Title: My first (showable) capship: GTD Saturn
Post by: Sigma on June 22, 2003, 09:22:00 am
I've made this destroyer for my upcoming campaign Battlegroup Omega. The GTD Saturn is the replacement for the old Hecate class destroyer.

I'm still learning how to model and the Saturn is my first showable ship. At the moment it has only one LOD and 24 turrets.

What do you think?

For a first ship it's pretty good actually (although it does look like what happens if you try to the Herc/Perseus into a capship).

It needs retexturing pretty badly though and the neck could do with being a little less boxy (at the moment it looks like the neck is a square. Try making it so that the sides aren't at 90 degree angles to each other.

I'd also be tempted to bulge out the sides projections a little so that they were more rounded.

All in all though for a first attempt that isn't bad :)

Very Hecate-like, but it is at least showable. :)

Looks like an Erynies to me. Looking good. Might want to change the textures a bit and add a few more details, but overall its good work..

Nice design, does look hecatish, but not really a follow-up as much of a bare bones or initial concept. Kind of like how Inferno's Phobos looks like it comes before the Deimos rather than after.

IMO, ships tend to get sleeker, better designed, and more good looking, rather than boxier and less streamlined. It's still a good model though, just might need a little reworking as to where it fits in.

And yes, needs a new skin.

Interesting, could be used to confuse the enemy. They think its a close up fighter.... but really its a far away cap ship!

Beams ahoy

Thanks for the constructive criticism, guys! :)
I'm going to make some changes at the design of the ship.
And I change the textures, too.

'NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

SOMEONE ELSE HAS MADE A GTD SATURN!!!!!!!!!!!:hopping::mad2::hopping::mad:

About the ship, well, it needs detail, lots.  It's very slab sided and boxy.
(sorry, but I get quite opinonated about things)

'should have posted scans of my techical draws of my GTD Saturn, mutter, mutter.........'

That's not GTD, that's GTGs, gunship. Search for 'My first two ships' named thread in FreeSpace Modding. But as I know, THIS is the thread of the GTD Saturn, not of my gunship.

Ja, it looks like a giant Erynies/Deimos.
Title: A brick with engines... (joking)
Post by: Star Dragon on June 25, 2003, 03:20:40 pm
But a very NICE brick!

Don't feel bad I think it;s neat, kinda like a more battleship like counterpart to the Hecate (less support ships and more battleship like).

Now if you want to see a brick class vessel it would be The Valen from Legend of The Rangers! Obviously a Human inspired design...

Aren't the four Multi-part turrets too close to each other? Aren't they too effective against fighters?

The multi-part turrets are working without problems.
But you are right. The turrets are too big.

Size doesn't count, I don't know who has made the GTI Acheron, but somehow he has exegenerated the size of a turret. The capacity of the turret(if it were a container) would be four Ursas.

Who told your turrets are not functioning? I just wanted to ask if those turrets are for example flaks, it would be extremely dangerous to turn on it. Of course I have no knowledge what type of weapons those are.
