Title: Good News for the Community
Post by: demon442 on May 19, 2003, 11:57:44 pm
The other day, when i was strolling through my local Wal-Mart(don't ask, small town), i happened on the new Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital 3D.  The new stick is a cross of last years model with the year before's, in short ugly but almost ergonomic.  But the real gem was the software that Logitech is now including with it(probably got tired of M$'s MW4\Sidewinder set).  They are now including FreeSpace 2: Collosus.  I'm guessing this is the half-the-first-disk-demo that seems to be so popular.  With this, new players will find freespace and if 50% like the game, 20% will find HLP and 10% may stay.  You can figure up the total on your own.  But the bottom line is that there will be fresh blood and fresh ideas coming into HLP, and that can rejuvinate the community and stock some of these stagnent campaigns with able bodied workers.  I await the newbies with a hot beam cannon and stock of flame throwers.

I just saw the same thing yesterday (was thinkin' about buying the stick too.. I could use one.)

Only prob is, it isn't the full game and it's almost impossible to find the full game decently.

(of course there's always Hotu for them if they make it here. Either way, I guess it's only a plus. )

The HOTU one still has... issues.

I really should have gone ahead and done the SCP-DivX thing, but I think there was a problem with it or something. Oh well, this summer perhaps.

How will they find HLP?

Well, if they google, Freespace Watch is 8th on the list. Hopefully they'll find the forums there, ask around, see that VWBB sucks, and get sent here by someone.

Of course, I found Twilight I think as the first Freespace thing I ever searched for somehow, then got led to MT's site, then borwsed the VBB before it was buletin (or whatever.. when it was just one big page with topics down it, not like an actual board) browsed there, signed up.. blah blah blah and so on. )

bottom line, hopefully the n00bs will be smarter than I was... :blah:

EDIT: Or of course they happen to browse down 3dap's hosted list or see a reference to HLP via freespace. Not that that's the most likely path here....

Although limited I believe you can use Colossus to play mulitplayer so newbies might find us that way.

www.freespace2.com still works.  It just isn't updated pretty much.

If someone where to release a full mod pack with a custom campaign specifically for the FS_Open engine (ie no part of the original FS2 is required to play it) then we might start to see some interest from fresh blood back into the community.

[q]From an email I just sent to [email protected]:

Hello,
I realize that updates to the freespace2.com site are probably unheard of by now, but could I make a last request as an admin of one of the last 2 main Freespace-related sites still active on the net? Freespace 2: Colossus is beiing packaged with the new Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital 3D joystick in Walmart, and it would be a shame to link all the fresh blood to dead sites (as most of those sites on the list are).

Please add to the community list:

We'll see if anyone even checks that email address anymore, which I have doubts about. Oh well.

Have any of you ever read the bug fix of the day (http://www.freespace2.com/bfod.cfm) at freespace2.com?

It makes for quite interesting reading.

Dave Baranec: How about "Conspicuous Intelligence Cross" ? That fits.

Anoop Shekar: Yeah, but would you want an Intelligence Cross to be conspicuous?

that's goin' on the siggy!

You've got high hopes. :)

The only way to keep FS alive is to but a load of merchandise from the HLP Stores (http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/search/?q=freespace&x=6&y=7) and wear it everywhere!

**** them then.

We'll do it ourselves.

I need 20 meters of coaxial EM-shielded cable, 2 PCI-Serial adaptor card thingies, a USB CD-Burner, 5 meters of rope, 2 cans of mace, 3 stout men to work the bellows and a ninja suit.

i was looking in the bug fix page, saw this :

8.2.99
Item #: 1364
Original date: 7/22/1999
From : James Agay to Dave Andsager

[Freespace 2] Dave, Brad and I would really like a sexp to point and fly cap ships toward one another. AI-CHASE causes problems for the big ships and using ragular waypoint paths causes trouble since we never know where a ship will be when a given goal is complete. Having a way to force the big ships to face off would be both incredibally handy and a great time saver for us. Can it be done?

Dave Baranec:Unless this can be done in <= 2 days with no side effects or bugs, this is a not-doing.

Mike Kulas:Seems easy if we can make some assumptions, mainly assuming we can ignore collisions with other ships. If so, this seems like a few hours of work. Heck, I could probably code this

Dave Baranec is the lead programmer on FS2 and is keeper of the schedule for programmers. Mike was a programmer long ago on FS1. Turns out this system was added in a few hours. Expect to see capital ship battles that are better than ever.

so did they ever add  "a sexp to point and fly cap ships toward one another"??  I'm new to fred2 so excuse my ignorance.
