I can imagine the scene. the "Experiencing A Significant Gravitas Shortfall" is heading for docking, slaloming between lots of other ships. the navigator ( or whatever ) suddenly notices another ship on a collision course, probably the captain of the other ship fell asleep, the lazy bastard. the navigator wanna warn wim to avopid collision:

"Here's the Experiencing A Significant Grav..."

Title: Volition's naming conventions
Post by: Corentor on June 22, 2003, 11:34:33 pm
Hi, I'm new here.  I registered at Vwatch a while back and came across this site after reading Karajoma's FAQ.  Anyways.

On the topic of warship names, especially Terran names (actually Terran nomenclature from weapons to fighters to ships), Volition seems to have drawn a disproportionate number of names, especially for plot important ships, from Classical history.

All 3 new Terran warship classes in the game have names rooted from Greek Mythology.  Hecate, Deimos and Aelous are all Greek dieties.  In addition there are memorable ships like the Belisarius, the Actium, the Lysander, the Messana, and the Carthage.  Back in FS1, the Galatea is a reference to a nymph of greek legend and Orion, Fenris and Leviathan are figures in greek/classical mythology.   Even the powerful(?) Colossus is named after one of the ancient wonders, the Colossus of Rhodes.

There are exceptions like the Iceni (???I thought Vasudan ships had Egyptian nomenclature???) or several NTF ships that got blown to bits in "Kings Gambit" bot in briefing and the actual mission, but on the whole they are (80%) Classical names.

Anyways, It would be nice if future mission makers keep this in mind.  I know a lot of people like to indulge and create ship names with dark destructive and impressive names.  But keeping it 'greek' so to speak helps add an extra layer of believability and atmosphere to the missions.
Title: ships names
Post by: Galemp on June 22, 2003, 11:37:56 pm
The Iceni were a rebellious Celtic tribe in Roman Britain. Boadicea, incedentally, was a charismatic Joan-of-Arc type character who led a few Celtic rebellions against the Romans.

I remember her now.

Hmm where did I get the egyptian thing from?  I recalled an NTF ship being Egytian in origin.

Edit:  Nevermind, I got confused with  the Renenet.

Here are some ship names that appear in my campaign:

Terran-Shivan Alliance
TSD Stheno, TSD Euryale, and TSD Medusa (Demon class)
TSCv Shadow (since the TSA is an offshoot of the NTF and it is controlled by some of the former top brass in the NTF, they managed to duplicate the plans to the Iceni and build several of their own, armed with Shivan weaponry)
TSD Succubus and TSD Frigax (Ravana class)
TSJ Fear (Sathanas class)
TSC Caligula (Rakshasa class)
TSCv Chupacabra (Moloch class)

GTVA
GTDn Liberty (Hades class, defects to the TSA later in the campaign, the Dn means dreadnought, an intermediate class between destroyer and juggernaut)
GTVA Colossus II (the main "bad guy" in the campaign, a phase-shielded Colossus!)
GTJG Minos (the GTVA's version of the Knossos)
GTDn Spirit (Hades class)
GVD Pharaoh (Hatshepsut class)
GVD Memphis (Typhon class, defects to the TSA early in the campaign)
GVD Nut (Hatshepsut class)
GVCv Re (Sobek class)
GTCv Retribution (Deimos class)
GTDn Vengeance (the third and final new Hades)
GVC Menes (Mentu class)
GTC Conqueror (Leviathan class)

Sol Alliance
SAXD Orion (the first Orion destroyer)
SAD Washington (remember that Orion you saw at the end of FS1? It's back.)
SAC Blade (Fenris class)
SAXD Genesis (the first ship commissioned by the GTA, the prototype to an old class of destroyer that is only 1.6 km long with only 60000 hitpoints and a few Terran Turrets. The Fear rips it to pieces in seconds in one of the later missions.)
SAD Tacoma (another Genesis class destroyer)
SAC Rubicon (Leviathan class)
SAXD Crusader (the front half of the Lucifer wound up in Sol, giving the Sol Alliance its major technologies. The Crusader boasts more powerful versions of the LuciferBeams from FSPort (the new RFHOrange beams do 3500 damage--more than the BFRed!) and phase shielding. The Crusader is a specially refitted Orion)

I don't swing that way, but I know a certain DatDB staffer who does...and it ain't Sandwich, Darkage, Sheepy, AqueousShadow, StratComm, Styke 9, Lonestar, Ryx, CP5670 or Untouchable. ;)

(And since Raven2001 is MIA, I don't really consider him a DatDB staffer. :p )

I can't believe I forgot to include Stunaep in the list.

And I also can't believe that I don't even remember who "Teno" is.

Yes, friends, I have so many staffers I can't keep track of them all.

Here's a nickel's worth of free advice: Don't ever become a lawyer and have to take the bar exam. My life is not my own and it won't be my own for another five weeks.:doubt:

Who the heck is "Teno" anyway? Now one of my staffers is going to be upset that I didn't remember him. Damn these brainfarts... :sigh:

Uhhh...

The name "Stheno" has nothing to do with people named Stu and Teno or whatever. It's taken from Greek mythology: the three Gorgons are named Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa.

A classic example of someone entering a conversation in the middle and making an arse of himself in the process!

Hisa-Me:are female demons of death in the Japanese underworld

Hidesato:  fearless hero of Japanese legend. He killed many monsters

Koshin:The Japanese god of the roads. Travelers used to offer little straw horses for a safe journey

Nakisawame: Japanese goddess, born from the tears of Izanagi when he mourned for his dead wife.

Shaka: The Silent Sage in Japanese Buddhism, the embodiment of perfect virtue and the first appearance of the Buddha on earth in bodily form. Shrines dedicated to his worship can be found in every monastery. Shaka's great festival is called Hana-Matsuri ("Flower Festival") and is celebrated on April 8. Shaka corresponds with the Sanskrit Shakyamuni, Shaka Muni or Sakyamuni. Amoghasiddhi is his bodhisattva aspect.
