ok, it's been a while since i posted one of the Twisted Infinities (http://www.sectorgame.com/twistedinfinities/) ships. here is my latest one that's been in the works for months: the as of yet unnamed luxuy liner. :)
in case red X's appear: 3D view (http://www.geocities.com/vasudanad/TI-ship-pics/Liner1.txt)

Rear view (http://www.geocities.com/vasudanad/TI-ship-pics/Liner4.txt)
it will be among the fleet of civilian vessels to be used in TI.
it is still in development, but i can't see myself changing much on it. all suggestions are welcome though :) (but plz not to big changes-it's been hard enough to get to this stage)
-
:eek2:
wow...that is awesome
-
kickass:yes:
-
(http://www.fattonys.com/images/Upload/KTSeal1.jpg)
wow... that's trick. Size Specs? Name?
-
thanks for the comments :)
KT: size will be about 1.5 km (or whatever works best in game)
ship specs: 2 fighterbays, not to much armour, turrets still being decided on, but looks like there may be about 2-4. (it would rely on it's fighter escort, possibly the player at one stage), not very fast (bout hecate speed?)
model specs: 688 polys-triangulated.
problem is, pcs causes problems with clipping (all versions of pcs with smoothing, and it will do this on ALL models. and i do have the latest version :( )-some faces will dissappear under you and are permanently fly-through & shoot-through.
cob2fs2 fixes this, but has no smoothing :( and this model REALLY needs that smoothing. so it's a debate of model stability vs looks. atm i'm going for looks, and we can try to keep the player from going to close during the mission.
name: atm, liner :D
any suggestions are welcome :)
-
Give me a naming convention (mythos, cities, people, objects, feelings) and i'll hook you up.
and 1.5km? She a super duper, Hilton, for the Celebirties-like ship?
-
pretty much :) a giant hotel touring the galaxy. :)
actually, i wonder if it could have it's own shuttle for ferrying services....
as for names, anything that sounds good and attention grabbing for rich ppl would be great thanx :) doesn't really matter what convention (apparently there's a P&O Aquitaine in service somewhere, so the FS naming convention should be fine :D)
-
Yeah, the main cargo will be the 1500 clones of Britney Spears and Dick van Dyke.
You could name it Hilton. I dont see why not.
-
needs something that flows. Something between Serenity (although its rather clique) and something Latinish like Santa Rosa or summat.
Names of lakes and bays are usually kinda nice too (see Chesapeake)
I'll go browse Encyclopedia Mythica now.
EDIT: Acidalia sounds neat IMO.
-
:eek2: lordy, that rocks man...
-
For once I am speechless.:eek2:
-
Excellent work VA. The only possible suggestion I can come up with is to change the colour of the engines so as to give some contrast with the rest of the ship but even as it is it looks excellent :)
-
thanks for the comments ppl, :) they are very much appreciated.
engines: due to a mistake of mine in taking the rear pic in aurora, i got the top two engines with light on them and the bottom two without. the light seems to hide the main part of them-the bottom two show how they both look in-game-a sort of lightsaber-like purple rod glow.
hmm, by contrast do you mean the glow it'self or the surrounding textures?
name: actually Serenity has a nice ring to it :) how would you pronounce Acidalia tho? if the acid bit is pronounced as acid i don't think it would quite fit. :) (can it be pronounced differently?)
-
Nice model...
Lights are alligned somewhat strange..

