[q]From Apple's Powermac site (http://www.apple.com/powermac/)

When compared head-to-head against the same PCs, in a large series of Photoshop tests the dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 is 2.2 times faster than the 3GHz Pentium 4-based system and almost twice as fast as the dual 3.06GHz Xeon-based system.[/q]
Pretty powerful stuff, apparently. Anyone here a Mac user?
-
don't own a mac, would be nice considering the amount of photoshop work i do...
what sort of display does it come with?
EDIT: 23 Inch cinema display.... WANT!!!!
-
There's one thing, and one thing only that's preventing a Mac from sitting on my desk right now: The fact that they're still too damn expensive.
-
true.. and it's good to see that logitech are now offering mac osX support for thier mice too, and if i had the money... i'd seriously get one:nod: (with the 23" display of course;) )

well yeah, it better be twice as powerful, since it's 4 times more expensive
Cray should sell their computers the same way :doubt:
"our octoprocessors are 12 times faster than any of the personal computer available today".
How plain is that?
-
indeed

60 frames per second in Solitaire.
-
How much does that monstrosity cost?
edit: Oh. 3000 for the best one? Thats not much at all. Arent top of the line Pentium around there, and they're twice as slow.
-
They start at USD$1999
-
The case looks butt ugly though.
-
plus they're... mac :doubt:

Surely since OSX is based on UNIX you have a good chance of porting freespace linux to it? Or have i got my OS'es mixed up?

:blah: Its a Mac. I'd rather get a 2.5ghz for £500 quid, for a multitude of obvious reasons. One being Macs suck.
-
Hell, P4s don't allow multiple CPUs. ANY alternative to not being able to upgrade some ****box comp in two years when you need that much processor to play ****in' Minesweeper is starting to sound good. AND everything ships with XP nowadays, which is basically Mac OS X with a vendetta against your memory chip and enough bugs to simulate a termite infestation on your hard disk.
And that's saying something, because I always have and still do consider buying a Mac, or in particular anything with Mac OS, tantamount to putting on stilletto heels, leather straps, and a feather boa and strutting around lisping about how you need a screensaver or your monitor will explode. They're the ****in' wood blocks of computers, and leapord-print ones at that. I prefer a chainsaw.

Well, duh. They always have, what's the shock that they've continued a time-honored tradition?
I've never seen an Apple that was faster than a decently-built PC. I've never seen one that was even pretty close- they've all been noticeably slower than their contemporaries on the PC market. Whatever the hell the draw to Macs is (simplicity and a marginally better OS than the latest equivalent of a Windows bukkake scene), speed is NOT it. And yet they're always "NINE TIMES FASTER!!1!!1!1"
-
Sure guys, buy a Mac, and enjoy playing Tetris 3.0 :D
I mean, seriously, the Macs are **** when it comes to games, both in frame rates, and selection. (Ooh-ah, Americas Army (which kicks major ass on the PC) and Unreal Tournament top the list, watch me wet my pants, screw Doom 3 on the PC!)
-
Well, depends what you're looking for, I guess. I've got this violent love/hate relationship with Escape Velocity ("It's so boring! It's so cool! Trading sucks! Pirating rules!"), so I'm not really the most objective person on the subject, but it seems a lot of Mac games are less glitzy but better designed. It's got that kinda small-community thing going on where users release all sorts of cool ****- which you really don't see with Windows software too much.
-
On benifit of buying a mac though is that if you buy a top of the range Mac now you'll still have a reasonably powerful computer in 2 years time.
There's less of that running to stay still **** with the mac.
-
If you buy any top-of-the-line machine you'll have a decent box in two years. Hell, right now I'm posting from a PC that is, last I checked, three years old. It can still run with the best of 'em, though the vid card's showing its age.
-
Mac CPUs (I think Motorola is responsible..not sure) are much better designed than Intel (in particular ) chips, though. Intel are prone to chucking in totally useless stuff to try and get a higher clockspeed, like making a 20 stage piepline that has no benefit other than to push the clock cycles (but not performance) up. Or hyperthreading, which requires specifically written application.
Not to mention the overhead of having to preserve the old opcodes for backwards compatibility - i.e. complex instructions designed into the chip when machine / assembly coding was de riguer. Or having to try and cram in 32 bits without losing 16-bit compatibility.
On the other hand, when Apple created their 32 bit chip, they just redesigned from scratch - more efficient that way. I'd imagine ditto for this one.
It's worth noting that M/G hertz ratings are completely and utterly meaningless measures nowadays.... especially on Intel chips.
-
like i said, with the kind of graphical stuff i'm gonna be doing in the next 3-4 years or so, this would be beneficial...;)

This is one of the reasons why i hate Apple(the other being they make Macs, which imo suck, might work for some people, but they're useless to me ).
-
What's so good about Macs when it comes to image processing? I mean, they suck as a computor, and I don't notice any better image quality.
-
Nothing, really. Some graphics programs come out on Mac first, lots of artists don't like to bother with computer-literacy, and hype. Mostly hype.
-
Hmmm perhaps... i just want the 23" cinema display... damn things at least a good $1000 cheaper than the samsung models;)
-
Mac monitors are only compatable with Macs, Turnsky ;)

note that is INFACT a PC that monitor's hooked up to;)
notice the "green Jellybean" start menu? (winXP)
-
You liiiiieeee!!!! :D
Bet you need an adapter, tho.
-
yeah, you do... but..
Clicky (http://www.meritline.com/dviatdvitoad.html)
-
$150 for an adaptor?
Holy fucking fuck.
-
expensive isn't it?;)

Why in hell has nobody cloned that game for the PC? OK so it does become a little tedious from time to time but it's brilliant played in 1 hour stints from time to time.
The system requirements are great too, you could almost install it on a pocket calculator.

