Title: All you 3dmax pro's!!!
Post by: Red5 on December 15, 2001, 06:36:00 pm
For several months now i have been testing a experimental TC mod for Star trek armada and Armada II,using freespace ships.  I am pleased to announce that a full TC mod for it can be made.  I have succesfully made Freespace beam weaponry, updated sounds, races, and menus...  I AM AT A STANDSTILL HOWEVER   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)  because the editable models there are similar to freesspace but are much more basic, most cap ships topping at 2-400 polys.  They are created in 3ds Max and they are converted with a storm plugin to .SOD.  Because i do not have the 3ds max or heavy 3d model experience i will be unable to finish this mod.  However, recent demand for the mod again has prompted me to create the mod.  I have scaled down my initial hopes of modeling 3 races of ships with around 20-30 ships to only two races (terran and Vasudan, small shivan)  and maybe 1 fighter, 1 bomber, 1 cruiser, 1 corvette, 1 destroyer, and some installation for each.  Does anyone here at the HLP have any interest in helping with this mod at all??

A professional media producer who created the Indystar.com will be designing a A1 website for this, Ill be doing all the code work, its similar to tbl editing here on fs.  Some one please consider!

BTW I will gladly supply all criteria fr these models from a tutorial that is above me  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

That would work fine on ALL models, but i HAVE NO IDEA HOW to convert the LOD 1 from .COB to .3ds to .SOD... would anyone care to do this for me ?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

And delete some or all of the turrets....that'll save you a bunch of polys as well.

I've never seen the .sod converter.
But first get one of the .pof to cob converters from volition watch.
*waits for someone to start pimping their proggies again*
Then you can save it as a .scn I think and directly import it to 3DS max.
Then you edit it to your hearts delight.

lod1 don't have turrets, only the main lod  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
btw Red5, I think you can choose if PCS will keep the lods or not.

Im sure ONE lod1 had a turret on it or mabey that was just the name, anyway, no turrets on lod1 one, he's correct...

(modelers are too lazy at V, they cover it up with this thing about polys! Sheesh!)

I dunno about the newer versions, but MAX R2.5 only reads .3ds, .prj, .dxf (with some tweaking, but it increases poly count dramatically), .ai (adobe illistrator), .shp, .wrl, .wrz (wrl and wrz are VRML), and .stl (StereoLitho).

Actually, 3.0 handles .cob too.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Just go to 'import'.  Then select what you're after.

Big turrets are on LOD 1 of the Orion & Colossus if IRC, probably also the Hecate and maybe the Deimos.

If you want, use the main LOD, but delete all turrets, and just make the beams fire out of wherever they used to be.
The turrets alone all together on the Iceni are about 200 polys.

Well HUGE turrets look odd when not there...

I never put turrets on LOD1 sofar but I havn't made any HUGE turreted ships yet

You dont need to make a LOD fire turrets, whoever said that, it does it anyway (well it does on mine), the LOD just replaces the IMAGE not the properteys.

Super-lights? Turrets are already pretty small sometimes, y'know.

6 turrets?  For 1450 polys?  What the hell were you thinking, boy!

Low polycount = good.

Well, find me the converter and I'll do it for you.
I've got armada myself so I'll be able to test them too.

The ship im building is mainly for looks and style, I was thinking of putting it into the contest thingy, how do I do that?

the latest model is a missile launcher - 920 polys each - thats not going to work, gonna have to ditch the covers... Ill keep them if the model contest actually has space for a low poly model... (not 8 billion or whaterever you guys seem to make)

Well, I found a place for plugins and such.  It says it has the one you're after.
I'd experiment with them now, but I have work to go to.

Well, if you're going to put it in the contest, don't worry about polycount.  Just go nuts.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