What I meant is that at the moment you have white engines on a very white ship. Once you put the glows on them that might change though so it's probably a good idea to wait and see what the glows look like. If they are like what I think it should make my point moot anyway :)
-
ohh finally a new desing:)
good althought the uvmaps seem a little distorted in some areas, and i think you should work a little more around those lateral "holes" (so to don't have the windows rows being cutted that way)
for the clippings and smoothings..
cob2fs2 support shaders, but you have to use smooth or autofacet in truespace
if truespace doesn't smooth your ship, it is a model problem (that can be the cause of the ship appearing/disappearing with pcs) and usually depend by 3d format conversions.
Use the lastes lithunwrap to save the *.cob, or you will not be able to smooth your ships in trueaspace (you applly the smooth but shadings remain faceted), you can download this version from the link of ipandrews tutorial
if you are using different 3dprogs than truespace always use 3dexploration to convert to cob
use also last version of pcs, that work in a pretty different way than the olders, so you may have your problem solved: only problem is that last pcs does not support smooth, but only faceted/autofaceted, that you will have to set in truespace. Also remember that you can modify the anlge of autofaceted up to 120°
-
karma: i did all textures in truespace via tiling and manipulation of how they're applied. (i tried uv mapping a capship before....and never again! :D[it was actually this same liner, but it turned out horrible]), and the model does smooth properly (i had to unsmooth it so pcs 1.34 (latest) would smooth it. hmm....), so i'll give that a try now thanx :)
and it's worked! yay! thanx a bunch :) this will fix a problem another ship has been having. :) (although now it's screwing up the vertical offset or somin on the recessed windows at the rear of the double bridges....how annoying)
as for those hole things and the light texture being warped strangely around them, yeah, i'm gonna be working on that, although i'm not quite sure how to proceed with them. i'll have to experiment lots there :) it is actually the models geometry doing that-straight up or down the look fine, but on the side they look bad. i'll see what i can do
karajorma: hmm, i think i see what you mean. havn't got to the pofing stage yet, but when i do i'll be sure to check up on that :) thanx.
-
about the offset, it is a bug of cob2fs2, if you used it
the algorytm for the offset is wrong, and you have to distort your offset in truespace to obtain the result you want
can't remember now the "rule" to follow to match the wrong algorytm, but i know i posted it sometimes ago, while texturing the xwing
if you use pcs, you don't have this prob obviously
-
if i use PCS, yes it works, but as i said, it gives me some fly-through and see-through polys around the place :( (this is on all models i've tried. they are all perfectly stable and have no other errors. of this i am certain. plus when i tried them in cob2pof [not knowing about the smoothing] they all worked fine and had none of these 'phantom polys' in game)
as for the incorrect algorytm, i'll try and find that fix asap, thanx :)
-
nice liner :)
now that I think of it, there's quite a few liners done for FS2 now...
-
i think i found my old post, cob2fs2 replace voffset with voffset+vrepetition, so you will have to substract the vrepetition to your offset to have the map correctly aligned in game
-
DAMN!!!!! Call it the Quintessence.
-
Front =   - especially the texture.
Middle = :blah: :blah:
Rear = :yes: :yes: :yes:
-
That thing looks like the Queen Elizabeth II on drugs!!!! Call it the Quintessence DAMNIT!

Well you can change it however you want. Ah-sih-dal-e-uh.
or Asydalia (same thing). or Ah-see-da-lee-uh. whatever works.
-
Awesome!
-
thanks a ton Karma :) will do.
LLivingLarge: hmm, probably. i used to be quite interested in sea vessels for a long time-then i moved onto space vessels :D
Quintessence, hmm. i don't really like that one much. to me it just doesn't quite sond 'liner like', although it's probably just me.
not quite sure about Asydalia or similar just yet....it's looking to be more the name of one of them in mission rather than class.
so, until a better name pops up, Serenity it is. :D
beatspete: what's the matter with the middle? i would have thought it would be the rear half that wasn't to good.
(if you mean that one light texture suddenly changes position, currently trying to fix that. :) there is trim there, not much but there :D, but looking again it does still look a little odd....i'll see what i can do there too :) )
-
I want this!!!
Very cool ship, Admiral!
For the ultimate rockstar-cruise ship name, just call it the Decadence....
-
thanx :)
as for Decadence, that sounds fairly approrpriate for the name of one of the liners names in mission.
so we have:
The Serenity class liners in Epsilon Pegasi:
- Decadence
- Asydalia
- Quintessence
nearly finished updating the liner (specifically the rear end and how the lights are sligned and etc.)
it will come with Twisted Infinities campaign atm sorry, but i may possibly release it to any campaign that speciffically want and request it. :)
-
:eek2:
Truly amazing.
EDIT: Just a suggestion, add a detachable "speedboat" type ship, if you can ;)
-
Any wartime conversion for this say like armed troop transport or something like that?
-

Do we really need that many? EP isn't the safest area to be in after all, and a ship like this would definitely attract pirates.
-
who would go onboard a liner called decadence? what's there, sex orgies and drug parties? :D
edit: ok, I realize MANY people would go onboard a ship called decadence
-
NEVER, EVER name a ship 'Titan' or 'Titanic':p
-
erm, ok :nervous: there won't be a Decadence......(hey i'm not exactly looking up the meanings of any suggested names, just going by whether they sound good :D)
so would 2 liners in EP be ok? or maybe just one and another in a nearby system? it doesn't really matter; it is just another background ship :)
on the other hand there are a lot of pirates in EP, and probably a lot of mercs, although we know how reliable they are ;)
 i actually used to be quite interested in the titanic. i'm over it now but cringe every time i hear the name :p

The film ruined it, right? ;7
-
 yeah, that and ships in FS :D
-
Now THAT is one helluva ship.

okay, he's a couple of mine:
"Spirit of freedom"
"angel of paridise"

Let me guess ... the textures are from Jedi Knight 2. They are quite bright!
-
some are, some aren't-almost all have been modifyed in some way.
the major ones are visable in the top view on the top of the bridge things and sme down the centre.

