Anyone have any experience in making Techroom animations? The best way i can think of is getting frame by frame from modelview to Flash, and then exporting as an AVI or something to use in-game...
however, that doens't allow for the little "flash" at the start. how do you pros do it? what programs and methods do you use?

Hmm. There's a guide somewhere around.

3ds max. Simple as that. Make a wireframe, apply a slice modifier, add a textured version, also add slice to that, make a wireframe grid, animate.

Lightwave is just as easy to do it...
and you can render each frame as an individual image so anibuild can just convert it...
I think MAX can do the same, not sure how though...
-
so i need:
anibuild(er?) (isn't that a DM Tool?)
Lightwave.
now is Lightwave freeware or do i have to buy it hehehehehe

Lightwave is a frickin expensive program that was used to do the CGI scenes for Babylon 5.
-
Among other things, like Pearl Harbour, DS9..
its by far the cheapest of the "Big Name" programs..
-
expensive, eh? Like relative to what? If it's more expensive to Photoshop, then screw it. if it's less expensive than Photoshop, then screw it too.
-
True.

And of course, warez is only a tenner. But we're all far to strong to fall for such temptations :D

Ever seen Babylon 5? They aren't joking when they say it was made on Lightwave (although all the models were made on the Amiga version which was better in those days)

They started on Toaster I think...and then went to Lightwave. That was what I always thought.
B5 Season 1 is much more primitive compaired to what they were doing by Season 3, 4, and A Call to Arms was probably the best CGI they did.

The toaster is the Amiga hardware that Lightwave was bundled with. Eventually it got unbundled and sold seperately from the toaster and then later got ported to the PC.
I agree that the CGI did improve in later episodes but I miss the way that capships slowly fell apart when destroyed in series 2.
By series 3 they went for the more standard big explosion and debris route which wasn't as visually stunning.
-
Haven't seen B5 series or any B5 movies on DVD...if thats what ur referring in terms of cg...but legend of the rangers has pretty good cg in it. (holographic displays, weapons fire, etc)
-
o, no, I was just talking about the movie itself :) LotR ( no, not Lord of the Rings :p ) had good CGI indeed :).

Yeah; just like the Death Star. But they can do some damn impressive things these days... if you can imagine it, it can happen. That's amazing. :)
