So if you had built this virtual cockpit (http://members.chello.nl/~s.ferris/) to enjoy your flight sims, why in the name of all that is sacred (like Legos, bratwurst and double cream brie) would you use a skank crappy GAME STICK?
Ah well, maybe he couldn't afford the HOTAS/Cougar after he paid for all of that...
-
wooa...
and to reply, it's because it's a glider sim, don't need an hotas system, wouldn't be realistic anyway.
-
[color=66ff00]That's utterly insane. The only thing more mental I've seen in that 'field' is a guy who built his own force feedback flight yoke to go with his 6 screen cockpit, it was quite impressive.

that's pretty tight :D

what's insane is to use that for a crappy glider sim... dunno, this thing would rule with the latest flight simulator, or flanker 2.0!

The article I read about that setup stated that he was playing MS-FlightSim200x, not merely a glider specific sim. Thus, I'm baffled. Next to the cost of that rig, some real gear would have been cheap.

Perhaps he's scared of heights

"Real Gear" referring to a stick, not the supposed glider.
-
9 PCs and 13 monitors? :wtf: even assuming he got them relatively cheap on some sort of bulk buying scheme, that's at least 5 or 6 thousand bucks there, probably more. Now, I dunno what flying lessons cost, but...
-
well, I don't know that stick, but it sure doesn't look like crap...

Its Logitech game stick, modded to extend the shaft. Specifically, I think its a Logitech Force 3d (http://www.logitech.com/lang/images/0/107.gif)

Expensive or no, I wouldn't mind trying FS2 on that puppy :D

This guy must own a shop or smg., beside for that much you could buy a decent VR-Helmet.
Though it can give some people headaches - it gave me :doubt:.
-
Chap called MigMan has a flight sim website, and he once had an article featuring a dude who built a complete cockpit setup from second-hand helo parts. Seems like it'd be less work to become an airline pilot...
-
Bad. ****ing. Ass.
I want one :D
BTW, except for that stick being a Logitech (you can have my Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!!:D), with all of it's bad quality control, the stick itself isn't half bad.
But to waste all that on a crappy GLIDER sim?! Give me a break, IL-2 Sturmovik, baby!
-
Its a Logitech Wingman Extreme...
I have the same one....
Its half decent... I just couldnt argue with the price (absolutely nothing)...

Oh! Then you'd understand how hard it is to write with a single hand, for I'm "suffering" from the same problem.
BTW: Yes Saitek sticks are amaizingly good in terms of ergonomy.
-
What do you mean?
BTW, I think ALL Logitech stick's rudder breaks within 2 months, and then the throttle starts to go after 3. Happened to me.
-
Neither happened to me with my Cyborg, while I've been using it for almost two years.
-
My Wingman Extreme lasted me a good 2.5-3 years before the r(X) axis started to go and I had to replace it with my Freedom 2.4 joystick.
Mmm.... Cordless.....

Or a Force 3D since the stick is exactly the same on both joysticks.

No kidding, I think I could do with some of that :D
-
I've had the same joystick (Wingman extreme) for 8+ years.

Meh.:doubt: Unimpressive. He should have used fewer monitors, around 9 (three front, two side, three back, LCD top). demolish about 3 keyboards and re arranged them around the cockpit as buttons to press. Built the cockpit frame out of wood so it surrounds you and you're in the dark except for the light from the screens and a some halogen light cables for under the button panels. NOW THAT would be the ultimate FS2 cockpit as well for any other flight sim out there.
*drools...*
-
Discard the monitors, build a decent virtual cockpit inside Freespace itself - and use a VR-Helmet.
Arrange keyboards, so they overlap the actuall VR-cocpit.
The two could actually be synchronised based on the helmets position using some laser-distance measure gismo....
....and I just got started - how about a decent seat with built in sticks and high-powered hydraulic suspension....
ect. Erm....for all that....
I think we should contact the army.
-
whooee, that looks nice indeed
I've seen something like this some time ago too but it was from a different person and with different controls.

As my mother would say:
"There's one thing that's always in shortage.
Money, honey."
