Hey all.. quick question for those of you in the know..
I want to aquire my own domain and web hosting with a company to allow for the reopening of City Of Light. However I'd have to pay for this space and I need to know something about what I'm getting for my money:
Data Transfer: Never a problem with 3DAP but now I have to think of it, what's the average data transfer (per month) of something like HLP, COL or The Array (Estimate...) assuming nothing massive comes up like a 100MB movie file (unlikely but still).
-
if you've got a page like COL, the array, etc. with 1024x renders then you're looking at a lot of transfer... otherwise if it's just a few HTML pages, a few scripts, and some images, then who knows, depends how many hits you get to your site.
how many hits do you get to your site? :D
-
Right now? None ;) but for a time it was around 100 a week and yes, we're talking lots of images here... it's an art site after all.
-
hard to tell. perhaps an0n will have more of a clue, since his site has more images than any of ours...
you're probably looking at around a few GB a month
100 hits per day * 31 days = 3100 hits per months... let's say 3000.
if each user only uses 2 MB of bandwidth (that's a WHOLE lot... probably be a whole lot less) that's 3000*2=6000 MB=6 GB
-
Right, but thats maximum yield... here's hoping that I won't have people coming along and FTP dumping the entire site onto their hard drives for personal viewing on a regular basis...
-
You might want to take a serious look at http://www.globat.com/
They look really good to me... don't know how well their speed goes, but hey, just giving you an option.
-
I have 10GB monthly allocation and still keep running out of bandwidth a week or two early.. More money comes out the wallet next.. ;)

Meh, just realized its not so great, their hosting agreement:
Binary files such as images, video and sound (i.e MP3, WAV, RA, GIF, JPG but not limited to those file extensions) may only account for a maximum of 50% of Customer's total bandwidth usage before customer must upgrade to a higher performance solution.
and
at no time shall Customer use more than 15 simultanious processes by and with any of Customer's applications and not upload any file larger than 10 megabyte.

I get all the Fattonys/Nodewar/GenocidalMonkey hosting from there under a single Professional account. If you do buy something from them, use that link. I get a metric fuckload of commision in the form of account credit (it goes towards paying off my monthly charges, I don't get any actual cash).
At its peak, NW was getting about 5K hits a day and using about 1.7Gb/month bandwidth.
-
isn't everything (fattonys, NW, etc.) hosted on your server?
-
This is what i've got so far..
Target Aud: Fans (80%+) // Non-Fans (20%-)
Current site size is 20MB
Growth rate at 10% (2MB every month)
Some sites may require a cc but have an option of chq/mo

globat also looks interesting...
but the best bet is probably your ISP - see if you can get a deal made or something.
to some degree you do wana find out what type of server your site will be hosted on and how many users can view at once..
-
Cheers guys, I doubt I want or need more than 150MB at the moment (large to be on the safe size) and around 4/5GB of bandwidth a month at large...I'll have to see what I can find in that respect.

The advanced pack looks to be about what you are after and they take UK cards too, which many of these off shore ones don't (since most of them are american and don't know what switch/solo is).
It's what I've got both my homepage and Homeworld site on.
The only time they do go down is during net 'rush hour' when server maintainance is performed. And that isn't very often.

I've told you before, my server died a horrible, tedious death. It was too much trouble maintaining the ***** so I took the easy way out.
