Has anyone ever had this?
I just got a new computer so I made a fresh install of Freespace 2, updated it to the latest version. Whenever I play it, I simply can't use the afterburner. I press the button for it, it makes the afterburner noise but there is no velocity increase. Its not a problem with the new keyboard and not recognising keys or anything.
Have anyone had this and know a way of fixing it? Or will I have to reinstall yet again?
Thanks,
Jack

You haven't played Half Life yet.
I got another bug in FS1, which is even better or worse(depends on how you understand)
I haven't encountered this problem yet, I just suggest you some things:
1. Attempt another reinstall
2. Make sure you do not have customized TBL, and any sort of data.
3. Rebind the key. (It's TAB as default, set it to for example CAPS LOCK, and give it a try)
Please note these are merely suggestions.

Yes, I've done all three of those and it still doesn't work. :( wtf?!

How sad, the I am afraid I have no other suggestions 4 U, sorry!

OK, so I've tried reinstalling FS2, made sure there aren't any mods installed, tried binding it to different keys, all to no effect. I also tried switching keyboards.
Heh, if anyone would be kind enough to e-mail me their FS2.exe it'd be really appreciated. The game is practically unplayable without afterburners.

The game is playable without afterburners, just a bit too difficult. :)
Want to reinstall windows? :D

Tried whacking a SCP exe in there?

Yeah. Error still occured. I guess someone sending me their .exe won't help.
Reinstall windows? I only just installed XP with the new computer I got on Tuesday........................
This is very very bad. :(

Do you use any game controllers? (Probably sounds like silly question but you'd be surprised how many people actually use keyboard and/or mouse for fs.)
If you have a game controller try unplugging it and load fs and try the afterburner to see if it works again. And if you have more then one try unplugging one controller, load fs, try out afterburner. If afterburner still don't work unplug another controller and try again, and keep doing that until the afterburner on kb finally works again or until all controllers are unplugged and then try it without any game controllers connected.
I say this because I remember having this problem once and I had two controllers connected. A joy and gamepad and I think I unplugged the gamepad and the afterburner key on the kb worked again.

when reinstalling, make sure you do an unintsall and delete the directory it was in before you reinstall...
-
Isn't it the fault of Windows XP?
Programs can do unbelivable things on not-optimized operation system. You know when FS2 was released, there weren't a single word about XP, at most at Microsoft HQ.

Would that be the one with the Subspace drive de-activating for extremely long periods of time? And every time you press Alt-J you hit 40M/s and it aborts? I hate that one...

No, that's not a bug, it is only to make the game more difficult for the human player. My bug is that my keyboard sometimes remains locked, and doesn't allow me to use any keys, including the 'all-solving' key function of CTRL-ALT-DEL :). It remains locked, and it does the function continously I last pressed. So if I pressed Fire before keyboard lock switch on, it fires continously for a minute or two. Very nerve-killing.

i don't think mine is supposed to happen... it happens in random missions... not just with a never-warp sexp...

We still haven't answered Assasin to his question. I think he gave up visiting this topic. :)
-
Heh, no I'm still here. I've done everything suggested, including replacing mouses and keyboards, to no avail. I'm going to try one last reinstall on FS2, making sure I delete everything. "One last line against the night."
Wish me luck.

The last line against the night was quickly crushed by the invading bug forces.
Arse.
Has anyone with XP ever had, and fixed, this problem?

Did you check your table files? Make sure the afterburner actually increases your speed.

Yes, no mods installed and the standard V table files are perfectly number.

Reinstall a decent Windows version.

No problems under Windows XP on several machines. This latest machine seems to have an annoying pop-click noise in FS2 and Raven Shield but nowhere else but nothing on this very strange level. No afterburners? Are you sure something else isn't not working...how fast is the machine?

Thanks for the reply IceFire.
My computer isn't slow at all... P4 2.4Ghz, 1 gig DDDR RAM, Radeon 9500, etc. etc.
I lack the lateral thinking skills to think of how this could be anything other than an XP/FS2 compatibility problem.

A bit daring question:
Virus? I have had a virus in one of my RAMs, and windows and my whole machine did weird things. Your machine doesn't appear to be an old configuration, isn't it a hardware problem?
Try installing from another CD onto your machine.
Try installing from your CD to another machine.
Aren't any other games(programs) doing weird things?
:doubt:

I just got a P4 2.6C GHz with a Radeon 9700 Pro last week, and the afterburners don't work for me now too (I had to play through FS1 without them). I'm using WinXP, but I played FS2 under WinXP on my Athlon800 previously and I had no problems, so I don't believe the OS is the problem. I don't understand why the processor type or video card should affect whether afterburners function, though.
-
Woohoo! Solved the problem in only a few minutes. It seems it is WinXP after all, but I don't understand why it's only affecting my P4 and not my Athlon.
OK, here's what I did.
1) Go to your FreeSpace 2 directory.
2) Right-click on FS2.exe and select Properties.
3) Select the Compatibility tab.
4) Check off the Compatibility Mode option and select Windows 98/Windows Me. If it's available, check off the "Turn off advanced text services" option as well.
5) Click OK.
6) Double-click on FS2.exe to play the game. Afterburners should now work properly.
EDIT: One other thing. Make sure you start the game by running FS2.exe and not the FS2 Launcher program (Freespace2.exe) because if you run the launcher it won't use the compatibility settings.
-
LOL Just remembered that's what I did!
Flipside :D

It's a recent XP fault. First time I heard of it was only a few months ago and since then I've heard of four cases or so. Something in an update most likely is causing the problem.

time to add that to your FAQ

Well darn. I just got a new computer too and the afterburners seem quite kaputzed for me as well.
After doing a fresh install of the SOTY edition (so it's stuck at version 1.20,) I hit the afterburners only to... well, not afterburn. There was the deadening clicking sound of exhausted afterburners as if I had just used all my afterburn reserves, yet my afterburner reserve was completely full. The ship didn't jump above max speed either. Oddly enough, when I'm below maximum speed, I can use the afterburning key to accelerate at a normal rate, but my reserves will not be used and I don't get the ever-pleasant jolt of an afterburn. I've also tried remapping keys and porting other pilots from the old machine and the condition remained unchanged.
It's rather depressing as this computer is only 26 hours old, hand built so no anti-FS2 technician had a chance to club the ol' game. As for the specs:
P4 2.8C
Asus P4P800 Deluxe
512MB PC3200 RAM
120GB HD
Radeon 9800 Non-Pro (but liberally overclocked; latest Catalyst drivers... 6.xx'ish)
XP Professional (SP1)
My computer that could run it was:
Celeron 433
384 PC100
10GB HD
Geforce 2 GTS
XP Professional (SP1)
And the compatability mode suggestion solved it. =) Thanks guys.

Does anyone else still have problems with energy allocations? I cannot manage shield/weapons/engine power.

I've heard of Win95 compatability mode fixing that one. Which mode are you using?
-
I had that problem too, but I fixed it by pressing Num Lock.
