Boy, i'm on a new-topic spree lately.
I'm just curious, what inspires you guys to write/render/model? I usually put an intersting, sci-fi background on my desktop, and play some music for regular tempo parts, and some fast techno for the action scenes.
-
Writing (in the form of Campaigns usually) : Anything and everything, from Movies, to the last video game I finished, to my favourite music song. Whether it's something deep like a movie theme or a story or feeling I pick out of a song, or something as shallow as liking the idea/character/theme of the move. Unfortuneatly, it usually plays like hell on whatever *serious* Idea I have going on at the time. In the end though, it usually exposes some fatal flaw in the plot or idea and is for the better :D
Mission Writing: Always action. Anytime I think of a mission, my mind leeps straight to the action part. So the inspiration usually comes in the form of Playing another mission, listening to some heavy metal or just thinkg of the last Star Wars-esque battle scene floating around in my head.
-
Movies, books, music, games... it can be anything.
One of the best things for inspiration is old crap. I keep most of the garbage that I don't finish and look at it occasionally. You'd be surprised what kind of cool stuff you think of later when looking at some random spline, or some chunk of polys you thought would make a cool engine.
-
Movie soundtrack, mainly the one from Aliens. I've written thirteen chapters out of listening to it.
For missions, generally other missions, action movies, or, once again, soundtrack.

I guess I'd have to say music is numero uno in my book. As well as other games/shows/misc. stuff.

I wasn't being serious:rolleyes:
Anything can inspire me. Music, a prety picture, or a radom thought i get.
-
music, movies, anime, games... quite a lot of things
or just plain foolish imagination :D
-
I think movies and books inspire me alot. But I do have a REALLY hefty imagination and write alot of short stuff around the rim of my note books and stuff, so afterwards when I forget what I wrote, I read them and get inspired again. So you could say I inspire myself! :D And the Discovery Channel inspires me alot too. Gives me great ideas for stories about how future technology goes dreadfully wrong or how humans in the future live in general...
-
Riding in a bus having nothing to do beats everything.
-
To be honest, I get ideas from what are essentially completely random thoughts. I'll be thinking about something cool and then it will gradually lead into a FS2 campaign idea. Or I'll be thinking about the TI story and a dozen possible branches come off, each worthy of their own campaign. In fact, left to my own devices and with an inexhaustible supply of FREDders and modders I coul have plotted the vbast majority of post Cappella FS2 history (well, my version of it) by now, and a fair bit of the gap between FS1 and FS2 also.
-
Music usually inspires me... sometimes its something I read or see, and recently its been other people's work... Those renders in TBP are what got me to do that last one I posted....
-
'I Walk The Line', by Johnny Cash.
-
Music. At this very minute, Stereophonics (Gotta go there to come back) and the (bizarre) Lemon Jelly album (Lost Horizons).
-
Nuff respect on two counts: Lemon Jelly and the lack of Coldplay
-
As far as mission building goes, mostly real history, other missions and of course, math. :D (I don't write much aside from mission text and cannot model a thing)

[color=66ff00]Just interested; exactly what is it about mathematics that inspires you? As a person who really doesn't understand it I have a natural difficulty seeing why people would be interested in it. Why does it 'rock your world'? :)

what inspires me? Usually memories of my favourite bits of freespace.

Bah, ainsi la langue française m'inspire. J'aime pousser l'oreille géante branche des boîtes de civière de chat. J'aime également pousser les admins à plusieurs reprises jusqu'à ce qu'ils m'interdisent.
Bah, also die deutsche Sprache spornt mich an. Ich mag shoving riesiges Ohr anschließe Katzesänftekästen. Ich mag auch die admins immer wieder stoßen, bis sie mich verbieten.

ok, as a reminder: babelfish is bad, m'k? :D

You know, that's what I thought the gist of the sentence was but I guessed I must have been reading it wrong :D
EDIT : Anyone care to translate the german to see if it's similarly pythonesque?
-
Yes, Babelfish is consistantly cryptic in the sentences it produces, no matter what language you are going to/from. Try translating that back to English and see what it does. Personally, I consider an algorithm bad if it can't return the original entry, but that's just me. It's still about as good an electronic translator as you are going to find.
-
I know Babelfish will almost certainly have done a bad job. I'd just wondered how bad it did with the german. Using babelfish again won't tell me that cause then it's had two attempts to screw up :D

I like the stuff mainly because it's completely abstract, fully precise and also beautiful at times. :D If you have ever taken a course in any sort of number theory (especially analytic), you might see what I mean about the last. :D

I think one of the funniest things to do with it is to translate into every available language and then back once each to end up with what is supposedly English. It creates a complete mess of the text; here is an example I posted some months ago: :D

Dude. Math rocks. Its like... perfect. Physics is cool, but it always comes down to probability in the end. Nothing is as perfect and internally and externally consistent as maths.

I prefer physics. Maths usually boils down to so many laws that no longer logic, but just learning the equations.

Mate of mine reads physics at uni - he reckons some of it is more like philosphy then actual science, like writing an essay's worth of bull**** about his theories on temporal pardoxes and being given an A.

Physics boils down to really fruity paradoxical craziness (which is why its beautiful). Quantum teleportation is an excellent example. It makes no sense. The function just becomes suddenly discontinuous.
Math on the other hand stays entirely logical all the time. It is entirely internally consistent. The rules stay the same in every part of a problem domain.
Of course you can't be serious about physics without being serious about math.

Come to think of it, I think this what Eddie took a lot from too. He always drew rough sketches in modern history class. They didn't make any sense back then, but I can recognise some of them in renders I see at his site.

I'll hazard a guess that you've never used Z, then? (Set algebra based specification language) Bout as logical as a pig in an opera dancing the fandango.

Exactly, perhaps that's why I've never really liked maths, dealing with absolutes makes no sense to me.
Though people seem to constantly say math is "absolute" or "concrete" I tend to disagree. It's been shown that math actually isn't consistent or complete (see godel's inconsistency theorem), it too cannot pass certain barriers (or at least, we don't know how).
Also, it should be mentioned that people definitely do not agree over the absoluteness of many parts of math. Take for example the revolution of non-euclidean geometry, and even now people are debating on the fundamentals of mathematics (set theory and the like).
It's more of a constantly evolving form of art in my mind, in an abstract sort of way (though that may go against the conservative definition of "art").
BTW: what do you mean by absolute? If you mean dealing with "this or that" situations then have you looked at fuzzy logic? (stuff in computer math) That doesn't really deal with absoluteness.

I usually actively look for inspiration in books and movies - I like taking a bunch of movies that are universally thought of as good movies, dissecting them, and figuring out what they have in common or what made them so cool. :)

I think sending small things through bablefish and back again is fairly insparational. at the very least it does get your mind working. it is quite entertaining when you use an oriental language, such as Japinise.

Have Turnsky make a cartoon out of it:
UT and Venom are talking over a table or sitting on a sofa. Sandwich is lounging in an easy chair with one leg tossed over the arm, can of coca-cola in hand, watching TV.
FRAME 1: UT: "What inspires you, Venom?"
FRAME 2: Venom: "Everything inspires me."
FRAME 3: *BELCH* ballon coming from Sandwich
FRAME 4: Venom: "Well, almost everything..."
;)

nah, nah, take that belching thing for exemple: record it, then play it at half speed. you have a dragon grunt!
don't believe me? just try it :D ( well to be effective you have to belch for a full second at least :p )