-
I think that's more than my monitor cost, period.
By the way, is there any pricing on going the other route? I've got a ****ty old PC monitor and a ****ty old Mac, and I think they'd make a lovely couple seeing as I didn't have to pay for either. Trick is, my total maximum budget for this project is maybe $15 or it's just plain not worth it...:D
-
Maeg: I think because it's not really famous, and probably because Ambrosia doesn't wanna lose hold of it. Not that they've got too tight a grip, anyway.
-
Here's the Samsung alternative;)

-
No offense to Jobs or anything, but due to the extremely cheap Athlon XPs, I've become an AMD fanboy. I'll just wait for San Diego and Victoria :)
-
same here, my main PC has an athlonxp in it

I like your posters more than the computer. Namely the one in the upper-left of the image. ^^;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
-
this ain't mine....
i wish it was tho...
I was just making the point that you can infact hook a apple monitor to a pc..
-
Yeah, his pinup is a French poodle instead.:p
-
What's the guy's background? I can't quite make it out....
-
Anime ****. Chick sitting on a moon.

actually mine is the "Eye of Terror" Poster From warhammer 40K;)
which looks a bit like this:
-
Does "The Toxic Crusader" and shelves full of broken components beat that, or not? I don't follow these things...
-
i don't play 40k either.. it just looked cool and filled up a patch of bare wall for me;)
-
That guy sure looks like he's getting into that stressball, anyways...:D
What IS Warhammer, by the way? I keep hearing about it, figured out it was some sort of mech-based thing, but that's as far as I got...
-
just look through "white drawf" magazine, that'll pretty much tell you what you need to..
or the website http://www.games-workshop.com
besides, i personally don't want to get into that sort of thing for the amount of time and money involved... (tis expensive after a while)
there's probably a warhammer player on the boards who could tell you a bit more

left poster, Rei Ayanami from Eva. right one, dunno.
Turnsky, gonna do some games for this summer's campaign? :)

you wanna give up on modelling then.

unfortunately, there's not much of a warhammer 40K fanbase in tasmania os i never really got into it all that much. i'm still interested however, but cash has ALWAYS been an issue:doubt:
i used to play magic: the gathering a fair bit in high school, but not anymore...
-
What kinda crack are you on today, Venom? Someone spiked it with window-cleaner again, obviously. If you cared to complete that sentence, you would find that I'd no sooner pay for a Mac than I would saw off my own toes and eat them for lunch. And with good reason, and one that has nothing to do with modelling- I could get everything I need on either platform. But I suppose that's too much sentence for you, eh boy?

I used to hink that too ( hell, who, who's in the hobby, never thought "greedy GW bastards, 10 bucks for a damn command squad!!!"? ). But after a while when you have your large army, you realize you've spent, in what, two, theree years? about about 250 bucks. looks like a lot, then you look at how much you put in upgrading your PC, buying a new lightset and others for the ****ing car, your brand new Xbox with a second pad and 3 games, and, w00t! warhammer is cheap, all of a sudden.
Stryke: ah, sorry, didn't fully understand your sentence actually, so I kindda guessed it out. my bad.
-
I forgive you, my child.
[does that little two-fingers thing]
And hell, what hobby DOESN'T cost money? I suppose you could take up rock collecting...
Actually, come to think of it, that's more expensive than most.

 you're talking to someone who owns an xbox, 12 games and bought all the parts for his pc, and has paid full retail for about 150 odd games and is saving up for a $830 wacom graphics tablet
:p
i got a extra pad and 2 games for free as part of a customer loyalty thing;)
besides, i just don't have the space for painting the bloody things..
-
While I don't do it myself, I have to admit I admire the time and concentration my friends pour into Warhammer and stuff. They just sit there for hours painting. The words 'gigantic waste of time' come to mind sometimes, but... well, it's a Chinese thing, which highly values focussing and pouring effort into a single thing for extended lengths of time - it's a discipline, a great skill. Warhammer fits into that, in a funny sort of way. :D
-
well, i suppose each painted minuture is a work of art (sorta) i suppose those who paint them feel a sense of accomplishment and pride whenever they finish them.. sorta like myself and my photoshop work.. or a few people and their models/renders
as well as other assorted things...
-
well yeah, believe me, when you've painted a wyvern wih all the highlights and shadings, your bring it to your local GW store and they all go "whoah! you should bring it for the Golden Demon!", you sure feel proud :p
besides, yeah, it requires a lot of skills, it's painting, to me it's art.