Looks just like Jedi Outcast textures from the Star Destroyer/Death star maps.
-
hmm? there is no star destroyer or death star in jk2....
if you mean the lights texture, it was based on that yeah. :)

That's the whole idea... ;7

Awww! It's a great name! You don't have to have the sex, drugs and loud music, but you know you want to...;)
-
you can make then two twin ships, one called Sodoma and one caled Gomorra
-
hehe, as if they aren't asking for it enough already  :D
-
slight update on model:
i've been fiddling around with the textures around the rear section, trying to get rid of the warped light parts. i think i was mostly succsessful. some bits could be better, but i'm not exactly sure how to proceed with them.
mainly i've been aiming for a look of 'sections' to the lights.

don't worry! it looks better in 3d :)
sorry bout the bad angles-Aurora, for it's hundereds of really cool points (especially displaying glowmaps :D ) doesn't yet support panning the camera :(
oh, and i missed a couple of comments:
Any wartime conversion for this say like armed troop transport or something like that?
well, there could be, but i sure ain't gonna do much to this thing once i get it roughly up to standards for TI. :D it has been THE most stubborn ship i have ever made thus far. you're welcome to try if you want once TI is released. :)
EDIT: Just a suggestion, add a detachable "speedboat" type ship, if you can ;)
not quite sure about a speedboat thing, but i have been drawing a couple of concepts for a sort of transport/shuttle thing to go with it. it would be roughly the same style (lights and white) and be used to ferry passengers here and there. :)
-
pretty:nod:
-
 now THAT was quick :D
-
so i can't sleep;)

See where the lights are not parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ship (they aren't flat with the deck), right in the front? Change that.
And as a tip, everywhere you have the light texture, make sure that the UVMapping is a plain flat surface from the side, at 90 degrees to the ship decks. This will give every surface with windows the same deck height.
If you didn't follow that, say so - I could cook up a graphical explanation if you need.
-
yeah, those fore light texys are kinda stupid as they are, but thus far i havn't been able to make the 2 rows on either side curve around to meet each other like they probably should. i *think* i may be able to tho. i'll give it my best try tho.
and i don't think i quite follow you in the deck height bit. :o sorry.
me likes graphical descriptions tho. that'd be great thanx :)

And as a tip,
it's space ;) maybe the gravity is genetrated from the deck grounds themselves, so it wouldn't matter much, would just be funny :)
-
heh, i just fixed em anyways :D
they now curve round the front of each of those....lump things roughly following the top-down contour. while it does look better i think it still needs some more work. :)
i'll post a pic when i'm not so sleepy and once i've experimented to see just how good it can look.
actually, those.......lumps may warrent smoothing i think. hmm.....
-
well, havn't yet smoothed the lump things, but here are the new lights on them:
Red X protection (http://www.geocities.com/vasudanad/TI-ship-pics/Liner7.txt)
suggestions as always very welcome :)
-
Verruh verruh sweet. :)
There are strips of light that are bordering the bottoms of the lumpy things, that look a bit distorted. Other than that:
-
ah, yep i see what you mean. that trim for the lumpy things are window textures when they probably should be some sort of trim (lights but no windows).
ok, i'll smooth out the lump things and replace the trim round them. and fix it up in a few other places too :)
watch this space :D (but not for a few days-2 big assessments to do first :sigh: )
-
nice, but personally i think that the nose texture is still little awarped...try to uvmap this part with lithunwrap... (and maybe change the geometry too ..i feel it a bit too large...)
-

 :D
That's one beautiful ship, Admiral.:yes:
-
thanx :)
and karma, the nose mapping is not warped, but the texture on it has those two ridge things that don't quite fit the angle of the nose. I think that's what the prob is right? - they would look better if they followed the ridges along the nose?
i'll see what i can do, but i doubt it will be much. and in what way is the nose to large? all round too large? too long? too fat? too wide?
-
a bit too wide and flat in the ending. it is the only thing i don't like of your ship, both for texture and geometry
the warped areas are those on the side, where you can see those diagonal line distorted.
You probably may be able to fix it with lithunwrap (or probably with a different texture)
the point is..
what is this nose for? an opening hangar for civilian small ships? an element to let the ship dock with some space stations? maybe something else? an hydroponic garden for passengers? a giant swimming pool? :)
decide it's role and texture/model it consequentially
-
ok, i'll add that to the modify list, thanx. :)
what i think i will do is shrink it to whatever size looks best and try and modify that texture so the diagonal line will run parralell with the edge of the 2 polys it currently crosses, i think that should look better.
as for function, erm :nervous: it doesn't really have one apart from looking like a front. i tried some different shapes in the concept but they just didn't work. the only vaguely plausable function i can think of would be that it's some sort of large cargo bay or sensors or something.....
 i wouldn't have a clue how to texture it as much else-especially a swimming pool. :D
