Title: GTE Nilus
Post by: LtNarol on June 20, 2003, 09:15:52 pm
[glow=blue]GTE Nilus

The GTE Nilus is something of a departure from the traditional Terran navy, built like a larger bomber, it resembles - in form and firepower - a smaller more compact Fenris.  Bolstering 2 forward firing 1.2 meter projectile cannons and a ventral E-mortar turret, the Nilus is capable of inflicting mild damage against most cruiser and corvette class vessels.  A forward deck-mounted 600mm projectile turret provides light anti-capital deterrent in escort situations while a pair of anti-fighter defense turrets guard against fighter and bomber attacks.  Designed primarily for escort and support roles, the Nilus cannot compete in firepower in full scale engagements despite the advances in technology.

Nah. Most of the really good stuff is kept tightly locked up. No web pages, nor notes anywhere. ;)

I love guns in space. Won't that need that dreaded gunship AI?

I don't believe in altering engine code for every little thing, especially when there are plenty of ways around it if you just use a bit of imagination.  Thus, the answer is no; we of the 158th team will not be switching to the SCP for quite some time (if ever) and as such all our mods are designed to operate without SCP modifications (obviously).  We have our ways.  ;)

Sweeeet.

One thing - how's it gonna look for the player flying it? AFAIK, the player's ship can't be seen from the cockpit, so you'll have that turret firing, but it will be invisible to the player, so you'll have the shots coming from nowhere.

Unless I've got it all wrong, and it's a capship....:nervous:

its an escort - a gunship. So no, it's AI controlled, not player.

Give this man a cookie :D  Indeed, this ship will not be player-flyable, the reason being that it would resemble flying a cruiser and most players will feel like they're flying with an elephant on their back.  Its for your own sanity, trust me ;)

If it had been mine, the nose would be rounder, and it would have big engines on the tail end. The forward beam cannons would also probably be Yamato style.

I like, however, Narol's work on this one. :D

looks good, but why does every new bomber now have the firepower of a cruiser?

2 answers:

A. Its a gunship at 57 meters in length, not a bomber :D
B. It doesn't have the firepower of a cruiser, just similar to one.

Realistically, this ship would only be good against Fenris and Leviathan class cruisers when there's a pack of them - largely due to the thing's lack of beam weaponry.

Very nices design, but those stretched textures on the hull seem to confuse in terms of scale...

not sure if anyone pointed this out already but the friggin turret has to point straight up in the air though which would make it look stupid. I do love the model though.

Such is the problem with all turrets, yes, we know.  The team is working on a solution however :D

Yeah but I thought SCP modifications required all sorts of work on the ai and such as well as a new pof inorder to hold new information about the turret angles and stuff?

All of our solutions are...regular-FS2-based :D

I think the ship looks pretty cool, but to give some criticism I believe it would look better if the dorsal turret was altered a bit. Make the barrel shorter, and perhaps even change the shape of the turret. A round turret with a short barrel like the Babylon 5 Hyperion's Medium Pulse Cannons might be an idea. Or maybe just make the turret such that there's little clearance between the turret and the deck, so it's more like the Orion's turrets (but with a better looking shape). Also I'm not too keen on the two red lights on her either. I'd keep the turrets free of windows, and lights or whatever else because it's not Ten Forward, it's a big gun. So people shouldn't need to look outside anyway and lights just lets the enemy know where to shoot.

Other than, I think it looks pretty good (depending upon what scale it is to other ships). It's a damn sight better than I could do anyway.

I'm not sure if the E-Mortar is a new weapon, but the Leviathan and Fenris mount "Fusion Mortars" just FYI.

As an addendum, it might also be suitable to call the ship the GTF Nilus, where F means Frigate. Rather than E for Escort. The Leviathan was designed to be an escort for example, but its still a Cruiser. It could also give some continuity with other mods such as Warzone where they have the GTE Nidar for Exploration; but at the same time it might conflict with the NTF Iceni which is supposed to be a "Command Frigate" (even though F stands for "Front" in its name). Just a suggestion in any case. Volition might have called it a Battleship for all we know to follow their rather backward naming conventions (but naming conventions change with time so that's something I'm not worried about. In the age of Sail the Frigate was the strongest ship class in the navy, now its little more than an escort).
