root of: (x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2
law of cosines: c^2=a^2+b^2-2ac(cos C)

there's probably an easier way, a lot easier way, but whatever, I like doing things the hard way.

x+y+2=0
x+2=-y
-x-2=y

2x+5y-3=0
2x-3=-5y
(-2x+3)/5=y

-x-2 = (-2x+3)/5
-x-2 = -2x/5+3/5
-3x/5 = 13/5
x = -13/3 (this is the point where the two equations are equal)

Now, assuming you want the angle of the interior part of the point:

Let f(x) = -x-2 and g(x) = (-2x+3)/5
f(-2) = 0
g(1.5) = 0
(calculated some zero's as "starting points" for the "sides" of the triangle)

Let x2 = -13/3 and y2 = f(-13/3) = g(-13/3) = 7/3
Let x1 = -2 and y1 = f(-2) = 0

Use distance formula to find the distance between the two points:
d = Sqrt((x2-x1)²+(y2-y1)²)
d = Sqrt((-13/3-(-2))²+(7/3-0)²)
d = Sqrt(49/9+49/9)
d = Sqrt(98/9) = 3.29983164553722

let's call this side A

Now,
Let x2 = -13/3 and y2 = f(-13/3) = g(-13/3) = 7/3
Let x1 = 1.5 and y1 = g(1.5) = 0

d = Sqrt((-13/3-1.5)²+(7/3-0)²)
d = Sqrt(34.0277777777777+49/9)
d = 6.28269227499024

let's call this side B

We know the distance from x=-2 to x=1.5... 3.5 - call this side C

Now, using the law of cosines

Now, we want the angle opposite side C:
cos(c) = (A²+B²-C²)/(2*A*B)
cos(c) = 0.919145030018056
c = 23.1985905136485°

Or to be more precise, 23 degrees, 11 minutes, and 54.9 seconds

I'm not sure that your teacher would prefer you to do it this way - but I can't remember any other shorter ways of doing it right off the top of my head. :p

x + y + 2 = 0
2x + 5y -3 = 0

-x - 2 = y
(-2x +3)/5 = y

-x - 2 = (-2x +3)/5

-5x -10 = -2x +3

-5x -10 +2x -3 = 0

-3x - 13 = 0

-3x = 13

x = -13/3

now just plug -13/3 into ether equasion and (if I did this right, it's been a while) you should get the same thing

And that's exactly wrong too. Because X = 2,33 and Y = -0,33

PROOF:

x + y = 2

2,33 + (-0,33) = 2,33 - 0,33 = 2

Quit trying to fool us with mathematical trickery. :p

4 - 2 is also 2 :p
so is 8 - 6

I posted the solution above, so why should the discussion continue? :rolleyes:

y = -x - 2
y = -(2/5)x + (3/5)
-x - 2 = -(2/5)x + (3/5)
-(3/5)x = 2 + 3/5

x = -7.2

y = -(-7.2) - 2
y = 5.2

Edit: Ugh, I think Tiara and Petrarch's solution is right, but I can't get it w/o a calculator. :confused:

(http://jgmart.tripod.com/graph1.html)

Ahha! I have another, shorter solution!

Note that AB forms a height, also note that AB is equal to BD, meaning that triangle is a 45°-45°-90°, which means that the angle supplementary to D is 135°.

AB²+BC²=AC²
2.33333333333333²+5.83333333333333²=AC²
AC = 6.28269227499025 (as discovered in my previous solution)

Now we can use law of sines!

sin(135°)/6.28269227499025 = sin(ß)/3.5
0.112548371022619 = sin(ß)/3.5
0.393919298579167 = sin(ß)
23.1985905136481° = ß

23 degrees, 11 minutes, 54.925849133154 seconds

Money= the root of evil

Women = (sqrt(evil))^2

This part of the proof I find disputable... the money's "root" isn't necessarily the "square root" of money. What if it's the cube root? Or the fourth root? There are so many nth roots that the root of money could be. :p

Why is money the root of evil? Sure it can be, but for me it is the root of pleasure ;7 (well at least part of it)

Yeah conclusion is, women are sticking to money like flies to glue.
Not true.  In fact, I've found that what most single women around here seem to want...... other women.  ;)

Why do SO MANY misquote this phrase? The ------->love<------- of money is the root of all evil.

Just because you don't agree with an opinion, doesnt mean its not allowed.

I didn't say it wasn't allowed. I said that this wasn't the right place for it.

back ta math people!

for a cookie can someone explain to me, somewhat simply, what rings/fields are? The explanation on wolfram wasn't exactly the easiest to comprehend with my level of math jargon :p
Title: Math people help a moron :)

I think they are something similar to vector spaces, basically sets of numbers that satisfy a bunch of rules. The rules for the ring are the ones given on the Mathworld site and include most of the usual real number rules. The field is like a ring but the elements in a field also need to have multiplicative inverses (that are also in the field) and be commutative under multiplication in addition to satisfying all the ring rules. I have no idea why these rings and fields are so important though.
