Title: GVF Shrike
Post by: TrashMan on June 24, 2003, 12:27:22 pm
This is a very early version of the Vasudan fighter. Textures are only basic, as this version's purpose is to test it for geometry errors and balancing the TBL.
Have fun:

Like I said, this is a very very early version - it's just for testing - and finding bugs like that...
Belive me, it will look much better when it's done...
This is more-or less just for show...

*post away....
**lod 3? you won't get close enough to see that..but I will correct that..

Nice design...biggest problem is that it lacks depth.  There is no height to this ship.  Now I understand that you are probably going for a very slim profile from the side but this is probably over doing it.  Give the wings a slight curve downwards I think and the cockpit could have some depth to it by raising it off the hull.

I love the intakes however.  Those are really cool!

Here's an old pic - note that the cockpit is now smaller and flatter.

i was thinking of maby transforming the intakes into missile launchers - it's supposed to be a heavy fighter...

Nice work there. Very Vasudan looking, whcih is kinda hard to do. The one thing that I dont really like is that the ship is all one texture. Try putting a large "thing" across the entire back of the ship with a different texture, just to vary it up. I dont exactly know how to explain the "thing", basically just imagine if the back section got really fat (running parrallel to the contour of the back edge.)

nice design, but are the intakes working in game w/o zbuffer?

He did say that the textures were basic! :) How come no matter which model or how many times a modder say that the textures are just prelims someone comes along and tells them to change them! :D

Anyway getting to the ship I actually like the older version better but both are very good  :)

The older one is a lot better, still a far cry though. Follow ICe's advice.

I notice that most of your models, well at least some of them, stand out as being really 2 dimensional. Yeah, its not completly flat, but It could still use some 'feel' imo by making giving it more hight. Look at the Horus and Serapis. They are relatively flat, but still have height where it counts and where its visible.

And I know the texture job is just an example, but I think its another thing that makes it look really flat.

That's not Vasudan... :p Heck, it's not even Terran. Make some of those ends into spikes and it's Shivan.

Say, why don't you bend the whole thing down at the edges?

Hmm... you liked the first version better?....
But the cockpit is just too damn large..I'll see what I can come up with....

I know what you're thinking -  that I'm trying to win Shrikes favor. That is beneath contempt!

I just liked the name Shrike - it felt like it fits. If you have a problem with that go suck a doorknob.

The model itself looks pretty good... I'd say that if you give it a great war feel, rather than the new vasudan designs, it'd look authentic, texture wise that is.

Not to steal the thread but the Styx already exists :)

It will make an appearance in MindGames and my own campaign, The Mercury Affair.

That said it wasn't named after the Styxx. I had a couple of other ships named after rivers in the underworld and it seemed natural to keep up the progression :D

and I'd be willing to bet that there is a GTxx Thunder out there somewhere (if not a ship class at the least a ship with that name) :D

EDIT : Ought to mention that the render was by Ashrak rather than me :)

 I took the link from the version of my website on my harddrive rather than the version online.
I set myself up a HTML page on my hard drive that allows me to easily check both the online and offline pages on my site. Must have clicked on the wrong one! DOH!

I'll have to correct that

EDIT: Should work now :)

Yeah, too bad the name isn't egyptian at all IIRC...
